Sorry to disappoint you sir, but getting admission is not entirely a function of ur cgpa. And to shock you more, what u consider high cgpa, may actually not be high when you have more than 50 applicants having higher grades and the dept can only take 30 or 40. You can't get into some programs directly, except you go through PGD, because they are too competitive. For some programs, you need to get a supervisor before you can be accepted, if you don't have a supervisor, u won't be accepted. And for some other programs, you just need to put in more effort in your SOP and make sure your referees write something good about you. So try and contact the school/dept before wasting another 100 dollars, ask questions and be sure what they really want.
Don't be discouraged, getting admission is not as difficult as you think......some of us got it at our first attempt.....and come to think of it, my CGPA is lower than yours....lol
Lastly, if you say getting admission is difficult, what will you say about getting visa? So it is too early to be discouraged sir!

I actually chose M.Eng to save myself the stress of looking for a supervisor who will hardly respond to your email. For the first application(UofM) I did, perhaps I was naive not to value the importance of a good SOP. But for the second(UofR), I'm sure it was excellent at least from the views of my former colleagues now in top US schools. The only aspect I may not be too sure of is the academic references. Of my two referees, one is a Dr. while the other is doing his PhD. Could that be an issue as opposed to using Profs? I no get Professor friends oh.

Hello guys, pls I want to ask if anyone in Canada knows about this school in Quebec- Institut National de Recherche Scientifique (INRS). I am going to get a skype interview for a PhD position with an assistant prof who's lab/research is conducted in English, but am worried if I will have to take classes in French. I checked the school website and it was in English.

Travelling Tip #2: PORT OF ENTRY(POE) ISSUES, DEPORTATION AND THE PROMISE LAND

Receiving your study permit approval from the CIC and finally preparing to arrive in Canada ought to be the most memorable experience in the life of a student. Often at times, the experiences are unforgettably disastrous for some people. I will share some experience gathered from friends on this topic and give a layman's advice on the best way to deal with it. If anyone ever saw Tom Hank's 2004 movie ' The Terminal" you may have an idea of how immigration checks at the port of arrival into a developed country. How will you feel if after a 20hrs long flight, you see your PROMISE land (Canada) but fail to enter ? How does deportation scare anyone? The answers are not far-fetched. A Port Of Entry( POE) is the legal entry point into a country (in this context your arriving airport where the immigration officers interrogate your documents before issuing you your study permit/work permit. Often, at times, students for some reasons best know to them choose the wrong flight routes or arrival destination airports. Lets look at this scenario, A student who is due to school in a university in Abuja books a flight with MM1 as his final destination. Any immigration officer will be suspicious. Why not arrival in Abuja but Lagos? why dont you have any connecting flight? An even better example is this. A student heading to a school in Halifax, Novas Scotia in the far Northern parts of Canada made Pearson Intl Airport In Ontario (way South) his final destination..Such a student has left himself opened to be devoured. Why not a connecting flight to Halifax, but Pearson in Toronto? What are your reasons? The stammering begins and the emotional and psychological demeanor is obviously exposing at this point. At this point, your fate is in the hands of the officer and your God. If your answers are unconvincing as was in the case of a lady yesterday in Toronto, then deportation is the result. You are at the border of Canaan, but cannot enter. Oya back to Lagos.

What you must know is the following:

1.Your letter approving your study permit you received in Nigeria from the CIC is not an authorization of AUTOMATIC entry into Canada
2. You have not gotten your study permit until it is issued to you by the immigration officer at the airport in Canada. What you carried all this while was a mere introductory letter and a visa to allow you to be processed for entry into Canada
3. If your final arriving destination is unreasonably far from your school or province you are likely to be interrogated, and worse case scenario deported.
4. Thousands of people arrival in Canada by the minute. Staying in an immigration queue at the airport awaiting your immigration process can be the most nerving moment in your travel tale. You are in a queue with arabs, aisans and other races. While some of these students enjoy the comapanionship of their parents or friends, you are rather alone by yourself in the queue intimidated by the mere look at how the officers attend and scrutinize those students before them. Your emotional, psychological and articulation balance will all be shaped by this bizarre atmosphere. Remember that the immigration officers have been psychologically trained to detect misinformation, lies..etc in your communication and documentation. Be well composed when in the queue and before the officer..Be consistent and straight forward in your answering.

Even though some students from Nigeria may have intentions of not really attendning the school upon arrival or have other agendas, You must not not choose the wrong destination points for final arrival. If your School is in Newfoundland, I beg pls use a connecting flight to get there...But wait? what if i have not much funds and I decided to stop over in say Toronto Or Montreal in Quebec and pick a bus to my school which is few hours drive? well, you must be ready to answer this concisely to the officer when he pokes such questions at you. If possible show him/her proof that you already booked a bus or car for that transit.. I know two guys of friends of mine who were painfully deported upon arriving in Pearson, Toronto (instead of Edmonton, Alberta) and Montreal, Quebec (instead of St. Johns, Newfoundland). Na your groundnut u dey go harvest for Montreal or Toronto? Maybe u dey go spend time with your long time borobor abi?

I HOPE THIS HELPS. HAVE FUN
may God be with you.

Using a profs should be a plus+ though cos my friend who is in UofM on scholarship said that.. But I don't think that should be d problem for your denial.. My two referees are Dr. They were my Paleontology lecturers in school, and I'm going for the same course,. I wrote all what they needed to write myself and I sent it to thier official/professional emails, which they just perused & copied on Dept letterhead & sent. My CGPA isn't as high as yours but I've been given a go-ahead by a Prof, and we've been talking like say na him be my papa. I'm just praying for admission, DEADLINE is Jan31 though, but I've submitted every needed materials..

*Did you gt a supervisor at both UofM and UofR before applying...??

