The car had just passed the Alagbon Area of the Ikoyi axis, the place where the Nigeria Immigration Office is situated. Looking to the left was the walls of the Dordan Barracks from a different perspective on the eastern part of Ikoyi.

This particular place was memorable because it was the place the late General Muritala's car on his way back from the Mosque was sprayed with bullets which led to his death In a coup led by Dimka. There was a roundabout with the statue of Guns mounted together and a soldier holding one in a salute.

Inside the car that sped pass the statue was a driver who had his left hand on the wheel, the right on his laps. He was on a purple T-shirt and a black jeans. He whistled the tone to a music as he picked his spectacles and put it across his face.

Beside him was his accomplice whom they had both went on the mission they were sent. He was on a stripe white and blue shirt, a black shade worn on his face; a black jean hung down his waist and a white and black all-star to his feet, to match.

A car zoomed pass them with horn blaring noisily as though it were an ambulance or a Police van. Then the driver's phone rang.

“Na boss dey call o!” He informed the guy beside him as he picked the phone off where he had kept it and clicked on the green button.

“Hello boss! How far na?”

“Na me suppose to dey ask you that question,” was the sharp reply that came out of the receiver, “how e go?”

The driver laughed a bit, looked at his accomplice who return the gesture with a broad smile, his mouth gnashing gum all about vociferously.

“Boss, the thing go wella. You suppose trust me and Blacky na, we no dey do job make e no clean.” He praised.

“Hope say the rat no see una?”

“At all boss. In fact she no even suspect say anybody dey monitor her.”

“Okay! Una don know the school now?” The reciever inquired. The network assuden cracked and the driver couldn't hear him clear.

“Hello boss, I no hear wetin you talk.”

“Hello, I no hear!” He removed the phone from his ear and held it in a grimace to know may be the call had ended but not, it wasn't.

“Boss, na network. I go call you back.” He ended the call and dialled the number.

When the receiver had picked the call, he repeated, “hello boss, na network. I dey hear you now. Wetin you talk before?”

“I say shey una don know the school now?

“Arh, sure boss! We don know am. We even enter the school. The school big no be small, e be like say na boarding school self.”

Since he knew he couldn't concentrate anymore on his driving, he decided to park the car to his right - close to the V.I.P burial ground situated between the Nigerian Movie Censors Board and Radio Nigeria Studio.

“Which kind mumu boarding school you dey yarn?” Was the immediate reply from the receiver.

He thought may be the assignment had been carried out wrongly. `be like say them these boys just chase shadows go.' He said in his in mind, in bile.

“come, una sure say na the person wey dey that picture wey we give una - una follow?”

“Arh boss, you no trust me?”

His colleague looked at him when he heard him say that. Does it mean the boss was questioning their integrity? Moreover, it wasn't the first time they were carrying such form of assignment out for him or whoever he introduced. Perhaps, things had changed with their boss, yet, it was needed he had a clue they couldn't mess up.

“I no sure say na the school una go or even the girl una trail.” The receiver was becoming audible.

“I mean say the school big like one kind university!” Dragon was complicating matters. He already misconstrued the description saying it was a boarding, - now, he was saying it looked big, perhaps it were a university campus they had gone.

Though he tried to convince his boss ranting on but got no reply from the receiver - that - he thought the call had been ended and he was just speaking vainly.

The boss on the other end was seated with his friend whom he was helping out. He took the phone away from his mouth, held it a wit slant upwards to his ear, meanwhile still close to his ear.

“Wait, shey the school na boarding or na university cause wetin them these guys dey talk, me no understand o.” He said out of the phone.

“Give me the phone mah talk to them first.” He collected the phone from his friend.

“Hello Dragon, abeg give the phone to Blacky make I ask am something.”

“Black, oga friend wan follow you talk.” He stretched the phone towards him.

“Hello Sir, na Black be this,” he said aloud when he had collected the phone and placed it on speaker.

“Wetin them paint outside of the school wey una talk say una go?” Was the question that hollowed out the speaker, the voice wasn't that clear.

“Boss, na all this art work them draw for outside the wall. The wall long well well na him make Dragon call am university.”

“I talk say wetin them paint the school?” The receiver fumed.

“Sorry sir! Na cream and light brown with small small blue them use do the work.”. He comport himself.

The receiver nodded at his end to his friend who acknowledged it.

