Debt From Home (a killer's instinct) continued.

He jammed the brakes of his Corolla and the car drew to an abrupt halt. He checked the side mirrors, there was no suspicious movement behind, he had a feeling that someone had been tailing him. He pressed a button and the windows rolled up before he quenched the engine.

He stepped out of the car, tied a red scarf around his head in a TuPac style, lighted a Benson cigarette and immediately puffed out the smoke. He coughed and nearly choked, he was never a smoker but must look like one today. He had to look like a gangster if he was gonna stand a chance of getting any info about the shootings of last night in this neighbourhood that bred gangsters. He tried another drag at the cigarette, this time, going about it in a slow manner, he didnt choke. That was fine, he was learning fast!

His attire reeked every inch a hardboiled gangster. A big white T-shirt, a black combat short and an ugly looking dark green boots. Transformed from a shrewd detective to a gangster, life is good!

He carried himself like an Italian mafian, bouncing with quick-slow stride, occasionally taking a slow drag at his cigarette.

The street was not as noisy as he had heard, a street infamous for its ghetto life. The shooting might have mellowed the tempo here. Peolple stood in groups smoking weed and talking in hushed voices, they threw a curious look at him as he bounced pass them.

He was about opening the gate of the New Heaven Joint when a dark fella wearing a dirty white singlet and a ragged blue jean sprang up from the corner where he was doing justice to his marijuana. He stood in his way and shot out two muscled hands side ways and spat into his face.

" Comot here! " he yelled in pidgin. His breath was bad and his voice was cracked and funny, made funny from many years of patronizing weed.

Ike looked behind, people were watching........

Ike looked behind, people were watching. Red sulky pairs of eyes looking at him anxiously for a reaction. Why go back when he needed to see for himself what had happened inside that joint. Suddenly, he had an idea. This was a good opportunity to consolidate his reputation as a no- nonsense gangster and he took it .

The muscular guy with the bad breath took a step closer, he was now wearing an evil grin, his teeth chattered and made disgusting sounds, his red eyes as dead as ever. He was livid, Ike's refusal to yield had infuriated him.

Without warning, Ike who had already taken a long drag at his cigarette puffed a full blast of thick smoke into his adversary's face. The man started back, coughed as the smoke momentarily interfered with his breathing. His face squeezed in full blown anger. For a second, Ike thought the man reminded him of an angry chimp.

The smoke was a bait and he fell for it.

He turned back, lifted an empty bottle of beer off the ground, crashed it on his own head and the bottle broke into half. The chimp held one half at the mouth and like a viper, he charged at Ike. Ike shifted his head reflexively to the side, the sharp edge of the bottle missing his face by the whiskers. He flung the bottle to the ground, folded his fingers into a fist . He lashed out a blind left at an expectant Ike, who quickly ducked under it and connected him with a right jab at the position of his chest bone, putting a great strength into the punch. The man recoiled in pain, the punch had felt like a sledge hammer. In his painful position, he left his jaw open and it did suffer. In a fraction of a second, Ike bent on one knee and unleashed a killer uppercut at his jaw, Chimp cried out sharply but his cry was smothered as Ike grabbed his head and struck it against his waiting knee.

His head wobbled, his eyes saw white stars, a steady buzzing noise disturbed his ear, blood trickled out of his nose, his legs gave way and he folded on the ground. His breathing was irregular.

Ike spat on him as he lay on the ground. That's what they do in those gangsters movies, he thought.

Now, bouncing with swagger, he walked into the compound of the New Heaven Joint. A handful of guys with nasty scars across thier faces stood in front of the bar chatting.

He crooked a finger and signalled one to come over. The guy, an albino with black spotted skin and dull dark lips cast an unsteady hollow green eyes at him, unsure if Ike was worth his presence.A pal beside him pointed to the direction of the gate, whispered into his ear and the albino suddenly looked shocked, disbelief written all over his face. Whatever he was told must have convinced him as he dashed to where a standing Ike was waiting.

"No vex, abeg . " He pleaded in a rare pidgin accent. Ike placed him to be a Deltan or of Edo origin. His reputation was already getting him the much needed result - respect.

He brought out a cigarette pack from his pocket, singled out a stick and handed over to his new friend. The albino accepted the gift with shaky hands, two shaky hands. Ike lighted the cigarette for him, patting him softly at the back. The albino was uncomfortable with the kind gestures, but he didnt complain. His green eyes and his egg- shaped head still danced around aimlessly and ceaselessly, Ike was unsure if he was staring at him or somewhere else.

