No, it is not. Every true believer in Christ has the Holy Spirit. Read here Romans 8:9; 1 Corinthians 12:13; Ephesians 1:13-14, but not every believer speaks in tongues 1 Corinthians 12:29-31. Even Christ Himself did not speak in tongue 1 Like |

1Co 12:1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant. 1Co 12:2 Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led. 1Co 12:3 Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. 1Co 12:4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 1Co 12:5 And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. 1Co 12:6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. 1Co 12:7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. 1Co 12:8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; 1Co 12:9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; 1Co 12:10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: 1 Like |

Tallesty1: You're right. The token of salvation is the Holy Spirit. He is the confirmation that a person has been accepted into God's family. But he does not gift everyone with tongues. I think though that if you ask for it you can have it. Judging by what Paul says though, that he would that the Corinthians had the gift of prophecy more than the gift of tongues, I think that we can ask for any gift we want. The important thing is to know what they are meant for. But you may be wrong that Jesus didn't speak in tongues. There's at least one place he seemed to have. At the Cross, when he cried out, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani, he wasn't understood. Those that stood there thought that he was calling for Elijah. I think that if it was Greek, Latin or Aramaic that he spoke there it would have been immediately obvious what he said. As for how the writers of the Gospel knew the meaning then, "speaking in tongues" isn't supposed to mean "spouting gibberish". It means speaking in different languages and sometimes completely new previously unknown languages. And there is a counterpart to that gift: the gift of interpretation. Languages mean nothing if meaning cannot be conveyed from one mind to another. So what Jesus said was useful to the rest of us someone had to be able to understand and interpret it to the rest of us. I think the writers had that gift. |

Mat 27:46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? "eli" and "yama" are both of hebrew origin "sabachthani" is of Chaldee origin Jesus did not cry out in tongues there perhaps those there were not familiar with Chaldee words. |

I think what u shd find out is, the spiritual significance of Tongues. If it is not relevant Apst Paul won't admonish christians to desire spiritual gifts, which Tongues is one. Why do u need to pray in tongues? Every true believer who understands who he/she is shd know that he/she is a spirit, and God is a spirit. When u need a heart to heart communication with ur father, u speak ur native language. Speaking in tongues means speaking God's native language, to God. You are not speaking to man, but to God. To man its senseless, but in spirit u r speaking Mysteries. That's why it shdnt be faked. If you r indeed baptised by the Holy Spirit and with fire. You will be given a perculiar Tongue, my toungues are not ur tongues. If u speak my tongues, that means u r faking it, that means lying. I gave my life to christ, but for yrs I was not baptised by the holy ghost, because I had a Catholic background. I resisted, but wen I earnestly desired it, it came. I spoke in a language that sounded like Arabic language, for 2hrs I couldn't stop myself. Till today that is my tongues. Wen I want to talk to my father, that's the language I use. Satan does not understand it so he can't interfer. But if u want to go through ur christian life not fully harnessing what is freely given to u, fine. But the holy spirit is a person. We communicate. I enjoy him most when I get lost in a situation and then I will ask him to direct me on what to do. Oh my God, its so cool to always see how the answers just come. Praise God. But its folishness to those who don't believe. |

It's not a MUST, but all christians filled wit the holy spirit SHOULD..... Because the bible says wen we speak in tongues we speak miseries unto God For we knw not what to pray for, except we are being guided by the spirit. What that means Is tongues is a more "secure" and "encoded" means of communication between man and God our creator.... so to speak Let me give an example, for instance you are praying for your health and a friend of yours somewhere is about having an accident, wen u switch to tongues, d spirit guides u into praying for that friend.... that is the easiers way I can xplain it. Hope you copy? |