“Be like say na the school them go.” He concluded and handed the phone back to his friend to continue the discussion since he knew the boys better. He was just a principal who had brought a job for execution.

“Good!!!” He collected the phone back, “na the school be that and be like say na the girl una follow true true.” He completed.

“Yes boss!” They both smiled.

“Na the girl!” Dragon put in, “she fat small like that and her hair dey loose. She get one kind long hair like mammy-water.” He described.

“So how e go be now?” The boss ignored his bicker, going straight to the point.

“We manage go round the school when them start assembly and we hear say be like na tomorrow be their inter-house sport.”

“Oh, nice job. I trust you. I knew you people can't disappoint me,” he eulogised, “so wetin be the plan now?”

“Boss. One, we get work tomorrow. We'll make sure we get to ask around about the guy she was seen with the other day. We might use him to lure her out of a crowd if she happens to be amisdt any.”

“Wow! Wow!! Wow!!! Nice plan, I buy that idea. That's somewhat a plan B, very good!” He put the phone on speaker too at his end so his friend who he was helping on the job could hear the progress the boys were making.

“So do we have the boys name or details and how do we intend to get it - if need be?”

“We got that sorted already boss. We were able to get a girl like that. We questioned her some few rounds and she was able to offer us what we need but not without paying her off with 8k Sir.”

“Wow! I'm awed with the progress you people have made so far. I didn't expect you people could do all this in a day. But about the girl, and she was willing to give you all the info with just 8k? I'm surprised!!!” The boss enthused.

“I also haven't been this surprised myself boss. She was like a messiah, as if she knew who we were there for. She gave us all we needed to know about the guy and the girl, possibly the place we could get them without suspicion.”

Blacky interjected light faced, and gave a signal for Dragon to start the car so they could start moving again, at least the phone was on speaker now.

Dragon in turn ignited the engine and started driving - after he had viewed there was no vehicle coming from his left view through the rear-view mirror. He paid attention to the conversation, yet, focused on his driving.

“Good! Good!! Good!!! So what's the next step right now? Are we going for the big shot tomorrow?”

“It's tomorrow definitely boss. We get everything sorted tomorrow!” Blacky promised, looking at Dragon who nodded in affirmation.

“Good! please, leave no trail behind. Make sure this is a tight job and no one gets to have a clue.” Boss dished out with extreme seriousness.

“Be rest assured boss. We have everything planned already!”

Before he could finish speaking, Salisu broke in, “please make sure you get that recording from her. Destroy the phone if possible and please, don't let it be known about my identity.”

“Trust us boss. This won't be bleeped. we'll make it as clean as possible!”

“Very nice, goodbye!” Was the last sentence and the phone beeped call end.

Update dedicated to Thronekid. Thanks so much for checking on me bro! God bless you!!! smiley

As she walked towards the Junior school building, she ignored the promenade and jumped tyres, then flowers. There about were students playing; some of them dug hole in the ground and filled it with `Agbalumo' seeds to parody a popular game associated with the men of old, mostly Villagers - the game, `Ayo.'

They sat in twos with a single person waiting for set at about four stations under the fruit tree. Few distance away from the tree were female students jumping inside drawn-boxes in the soil, to play the popular `Suwe' game.

Three different patterns of the Suwe game were drawn on the soil at different points - female bending to pick up their seed with a leg raised, a leap, a skip and then, the jumping continued.

Some of the remaining students had gone to the field to practise for the last time; match-past; race and other events for the inter-house sport which was tomorrow.

Perhaps, these playing at the front of the school were those who participated in Clapping Competition. You would know them very well!

Miss Yemisi avoided colliding with any student as they joyfully made use of the last week of the school. She stepped across the pavement, a left turn got her right inside the principal's office, a front desk officer was sitting there.

“Sorry, can I see the Principal?” She asked the woman; a mother of about 45years of age; her fairness was dent a big blow by the cream she had been using just to get fair. She wore a native Adire blouse and wrapper, and tied a scarf which didn't match the cloth across her head.

“The Principal is not in her office right now, she's gone to the District.” She informed her, adjusting her spectacles which hung a little below her nose, right back up her nose.

The pancake she had rubbed on her cheek to blur the burnt part of her face didn't do the work as the black part shone out of the pancake powder.

“When would she be back?” Miss Yemisi checked her wristwatch to know what the time was.

“I have no idea at all.”

