I was expecting that...It doesn't come as a surprise....They finally will get a chance to put their crowd control training into practice8) cool...

Back to the topic....another use of the wer'wolf MKII was found...demining..Its ironic that the SWAPO led Government had to demine electricity pylons from the Ruacana Hydro power station becoz the SADF had mined them to protect them from SWAPO combatants in the first place grin grin grin...Anyway the story behind is that a section of pylons were too steep and rocky for specialist equipment and Army deminers were not going to work on pylons 'protected' by the J69 bounding fragmentation mine set with trip wires and the area densely vegetated..Dogs are not sensitive to trip wires plus the rocky terrain would have meant the dogs would be far more probably concentrated in finding their footing ..All a recipe for disaster....So they drove the wolf over the mines

KDF kills seven al Shabaab militants in Somalia

Seven al Shabaab fighters were killed in a gunfight with the Kenya Defence Forces in Somalia's Lagolei area in Elade, Gedo. One KDF soldier lost his during the incident.

KDF said the militants had planted an Improvised Explosive Device which was run over by a vehicle carrying soldiers before the firefight ensued.

“ The troops were on routine duties in the environs of Elade when their vehicle was hit by an IED laid by Al Shabaab terrorists. The soldiers pursued the terrorists and in the ensuing firefight , seven Al Shabaab terrorists were killed, eight AK 47 rifles , two grenades and assorted ammunition were seized.

KDF lost a soldier while another was injuired and is receiving necessary medical attention,” Col Dadiv Obonyo, the KDF military spokesman said today.

He said that there has been increased al Shabaab activity following sustained pressure by AMISOM troops in Somalia particularly following the deployment of Ethiopian troops in Bay Bakool region.

KDF airstrikes hit two al Shabaab vehicles in Somalia

The Kenya Defence Forces launched two airstrikes in Tula Barwaqo and Quarat, Somalia on Sunday amid operations against al Shabaab.

KDF spokesman David Obonyo said two of the militants' armored vehicles were hit, but could not confirm the number of casualties.

Obonyo said the entry of Ethiopian troops into Somalia forced the militants to move in search of safer hideouts, landing on territory occupied by KDF.

The airstrikes were not retaliatory, he told the Star on phone on Monday.

Last week, 3,000 Ethiopian troops in armoured vehicles were said to have entered Somalia to attack the town of Bardere which was still under al Shabaab control.

The terrorist group intensified attacks on Kenya and Somalia during the Ramadhan period, killing 14 quarry workers in Mandera on Tuesday last week.

In Somalia, at least six civilians and four militants were killed when the militants attacked two hotels in Mogadishu on Friday, police said.

Ugandan defence forces to deploy choppers in Somalia

Kampala- The army is planning to deploy choppers in Somalia to reinforce military operations against Somali insurgents who have heightened attacks against military and civilian population in Mogadishu in the last three weeks.
This will be the first time Ugandan military helicopters are being deployed in Somalia after the first attempt in 2013 disastrously ended with three out of four choppers crashing in Kenya on their way to Mogadishu, killing seven soldiers.
The army spokesperson, Lt Col Paddy Ankunda, told Daily Monitor yesterday that the “air assets” would make mobility of Ugandan soldiers deployed in central and south east of Somalia easier.
“I can only confirm to you that we are in the process of deploying air assets to support our military operations in Somalia,” he said.

They all so cost a lot of money. A thermal imager costs more than the rifle and body armour of a basic solder. That's the big imager not a sight that is made small. They all so easily broken. So over all a poor choice for grunts. A 1000 foot rocket flare with parachute would be more useful to the grunts.

Mostly special force uses such eQuipment of special missions. About two years ago I came across a camerounian soldier with a "french famas" riffle mounted with an advance thermal imaging scope, these r countries that Nigeria his far richer than !

Interesting Recce capabilities come to light:

Other South African military elements that will take part in Exercise Oxide include the air force (a C-130BZ, a C-47TP, a Super Lynx embarked on the deployed frigate and an Oryx medium transport helicopter), Special Forces including a submarine team, a submarine parachute action group and an airborne team

How do these guys fit into the Recce's?

What is the dedicated sea unit of the Recce's?

4 Recce.

It is bigger than the Limpopo based 5.

You'll rarely hear about them since the SANDF conducts most of its operations in land. Though they do conduct ops in land like the famous Operation Collage in Angola. So they receive less attention than the guys deployed with UN peacekeepers from 5.

They jump into the sea with a boat from an aircraft to help subs, UK has a similar SPAG unit. On standby 24/7.

They're mostly with the navy during anti-piracy ops.

Majority of their ops like raids launched from the strike crafts and Daphne subs during the Bush war remain shrouded in secrecy.

53 Al-Shabaab Killed In Two Military Raids

Fifty-three Al-Shabaab terrorists, among them 10 top commanders, were on Thursday killed in two separate dawn attacks on one of the terrorist group’s planning and operation bases in Somalia.

The first attack by a US drone took place in Juungal, between Baardheere and Buur Hajje, at around 2am where two top commanders identified as Jama Deere and Ismael Jamhad were killed.

An hour later, the Amisom forces launched an artillery attack in Jungal, about 40km West of Bardhere in the Gedo Region, where 51 terrorists, including several middle-level commanders behind the Mandera attacks were killed.

Military spokesman Colonel David Obonyo said that a total of 11 pickup trucks mounted with machine guns were destroyed and an unknown number of terrorists escaped with injuries to Bardheere.

“Jungal was one of the main Al-Shabaab planning and operations bases in (the) Gedo region which has seen an increase in militia activities recently. The strike at Jungal is therefore a major setback to the terrorists,” said Colonel Obonyo.

The killing of Mr Deere and Jamhad in the US drone attack is part of an intensified campaign by the United States against terrorists in Kenya and Somalia.

uganda Air force L 39 training aircrafts at the Gulu Airbase

The Chief of Defense Forces, General Edward Katumba Wamala has called for increased investments in the Air Force which, he described as a very critical force multiplier that will help in the success of Ugandan combat missions.

He says the operations and advancement of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), is being delayed because the UPDF does not have enough military multipliers like attack helicopters and cargo helicopters.

African defense industries do not have a serious future. African militaries are gradually forgetting about the possibility of an armed face off between any two nation in the continent, they feel the world outside piety them to much to fight them. To the string pullers in the MOD we live in a very peaceful continent, with the known threats only coming from rag tag militias.
