There are many factors that can contribute to a
student not graduating with good grade. Many of
these factors may be beyond the control of the
student.

However, from observation many students fail to
graduate with good grades for reasons which can
be traced directly to them. They knowingly or
unknowingly plotted their own failure.
Here are 5 common ways many students
jeopardize their chances of graduating with good
grades;

Poor Start: It is said that the beginning of a thing
matters. This is true if you aim to graduate with
good grades. It has been observed that students
who end up graduating with good grades are the
ones that started putting the needed effort right
from their first year.
Many think that they have plenty of time, so they
use their first year to have “fun” only to realize how
difficult it is to make up for what has been lost
already.

Lack of Interest:For one reason or the other many
students find themselves admitted to study a
particular course they have no interest to study.
Many of such students usually develop apathy for
academic activities.
Some others take their academics with levity hoping
they will change into a more preferable course one
later (which may never happen). Only to wish they
have been more serious later. Even if the course
wasn’t what you opted for, take time to find out
what the course is all about and its prospects. You
never can tell, you may end up loving it more than
your preferred course.
There are some others who have no interest
whatsoever in academics. They are in school
against their own will. A student once told me,
“I’m here just because my parents want me to be
here.” You can hardly put a good amount of effort
needed to succeed in something you are not
interested in.

Misplaced Priorities/Poor Time Management: One
major cause of failure is broken or diverted focus.
You are in school to study and learn. That means
you shouldn’t focus on something else at the
expense of the main reason you are in school. I
am not saying you shouldn’t take out time to
socialize, have fun, etc. but don’t indulge in these
things at the expense of your study. In higher
institutions there are many things that will likely
get you distracted. Hence, the need for you to get
your priorities right, set relevant goals and
eliminate as much distraction as possible in order
to remain focused on your main objective.

Negative Influence: In campus, you are going to
meet the good, the bad and the ugly. Therefore
who you choose or allow to choose you as a
friend will likely influence you either positively or
negatively. Beware of “friends” who will
discourage you from attending lectures and
studying.

Poor Study Habits:Since the main objective you
are in school is to study and learn, your success
will depend on your study habits/pattern. Studying
hard is not enough, you also need to study smart.
An effective study habit considers what to study,
when to study and how to study.

You want to get good grades in Nigerian university?

Toughen up to match the stress.

Don't let anyone or anything deter you; some senior students may tell you how you cannot get more than C in that lecturer's course - they just gave you a clue to getting A. Now you know you have to work harder n smarter than them all.

Know your lecturers preference, some may want you to photocopy what they gave you to them, some want new ideas from you, some like you to write bulkily while others emphasize straight to the point. Just understand them n use their keys to open their doors. If you cannot learn to understand your lecturers, you may not..

Start studying early n employ the methods most suitable to you in studying. Never get fed up with reading, the moment you want to, know that it is the point you need it most.

Test yourself, take a book, begin to write on different topics n see your ability to recall. You have the opportunity to correct your mistakes before actual exam.

God is a he ultimate, seek his grace in your studies, it works, from experience

Above all, who is intelligent is intelligent. Who is dull is dull. Its an embittering caste system. Some people are born to succeed academically, others are born to do some other things. There's nothing we can do about that.
Secondly, some people go to school to study courses that they have little or no passion about and they end up flopping not just even in school but in the real society when they graduate.
Some people do not know how to pass their time. They are procrastinators and would rather read a night to the examination. This is a fast recipe for failure. No one reads a night to the exam and expects to make a first class.!
Some people are just not serious and prayerful about their life. They think life is a bed of roses. Most ladies and younger boys are guilty of this. I mean, who goes to school just to do fashion? or drive the lastest cars? or make the most expensive hairs at the expense of what took them there in the first place? These things are secondary and come at the right time.
Finally, all we need is God's FAVOUR to succeed in anything we do.! We must pray for that ALWAYS.[/b]

Ok---I agree with some of them. However, if there was comfort at home (instead of genset noise and darkness caused by the government in the last 16 years), study would be easy and one need not read in the four walls of the school to earn good grades.

I have seen a very intelligent student graduated with a bad grade. Not because he didn't meet all the above stated but because he refused to pay for "blocking"

Our tertiary institutions are no more based on merit.
Lecturers now force you to buy a photocopied 10 pages material he downloaded from the internet for 2k. If you don't buy it, even if you write ur best, you will end up getting an E grade.

Some even go as far as telling students to pay for the lectures. I remembered a lecturer said we should pay 9k for his lectures. If you don't pay, don't enter his class.

If not for God, I would have missed a second class upper.

back then in UNIBEN lecture theatres, when students are reading at night; as one preacher is preaching about 5 others would be waiting outside to take their turn.