Miss Yemisi wasn't happy, she was distressed at what she had just heard. How could the Principal just go out when she had decided to report that stupid boy to her? She had intended the Principal would give him more punishment to the one she had already given him.

She wanted a case whereby he could be suspended, flogged on the assembly ground; she wanted to have him disgraced so much. She wish she could do that to erase the next best thing they had labelled him with, the morning.

Then still standing in the Principal's office, the thought of Kunle crossed her mind. She was doing all this because of Kunle. Oh, how she loves him now!

She had vowed this chance she was giving him was going to be spent in a way that no issue would develop for them to quarrel again. She was determined to stay clear of anything that would get him angry. Not even when she knew he was the one at fault, she was ready to plead and sort things out.

“Okay, thank you!” She finally checked herself and left the office.

Fatimah had remained restless since Adefemi's has been out there cutting grass. She had constantly peeped through the fancy blocks to look at him. She saw him sweating, crying, at the same time he cut the grass along in anger.

She was looking for a way to go out and meet him to talk to him but she wasn't sure he would be calm to listen to her. She wanted to know what exactly was between him and Miss Yemisi - that could cause the show off that had happened some few minutes ago.

She decided to give it a try, meanwhile she was ready to face anything he would say to her. If he would curse her or shout at her, she was ready for it.

As she stepped out of the class, she peeped around the corridors to see may be Miss Yemisi was in sight and when she couldn't find anyone who looked like her, she walked across the lawn to where he was cutting grass going deep into the bushy part which was a bit swampy.

“Fatimah, please go back, your uniform would get stained. This place is filled with water and your shoes will get stuck in mud.”

He sniffed in mucus, not looking up, he had seen the shadow of her approaching. He knew with the way the shadow approached, it was Fatimah.

She knew he wouldn't be bad to talk to with what he had just said, so she drew closer, “George!” She called but got no reply.

“George!” She called out again in a more romantic tone.

“George! I know you are probably not in a good mood to talk now but I will like to stay here with you all the while.” She completed and went to sit on a stone that rested beside the Snail project House which they had contributed money for while in the Junior school to have a Snail poultry.

He didn't give her a reply, he continued to cut the grass, throwing his tie that was distracting him backwards to his shoulder. A drool of snort ran out of his nose and was about falling off through his mouth to the ground, he stood upright and wiped it with the back of his left hand.

His back ached slightly due to the bent he had maintained for the past 30minutes.he had suddenly grown strong, determined not to stop cutting or take a rest as he cut aggressively. He looked sideways and saw Fatimah seated on a stone. Her face was pale and sad as she watched him with pity.

“You don't have to remain in this sun because of me. I'm not clinton and meanwhile, I deserve the punishment I am serving now!” He cursed underneath his breath without looking at her.

“See,” she rose up immediately, “you don't have to speak to me anyhow just because I have come to comfort you! I know you are not Clinton!” She hissed and made to get away very angry.

“Wait!” He halted her as they backed each other.

“I'm sorry Fatimah but I'm not myself. I don't know what has gone wrong with me. I'm sorry. I don't really know what I did to that woman, she hates me with passion now!” He sobbed and wiped his face immediately.

She was filled with pity for him once again. She knew she couldn't leave him alone. He was the best friend she's got, since Mariam and Zainab had gone solo. Though she had been hearing rumours flying around that people had been telling Zainob, Adefemi's Gf that she was dating him. However, she cared less. Since Clinton, her boyfriend wasn't angry about it and he understood it as just mere friends, she didn't give a flying f^ck.

“If no one cares for you George, I do!” She turned and walked close to him.

“She's probably jealous cause she heard what the Principal said about you this morning.” Fatimah touched his left arm, “but I'm proud of you!”

“But how can she be jealous?” He put in sharply, “she pushed me some weeks ago into stagnant water!” He felt sad.

Fatimah was taken aback by this she was just hearing. She never knew this happened before. Though, she has heard people saying he was Miss Yemisi's boyfriend but he had dismissed it as a joke. Didn't Mrs Smalls' also make joke of it the other time?

“Are you sure you didn't offend her? I know there is nothing between you two!” She said that to see may be she could get him to confess to her.

“I did nothing wrong Fatimah! And she assuden changed towards me. I wish I knew what I did wrong to her!” He bowed his head in sorrow.

“Okay, don't worry! I will talk to her! Will you still be going with us to the Award Ceremony?”