They walked into the bar together. Ike asked questions and he answered. He gave a detailed information of the events of yester-night. He said he knew all this because he was here last night to catch some fun. He didnt mix the points : the assailant was a girl, she had a golden hair but he was not too sure about that, she had an ALOBAM fez-cap, she was alone. Ike simply nodded and assimilated the piece. He didnt jot on any pad because he didnt bring any, that would give him out.

Ten minutes later, he made his way to where the shooter had supposedly sat. He squated down, taking a closer and thorough look at the ground, the place had not been swept. He was not hoping to find anything, there were pieces of broken bottles and bottle corks. ........... then his keen eyes picked up something. It was the wrap of a Nestle Mint.

He pulled out his handkerchief and carefully picked up the wrap.

Debt From Home........

He drove to his home at Transamadi Layout, showered and changed clothes. He was done acting a gangster, though he couldn't help thinking the lifestyle was better without the smoking side. He checked himself in the mirror, he looked good. The dark blue trouser and the white fitted long-sleeved shirt gave him the look of a perfect gentleman. He disliked ties and never wore one. His shoe was Gucci, a black polished pair that blended well with his attire.

He opened a drawer and retrieved a .38 police special pistol. He checked the magazine, convinced it wasn't empty, he tucked it behind him, at the place where his leather belt wound round his waist. He threw a black blazer over his shirt and descended the stairs two at a time. He was late to the hospital and Clara could be worried.

Twenty minutes later, he pulled up in the parking lot of Gloryland Hospital. The hospital was about the best in Portharcourt city.

It is a 3-storey that boasted of 9 operating rooms, 35 private beds and 12 ICU beds. The interior includes spaces with auditorium-style seating, modern lounge areas and cool tones to give the building a modern feel. Patient rooms are warm and comfortable, utilizing elements like hardwood floors, late windows and sleek finishes to make a patient's stay more like a luxury retreat than a recovery period.

The hospital was the best and his Clara deserved the best too. He was paying good money to have her treated here, in the hands of trusted professionals.

A security approached him with a metal-detector, the detector blinked and made a sound. The security frowned his face but Ike calmed his fears by flashing him a badge. The man stiffened and saluted, Ikem dismissed him and walked into the building.

A very fat looking nurse asked him a couple of questions and he answered. She produced a paper and he filled it. Ike continued to the ICU section until he located Clara's private room. Clara was lying on her side, snoring lightly. She looked younger than her twenty-seven year age on the sky-blue hospital cloth she was wearing. Her head was neatly bandaged above the face.

Ike gently sat beside her and watched the slow rise and fall of her chest. A wave of emotion overtook him and a drop of tear rolled down his cheek. She was the only important person in his life he had nearly lost her. Two days ago, he had found her lying unconscious in a pool of blood in her room. Her room had been turned upside down ; drawers were open, her clothes scattered, her bags open, her mattress torn from the center. Seeing her alive, he swore never to leave her again unprotected. A question still ate at his mind ; who had attacked her? And why?

She turned around on her back and opened her eyes. It took her eyes some seconds to adjust to the brightness of the room before she saw the figure sitting close to her. Fear was her first expression and it vanished as fast as it had come, replaced with a relaxed look of relief.

An observant Ike had seen her flinched in fear and he wondered what nightmare had been haunting her. He leaned closer and met her face, showing great care not to exert any pressure on her bandaged head. His lips met hers, he parted them with his prodding tongue. Her mouth felt warm and moist and he allowed his tongue to run exploits. They kissed breathlessly for a minute before disengaging.

She looked into his cute eyes, touched his lips with her finger and giggled. She made an effort to sit up but Ike held her back with a gentle push.
" You don't have to stress yourself, bae. " He said in a whisper.

There was a soft knock at the door and a bald head doctor walked in. He did a routine checkup on Clara, noted something on his blue folder.
" Doc " Ike called, extending one hand to him.
" Detective, it's good to see you again. " His english was polished. They shook and Ikem: observed that his palm was soft and fleshy.
" We were able to remove the bullet from her head. I think your lady is a lucky girl .... her skull was thick enough to narrow the penetration of the bullet" he paused to steal a glance at Clara and continued, "she is going to need a close watch for the next two days before we can certify if she is fit checkout."
"One more thing, your lady is a month pregnant," the doc added.

Ike was about to respond to the joyous news when the fat nurse interrupted them with her arrival. " Sorry sir, but your brother has been waiting, he wants to see you."

That was enough to send Ike into action. He had no brother and he had come alone, whoever was impersonating as his brother had followed him here. He whipped out his gun and cautiously opened the door with his free hand. The nurse who was following behind pointed in the direction of an empty chair at the left wing of the lounge.
" He was there! " She quaverred.
