is this a joke or what? Do you know how many movies come out in the Yoruba language each month, or how many Afro-pop music by Nigerian acts is released in Yoruba language per month, or how many kids are born each year, who speak Yoruba as their sole home language?
brother, pls... don't say that again. Yoruba will be one of the last African languages standing, no matter how dire things become.

Yoruba people affinity for their language is next to none in the whole of africa.
Everywhere the Yoruba goes they alway take their language with them and blend in with the surrounding culture, never made unnecessary noise that may threat their hosts.

I am praying and sincere hoping that a day will come, when science, mathematics, engineering and so on will taught in our local languages. On that day, is when Nigeria will real be a great nation...

You know, Ironically, it is the lax attitude of other southern Nigerian towards their indigenous languages that is affecting the Yorubas and causing any negative trends being observed. (Via Contact) ... They come to the south-west speaking nothing but Pidgin and expect the same from Yorubas...... They complain that the nigerian music industry is too Yoruba language focused (less yoruba and more pidgin they say).... they want to turn us to Liberia and Sierra Leone who have creoles as Lingua franca at the expense of indigenous languages. The creoles sound horrible-- go and listen to a Liberian speak English, you will cringe. That isn't what will become of Nigerians... Olorun maje.
Why not just stick to making our major indigenous languages the standard, alongside English. That way, both can be learned in the appropriate ways.

Well said! But making one of local language official along side English would be very hard, because the way the country is presently constituted would not allow it ( hint: tribalitic bigotry and cultural supremacy among the constituting units)

Nigeria is a FEDERATION of states.
Each state/region has the constitutional right to choose It's official language. Yoruba is Official in Osun- actually it is the state making the most effort towards the development of the Yoruba language at the moment.
It is not as hard as you think - 8 Nigerian states have the right to make yoruba language of instruction. Alongside English (if they so please)

Agree with you, but the 8 or so Yoruba states decide to adopt Yoruba like you outline here, other section of the country may accuse the Yoruba of trying to secede or ulterior motives....(will or tribes such as Igbo, Idoma, Ijaw, Fulani etc living within Yoruba region not protest and claim constitutional breach on their right as Nigeria to reside anywhere within the federation without language discrimination?.

No, that is what it means to be a Federal state, Nigeria was truly federal before, when there were regional parliaments. but now, we still have state house of assemblies which can make state-wide policies. If Yoruba is made official in the SW, other Nigerians living within the region will have to learn it.. New York has its own laws that are different from what you will obtain in California, and the laws of Alberta Canada are not the same you will get in Ontario or Quebec.

but you and me know quite well that what we have now more less Unitary system, the federal republic in Nigeria official name is just for academic exercise... The agitation for Resources Control is pointer to this assertion that we are not practicing a federation system of government...

The 8 Yoruba states can not just decided to adopt Yoruba language with opposition from other sections of the country.

The moment Yoruba language become official medium of communication in S.west region and go unchallenge by the other regions, Nigeria as we know it officially cease to exist....

The governor (Aregbesola) is already doing that I believe
he is trying to market Osun state to the world, as the stopover point for anybody who would like to learn about Yoruba people and culture. Only recently has there been some levels of improvements in accommodation and hosting facilities, but places like Osogbo are getting the modern facilities they need to host foreign visitors. The funny thing is that despite the low standard of accommodation facilities that existed before, it didn't deter foreign visitors that keep increasing every time from coming...... I think Carribbean, Central and South American visitors and even North American Blacks, are not as picky/choosy as Europeas and other whites. They can understand the plight of African countries, and they just blend in. They can put up with sub-standard services and are more than happy to connect with Africans, not minding service quality. This is a good thing i believe.