Hours later, Miss Iton the English teacher had finished with the class she was doing revision with. She got down from the stairs, her hands stained with chalk. She stood along the walkway looking forward.

“Hey Victor, please call me Fatimah!” She spoke at the top of her voice because he was a far distance away from her.

Victor stood resting his hands on the door frame - peeping inside the classroom and called out “Fatimah!!!”

“Fatimah,“ he called again but didn't get a reply. “Hey guy, abeg shey Fatimah no dey her seat?”

“Nobody resemble her for here! May be make you ask her friends, dem go know where she go!”

“Hey Mariam, you even dey there you no fit answer when I dey call your friend. You no get sense?” Victor was now standing inside the class.

“Na you no get sense,” Mairam cursed back, “shey I be her nanny wey I go know where she go?”

“If no be say na school we dey, I for don light you one slap!” Victor said and made to leave the class.

He looked ahead at his left to see may be Miss Iton was still standing, so he could inform her Fatimah wasn't in the class but she had gone inside the classroom.

He stared forward and recognised Fatimah standing with Adefemi, her skin was the opposite of Adefemi's, as he was so black, the sun had rendered him burnt.

He drew close a little and shouted at the top of his baritone, “Fati, Miss Iton dey call you!”

She immediately got up from the stone where she had been discussing with Adefemi and made for the Staffroom. As she walked, she saw senior students standing at the balcony of the second and third floor, resting on the railings. She ignored their gaze and hastened her steps.

“Ma, you called me!” She said when she had gotten to the front of Miss Iton's desk.

“You people should get ready, we'll be going soon. Your seniors are ready and the programme starts by 11, we can't afford to be late.” She explained picking up her eye glasses and putting them on back after she had dropped the tissue she used in wiping the water she had used to wash the chalk powder off her hands.

“Urhmm! But Ma, Adefemi is serving a punishment. He was asked to cut grass by Miss Yemisi!”

“What” She exclaimed. “Someone I am taking out

She peered straight across Miss Iton's head without a reply. She wriggled her fingers between the thread that had suddenly picked out of her skirt.

One thing was certain, she couldn't say nothing as Miss Iton raged. She didn't know if she were to reply, what answer to give her. Did she even know what had happened between them in the first place. She thought about telling Miss Iton that it was George who had defied her but quickly cut the thought short.

“Miss Yemisi,” she called out with a bitter voice; her pronunciation a little off the british accent she had often used. What tongue was brought to her mouth was her mother's tongue, Ibibio. The red lipstick she ran against her mouth seemed to tape her lips and made her unable to pronounce well, as she went off mark saying `YE'mi'Si.' The stress on both the first and last syllable.

The staffroom was about a 20ft long and 12ft wide. It was painted with cream at all walls and the concrete ceiling, white emulsion.

Hanging close to the walls were labelled diagrams of different subjects that had a drawing or so to its Scheme of work or topic. A blackboard was cemented adjacent where Mr Iton was seated.

Miss Yemisi sat at the far end of the room while Miss Iton's table was close to the second and only opened door to the staffroom. Beside her table was another table which seated the Geography teacher called Mrs Ebesunu.

The big staffroom had the remaining four seats of other teachers' empty but with different books laid on the table with a table-cloth shielding the wood.

A student came out of an ante-room which had about three other teachers there. The ante-room also led to another room which accommodated the female Vice Principal.

On the other end was Miss Yemisi - bent on a novel on her desk, earpiece in her ears and she didn't hear Miss Iton's call.

“Excuse me Miss!” Miss Iton said in a top voice.

Fatimah turned her head and shoulder-girdle sideways to look why she wasn't answering; later she looked up and removed the earpiece from her ears.

“Did you punish George?” Miss iton had balanced her eye glasses well against the way it had rested fashionably on her nasal bone before.

Miss Yemisi gave a sobers'-nod and tried to force her lips apart.

“I need him now, because we are about setting off. I know very well you heard the principal announced that on the assembly ground. I mean the Award ceremony!”

Fatimah was just shifting gazes from one end of the speaker to the receiver.

Miss Iton had purposely said the last sentence to offend her because she couldn't understand why it was today of all day she was taking him out to the ceremony, - that will be attended by private and international schools across the country - that she had dared to punish him.

She turned to face Fatimah, shaking her head in pity of the young teacher who didn't have a clue how far one needs to go before becoming a teacher.

“Get George ready and, you should all gather here in the next 5minutes.