Tallesty1:why is that i have to come here and correct people all the time?..that said. Back to main topic.." mark16:17-20:-and these signs shall follow them that believe(believers),in my name shall they cast out demons,THEY SHALL SPEAK WITH NEW TONGUES,they shall pick up serpents,if they drink any deadly thing it shall not harm them, they will lay hands on the sick and they(the sick) shall recover".. It is plain and clear that every believer can speak with tongues. Lemme explain 1cor12 for you..i used to misunderstand this very chapter,bt thank God for his infinite wisdom.it has been made clearer to me now..usually i can spend one hour explain this..lemme make it as plain as possible.. Lets take Apostle Paul as an example,Paul did function in all the gifts of the spirit. 1cor14:18:-"i thank my God i speak with tongues more than you all"..Paul is telling them at the corinth church that he speaks with tongues more than all of them..from this,Paul speaks with tongues. If you read through the book of acts, you will see how paul demonstrated word of knowledge gifts, word of wisdom gifts, discerning of spirituals gifts, you will see also how he demonstrated healings, working of miracles.. The same thing applies to Apostle Peter,he spoke with tongues in Acts2,healed the lame in Acts3;demonstrated word of knowledge gift in Acts5. Same thing goes for philip and many others.. With these examples,we can conclude that a believer can function in all the gifts of the spirit.. Just laying foundation sha.. Back to 1cor12.. The background of this chapter is simply abt MINISTRY GIFTS.how that we all have our different ministries but we are needed to function together.so we can complement each other. 1cor12:4:-"there are diversities of gifts, but the same spirit" 5there are differences of ministries(administrations),but the same Lord 6And there are diversities of operations but it is the same God that works all in all.. Lemme stop there a bit and explain. Paul explains that there are diversities of Gifts and differences in ministries,by reading contextually you will see that vs5 will be pointless without vs4,we must always read in context..the differences in ministry will be in the Diversities of gifts. Vs7 states something that is very vital 1cor12:7."but the manifestation of the spirit is GIVEN TO EVERY MAN for the profit of all(or for the common Good)". The manifestation of the spirit is given to all of Us. In 1cor12:14-28-30:-Paul simply explains the fact that one person does not have all the ministries(notice that i did not say gifts). When you check the KJV ,you will see that the word "are" is in italics..words in the bible that are in italics means that that word is not in the original text. The original word there is NOT. 1cor12:29:-Not all are apostles, not all are prophets... Paul simply explains that all of us do not have the same ministry. SELAH |

sportsmaster:Thanks for this long explanation but could you please answer this question. Is speaking in tongues the only evidence a person has received the Holy Spirit? if "No" is your answer then read the op again and you will understand my first comment. But if your answer is yes then I will be very glad if you can tell how. |

Tallesty1:. Sorry for late reply..i was not around.was busy..back to the main topic. All through the book of Acts, speaking is tongues is the most dominant sign that came with the infilling of the holy Ghost.. Acts2:1-8:-"and they were filled with the holy Ghost and began to speak with others tongues" another example is Acts 8..when Philip went to preach at Samaria..when the apostles heard that the people at samaria had recieved the word, they sent unto them Peter and John, and when they laid they thier hands on them, they were filled with the holy Spirit and they spoke with tongues.. Acts10:38-44;- at the house of cornelius, when the holy spirit came upon them, they spoke with other tongues and prohesied. Acts 19 The folks at Acts19.that paul met on his journey to Ephesus..when the laid his hands on them, they were filled with the holy Ghost and spoke with other tongues and they even prophesied. |

richmans: from the very first day you believed the Gospel of christ, that is when you have been given that Gift see mark16:15-18. If you are yet to speak with tongues, the reason most times is that either you are not informed enough or unbelief. Just have faith in God and say following words. speak these words with faith "HEAVENLY FATHER,I THANK YOU FOR YOUR SPIRIT,I THANK FOR YOUR GIFT OF TONGUES.I THANK YOU BECAUSE UTTERANCE IS MADE AVAILABLE RIGHT NOW FOR ME.THAT I FLOW EFFECTIVELY WITH THE GIFT OF TONGUES IN JESUS' NAME" i am sure utterance will come to you.you are the one to give voice to these utterances, the holy spirit will not force your mouth open..open your mouth and give voice to the utterances that comes...it is best to be alone while doing this so as to avoid distractions. |

He that is far away will die of the plague, and he that is near will fall by the sword, and he that survives and is spared will die of famine. So will I spend my wrath upon them. And they will know I am the Lord, when the people lie slain among their idols around their altars, on every high hill and on all the mountaintops, under every spreading tree and every leafy oak ...."