Meanwhile, communicate it to your seniors too,” she pointed upwards to the concrete ceiling to indicate her seniors were at the top floors even when she didn't need to be told.

“Okay ma,” Fatimah `curtsied' and left the classroom. Rays of light pierced into the opened door as she passed by.

Miss Iton focused on the three (3) dictionaries in her front. One, a dictionary of pronunciation. The second was Oxford Advanced Learners she had advised her wards to get - as the best; and the other whose author or title was unknown as it was bond with hard covers, no name or indication on it.

“I'm deeply sorry Ma,” came from the other direction of the room but Miss Iton wasn't bulged; she said in her mind `sorry for yourself, you id1ot!'

Some few minutes later, Adefemi had dusted himself up. Cleaned his shoes and was looking a bit spic and span. He bent to tie the shoe laces of his Grandfather dash me clark shoe he had managed to maintain since his JSS1 days.

Though he had bought about two shoes afterwards, he had brought this one out to be worn to the event as the two others were bent at the sole, evident his walk patterns.

He picked up his bag when he had finished knotting his tie. The moment he was about heading for the door, Fatimah said,

“I don't think we need to take our bags along. Miss iton didn't ask us to bring them along.”

“Okay!” He said and proceeded to the next class and handed the bag to his girlfriend, Zainob.

“Sorry you hear!” Said Zainob and she faked sobs, sniffing in what mucus wasn't out of her nostrils.

“I will see you when I come back. We need to talk.” He left the Commercial class and joined Fatimah and two others from his class that were going.

Zainab, Fatimah's friend was the fifth of them; she followed at a distance behind as she knotted her tie to her inner collar.

Fatimah gave details to her colleague to please help her go to the Senior classes and passed the instructions across to them as Miss Iton had given her. She Ignored Zainab's eyes as they all went up the stairs, Adefemi being the only one left behind.

Zainab hissed in an ill manner as she ascended the staircase.

Adefemi thought it was Miss Yemisi who had hissed until he turned left to face the staircase that he saw it was Zainab.

“You still haven't told me what's wrong between yourself, Zainab and Mariam.” He said to Fatimah in his voice that was starting to clear out off the tears he had shed.

“See George, don't worry. I will tell you later,” she knocked at the door to the SS1 science class.

“Yes! Who's there?” Mr Abawe, the physics teacher asked.

“I'm the one sir. Miss Iton asked me to inform those she's taking out that she's ready to leave.”

“If you amongst them, you are free to leave the class.”

He hadn't finished saying it when they had all rose up to leave. Some of them tucking in their shirt properly, while some adjusted their ties.

When they had crowded some 10minutes later, 5minutes past the time Miss Iton had instructed, she called them into the staffroom.

Fatimah sneaked away from the crowds without getting noticed by her teacher to where Miss Yemisi was seated.

She sat down immediately she got to her table, yet, paying attention to Miss iton's voice as they echoed out of the walls with her address to them.

“Good day ma,” she smiled boisterously as Miss Yemisi removed the earpiece from her ears and stopped nodding.

“Yes, how are you?”

“I'm fine ma. Sorry to disturb you really but I don't know how you might feel, yet, please forgive George whatever he might have done to you.”

Fatimah pleaded as she took her gaze off her, then to the novel, to the P.H.E textbooks on her table and then back to her face.

“That brat!!!” She sneered at the thought of his name.

Before Fatimah could open her mouth to say anything further, Miss Iton had rounded up what she was saying and the students began to file out of the staffroom, following her.

“Can I have your number ma? I will call you so that we'll talk better later today!”

“Okay then, but don't bother yourself about that id1iot!” She tore a piece out of her jotter and scribbled her number on it and handed it to Fatimah who had rose up from the chair.

“That's my number!”

“Thank you ma!” She put the piece of paper in her brea'st pocket and ran to catch up with her mates.

I will try to reconcile them back to each other, Fatimah thought as she increased her pace.

The bus they boarded dropped them off at the front of the MUSON centre. They waited a bit as Miss Iton paid the bus driver his charge, then they trudged behind her as she led the way into the gate.

There were gatemen all about, directing cars, school buses and vans in and out of the premises.

“Don't park there,” a slender man, 5ft 6 tall, ordered and hastened to catch up with the driver before he went out of the vehicle.

As the gateman ran, all what he wore seemed sumptuous. A blue combat trousers, a white shirt with some few blue tapes bordering about the shoulders and brea'st pocket - typical of a security personnel; his cap almost fell off, for it was an oversize; it swallowed up half of his head.

There were also some military men about, giving orders and using their whip when necessary.

“Danburuba, gettow ta here!” The a`boki soldier swiped his `koboko' at the touts that had come to lobby around, thinking it was one of those big men's event - where they often see dash.

“Please excuse me,” Miss Iton stopped a man in suit. He had a tag to his trousers, he was a steward at the event.

“Can you show us to SHELL hall, please?”

“Over there ma,” the official pointed to the entrance.

At the entrance; people stood, some where seated with a table before them and they were registering names of schools and given them the seat numbers and location reserved for them.

As Miss Iton went up the slant pass-way, then turned right to ascend the staircase, another man came up to her.

“Welcome Miss.” He brightened up to show his warmth, “what's the name of this school?”

“Wahab Folawiyo Senior High School,” Miss Iton fashionably spit out the name of her beloved school. Didn't she even know the name wasn't classy, compared to the names of schools coming to the event.

“Okay then. Please wait some minutes!” He said and went towards the school just arriving, Holy Child College.

The students matched down the school bus and followed the Reverend sister who was in a navy blue skirt; a white regalia; a medal tagged to the collar of her top which was a replica of the school badge. A diamond rosary hung down her neck.

The girls were all on their cream top, a darker shade of red skirt, immaculate socks were revealed out of their brown shoes. They were all uniform except for the different complexion and beauties.

Chattering began in ernest amongst them in plain english. Gossips about the school before them and laughter, picked up.

“You are welcome - Sister!” A lady approached the Reverend sister. “I should guess right, this is Holy Child College Ikoyi-West?” She inquired.

“Very well ma!” She replied all smiles.

“Oh ho!!! You can come along!” She led them to a table to register them; afterwards, they were led into the door of the SHELL hall to be seated where had been reserved for them.

The grumbles and dissatisfaction amongst the Wahabians, as to what nonsense was happening, mumbled about. They were here before those just being led inside the hall yet they had been bypassed.

But Miss Iton maintained her calm and while she looked at the students murmuring, there descended a deafening silence amongst them. The only sound that could be heard were the car horns, gatemen's orders and shoe soles clapping against the floor - as the British International School just arrived.

“You can now come along with the student, Madam!” The man that had come before, led them the same way the other lady had done with the students of the Holy Child College.

“I was thinking they'll answer these, just coming first before us again,” was bickered by a student of the senior class to her colleague.

“Femo, how far? Cheer up o!!!” Lazarus came and held him across the shoulder as they entered the hall.

Zainab ran up to Laz and held the hand he had deeped in his pocket while Fatimah walked briskly to catch up with Adefemi and listen to what Lazarus was saying.

“You see say babes na him full here. We gaz catch at least two before this programme finish. See all those babes for Holy child and that oyinbo school. Mehn, no dulling o!” He concluded.

“Arh Laa,...za...rus! You no know pass woman!” Fatimah rebuked as they separated and filled up the spaces they were directed to sit.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Adefemi was unlucky as he was the one called to sit on the last seat before the aisle on the 15th row. Beside him on the left was the head girl, Mercy, one of the most beautiful girl in the school. It was as if they had given her the Head Girl because she was the most beautiful girl in the school.

She was a 4ft 9, chubby, ebony girl, who was endowed with large breast and her ass were a mountain to climb.

As the hall decorated with white and green ribbons, red balloons was filled up; the programme began with the opening prayer; the opening speech and the event proper proceeded.

The MC started calling out names of winners in the just concluded Debate and Essay competitions; from the first to third positions respectively.

The Head Girl adjusted her body, “Hello George, how are you?”

Her voice was drowned by the echoes coming out of the speakers.

Miss Iton wasn't closeby, she was seated at the other end of the aisle which led to an exist to the rest room. Mercy took the opportunity to talk without minding her composure, as Miss Iton had advised they do.

“I'm fine Senior Mercy, thanks!” He replied turning sharply and bowing his head.

“Very well. I saw you cutting grasses this morning, what happened? Who punished you?”

Her cheeks quivered and her dimples lightened up.

She maintained her gaze on the stage and applauded when a student from a school in Abuja was called out as the student who took the first position in Essay, Abuja Education District 1.

“Nothing serious, Senior! And no one did.” He wasn't experienced and didn't get the scope, he continued to move his mouth and looked at her.

The Head Girl was timely when she spoke. She made sure it was when cheers and applauds were ringing around that she spoke - so that no one would guess she was disturbing or gisting!

“Oh, I see! But I know all about it.” She puzzled him.

“You mean” He couldn't finish up.

She broke in quickly, “yap, I know!” She smiled, looking at him with a depiction of piteous disposition written all over her face.

“I do know you are dating the P.H.E teacher!”

“Senior, that's not true! I don't even have a clue what it means by `dating'!” He retorted, trying to look away; looking at one of the ushers who passed by - sharing handouts of the Nigeria Stock Exchange Market dealings.

“Oh, I see! But the rumours are all about! You can't be denying it now because it's too late!” She geared at him.

“God!” He almost broke down, “Senior, I swear I don't have a clue!”

The noise and cheers were now continuous as a song was being aired by one of the invited artiste.

“Oh, poor you!” She gave a mocking laughter, “weren't you caught sitting with her close to Astro Turf! I know all about it, so don't act smart little ass!”

Adefemi's eyes were now generating little tears at the side of his eyes, they anticipated much pumps to take a leisure walk down his face.

“But that's not true. It's even ridiculous to think about!”

While he was trying to justify his claims, the name of Senior Mercy was echoed out of the speaker, with much adornment proceeding the name.

She almost lost touch of herself; she couldn't understand. Miss Iton never told them they were coming here to also receive Awards.

Her heartbeat increased thinking may be the names of noisemakers were being called out from the stage. She looked towards Miss Iton who replied with a blush, then a nod prompting her to get up and move - meanwhile those on the stage were waiting, asking themselves may be the winner hadn't come.

The applauds never seized from the audience. They didn't have any idea who she was, her face or appearance. Two female students of Queens College Port Harcount rose up as though one of them was Mercy, but they walked out through a side exit - going to the toilet.

She rose up trembling; forcing her way out of Adefemi's seat, used her big ass to rub him on the face.

He was lost in his fears of what had just happened. Before he could regain consciousness, all the people in the hall had rose up in applauds as the song `Stand Up, For The Champion,” blared out of the speakers.

Then all gazed descended on him as he rose rapidly; his applauds picking up from where others had stopped. He was flummoxed at the attention he got, he had to ask himself may be it was because of the ass Senior Mercy had used to rub his face, or the fact he was sitting down while others were standing or rather; his late applauds.

But Mercy's speech of how happy she felt saved him from being consumed by the peering eyeballs which was like when lights were switched off on rats in a cartoon.

“Wow!!! I'm so happy!” She placed a hand on the podium and the other one though shaking, she used it to adjust the microphone down to the height of her mouth. Her breath and heartbeat combined and shrieked out of the speakers.

“I'm absolutely short of words.” She shone her unsmudged tooth, then continued, “all I can say is, thanks be to God; to my teacher Miss Iton - who had guided and taught me some important things I needed to note and use against my Co-debaters in the finals; and I'm happy it all paid off well.”

There was a long pause but the audience made up for her to think by applauding her the more. Such was the things that happened unexpectedly, even the most confident lose their spunks.

“I also want to say a big thank you to my colleague who believed I could come out top.” She said and was about leaving the podium when the MC asked through the spare Microphone what she would like to say to those out there looking up to win the competition.

“For my Juniors in school and in diaspora, I say you can do it once you believe in yourself. Thank you!!!”

She was sent off the stage by a bout of applauds, cheers, whistles and music. A brand new HP laptop, a plague, a cheque of 100,000naira and a trophy were given to her.

“Congratulations Senior Mercy!” Adefemi quickly chipped in as soon as she got back to her seat. Others sitting around shook the hands of the most important person on the spur of that moment.

“Thank you George. I bet if you can work harder, you'll be here next year to receive same award.” She advised.

“Yap, I know! Thanks Senior!” Said he and concentrated again looking towards the stage.

“Do you like my ass?” Was the next question that came into his ears, as quiet as a snake would move through a rock without making a sound, without hissing.

“What's ass?” Adefemi almost invited people around.

“Shhhhhh!!” She restrained with a finger against her lips, “don't worry, since you don't know!”

Adefemi tried to ransack his brain may be he knew the meaning but nothing was forth coming. A determination to try harder fell on a treadmill.
He never seemed to have heard such word before.

“Well, you know your sister, Agnes, is such a good footballer!” Said he trying to send her mind off the earlier discussion.

“I know that already, so I don't need to be kept updated,” The sharp reply he got from her.

“Don't know how you managed to get those grades the Principal called out this morning. You seem so dull!”

He could read the reply was offensive. He tried not to say anything further remembering what had happened between himself and Miss Yemisi. It was this sort of friendliness that got him all into what was happening.

Then his mind took him to what Miss Yemisi had said, - that no one had ever treated her right. It now damned on him since he started talking to the lady, things hadn't been going rosy for him. Or she was the one who brought badluck of her ill-treatment into his life? He couldn't find a genuine answer to this, as he cursed and grumbled underneath his breath.

“Are you talking to me?” Mercy asked as they rose up for the closing prayer.

He gave her a negative nod for a reply without shifting gaze. He joined his hands together for the payers and shut his eyes.

After the closing prayer and vote of thanks, the students and their guardian found their square root.

There was no time allowed some schools to wait and socialise. Immediately a big size school bag with goodies and sorts inside were shared to students, many of those who brought their school buses; mostly Private and International schools, climbed on then and they started moving out of the gate one after another.

Public and government schools who had no school buses, all lobbied outside the gate to charter a public transport to their destination.

Then Miss Iton appeared from the crowd and went towards where her students had gathered; she ranted at Mercy.

“I can't explain how disappointed I am in you, Mercy!!!”

Mercy was taken aback as to what Miss Iton was driving at. Was it that she had caught her using her ass against a junior student's face or that she had talked all through the programme? She knew Miss Iton was very observant yet she couldn't give in to the fact she might have seen her from the far end she sat.

“I am disappointed to be your english tutor. You couldn't even give an impromptu speech out there! How then did you come out top of those you challenged at the finals?” She asked as though she weren't at the finals.

“Oh ma, I was surprised and met with amazement when I heard my name; couldn't fathom how I felt at that moment. I almost messed up my body cause my bladder became filled up in astonishment!” she defended herself.

“Better that you bladder burst,” she lashed out in british accent, her face becoming crumpled and lacking taste, lacking attraction, lacking the joy of a teacher who enjoyed the labour on her students had not been in vain.

“I have taught you for 6 good years in speech writing and Essays. I'm balked by your impervious tenor. More to imagine is that, you are sitting for WAEC in few months time. I'm so sorry for you!”

She concluded and immediately stretched her hands to stop a moving bus. Then she walked down to negotiate with the driver; her high heels knocking on the floor.

“Does she even know what it feels like in that position?” Mercy scoffed to her mates but got no reply.

“Will you slowpoke walk fast!” Miss Iton shouted when she was done with the bargaining.

The grasses rustled as the breeze came passing by the front of the Akande Dahunsi Memorial Grammar School. The sound of the football thumping against the foot of those who ordered them about could be heard.

“Kaka, allow!!!. I dey free!” Said a boy who was in his sport blue jersey top and a white short; Chelsea Fc shirt and a Madrid Fc short, plus a predator boot on his foot. He waved his hands in the air so his teammate could send a through pass across to him.

`Pffffffftttttt' the referee who was a borrowed official from Maroko High School, blew the whistle as the one who had impersonated Kaka went rolling on the floor like someone fighting an elusive chimpazee.

There were female and male students who stood resting on the railings to enjoy the match between their school and the school adjacent to theirs, the Ilado Community High School.

Principo was standing underneath a fruit tree at the front of the school and immediately he collected the snacks he had sent a junior student, he walked through the pavement a bit and climbed the staircase.

“Brother, Echo aloof say S.O.P meeting dey today!” He instructed Effiong.

“But which kind meeting again na? Me get parolz wey I wan pursue for closing time!” He frowned his face to his head.

“Guy, you dey with your 6 so, abi you wan make I treat your f^ck up? Na me, the whole number 1 of the rugged among all and sundry you dey follow dey troway!” He turned back assuden and threatened.

“I respect milordy Gboola!” He bowed and sailed his hands up, stamping his right feet on the concrete floor - like a soldier on parade.

“I send you make you pronounce, pronounce! Pronounce make dem know say person dey fall tomorrow and person go down!” He twisted his body as though bending to talk, “David must fall and Mariam must down.”

“Make I troway for them obolo(female S.O.P's) too?”

“Pronounce make dem here say, he who misses - misses hell!” He said in irony and walked off.