An excellent SOP increases your chances of admission but does not guarantee it. This is why it is recommended to apply to 3-4 schools. From your post, it seems like you used your "excellent" SOP to apply to only one school. Even someone with a 4.9 CGPA is not guaranteed admission to every school they apply for. While CGPA and excellence of SOP are key factors, keep in mind that the admissions committee also decides whom to admit based on applicant compatibility with their program. Hope is not lost though... just apply to multiple schools with your "excellent" SOP and make sure to customize it to each school's program/courses/research.

Also, in the relative sense your CGPA is not necessarily that high given that there are usually a lot of other engineering applicants with much higher CGPAs.... I know this for a fact. This is not to discourage you, but to encourage you to find ways to make your application stand out to each school. For example, students with lower than average CGPAs sometimes get admitted if there was something in the application that stood out to the admissions committee.

Finally, ensure that your SOP is truly excellent. I have read several supposedly excellent SOPs that were actually the opposite.

1. Yes u can. Medicals is valid for a year. You just submit the medical sheet given to u after u did ur medicals that contains ur IME number and other pertinent information. CIC will use that to locate ur medicals on their server.
2.Let's have a look at ur profile, what u submitted and all in order to advise u better. Adding ur property document and statement of account is a plus and will work to ur advantage. You might want to keep ur SOA up to 1million naira if u can.

Cheers!

thanks so much for giving me your time.
1. as per the medicals, I did it after I got a mail to go for medicals so the sheet containing my IME number was printed by me and I submitted it at the clinic. I only have the receipt.
2. documents submitted: study permit form (IMM 1294), family form (IMM 5645), document checklists, acceptance letter from UPEI, IELTS, O'level, degree certificate, NYSC certificate, university transcript, birth certificate, introduction letter, tuition deposit receipt, sponsor SOA of #9.2m and a letter from my sponsor, student questionnaire, international passport and my passport photographs.
thanks so much once again will be expecting your response soon.

No u can't use ur former medical result, except if it was an upfront medicals u did the last time and it was not attached to any ime. But if u had your medicals after medical mail, I'm afraid u may have to do another medical exam, because your old IME to which your result was linked will definitely be different from the new IME u'll be given in ur next app. However if you did your assessment at Consultant practice, they may charge u half of the medical exam fee (14k), and then transfer your old result on the former IME to the new IME, with that you won't do any test again, but just e-medicals.

About ur 2nd question, you need to know that "personal asset and financial status" is totally different from "insufficient funds". People don't understand that fact and hence miss them for each other, thereby tackling the wrong thing. "Insufficient funds" is given when the VO is not satisfied an applicant has enough funds (that is when the closing balance in the SOA submitted is low, or an applicant did not establish relationship with sponsor, or the sponsorship letter/claims is not convincing). In short, it deals with sponsor's finance.

But "personal asset and financial status" mostly does not come alone, comes with purpose of visit and some other nasty/upsetting/annoying reasons. It does not mean an applicant does not have enough finance for his/her study in Canada; that is why u see someone with 20m closing balance still getting refused on "personal asset and financial status" grounds......biko, na one billion VO wan see for hin acct?
So in short, "personal asset and financial status" simply means an applicant's financial standing. Most people that get this kind of reason are those that either claimed they have been working for some time in their application, or have an academic gap in their academic history, without showing proofs (in terms of good personal SOA, personal assets or anything that can show how and what they've been using their salaries for) that they have indeed been working and the job pays well. Or cannot explain what he/she has been actually doing (through a comprehensive Letter of Explanation), even if not in a regular employment, so as not to be perceived as an idle lazy man or woman who just wanna go to Canada in search of a greener pasture.

Please dont mind my long sermon, just sharing my opinion, and I hope it helps.

funny you, why will complain about long stories, am happy you gave me your time to explain in detail.thanks so much.
about the medicals, I did it at the CONSULTANTS PRACTICE so like you said, I might be charged have the price but will I wait till after the embassy requests for a medical or I can ask for my previous medical results now and use it as upfront medical (because of the new IME number).
secondly, is letter of introduction and letter of explanation the same? cos I only submitted letter of introduction.

1. You have to get in touch with ur clinic where u did the medicals, ask them for a proof that medicals was done. A. Proof is what you need to show CIC, even though it is the one used for previous rejected application. They could email it to you. The thing with this medicals centres is they are too busy and find it so hard to go dig up ur file as they are always attending to new people. Am not surprised sb said they put a charge of 14k to transfer ur result and to generate a new IME. This for me is should be a service they should render free as it doesn't cost them anything. So find out from the hospital.
2. What's ur employment history like from when you left school? Any gaps? Show employment letters, payslip, and personal SOA to show u have been working. Also a future employment letter could suffice which could help portray the fact that you are tied to your country. Add more to ur document as u re-apply.

U're welcome. No, wait until you get called for medicals. You can also include the receipt from ur first medical assessment (the one u got from consultant practice) and the medical form (the one you got from cic the last time) in your new application, perhaps it may fly, but I doubt it anyway.
Letter of introduction is of two types.
1. Letter of introduction from your employer to the embassy
2. Letter of introduction from embassy to Port of Entry

While letter of explanation is the one you write in support of your application to explain confusing or controversial issues in your application to the visa officer.

You are required to attach a prrof that medicals was done within the last 12 months. Your case is not 'upfront' medicals. You have done medicals, u just need to upload a proof to CIC on ur application. Even if it is from previous rejected app..So mind the language u use when u contact the hospital.U simply need a proof of medicals done period and not that u want to do upfront.CIC will locate ur file in their servers and tie it to your new application or anyhow they like it done.

Cheers!

It could have been transferred from ur sponsor or parents. Was it just 'personal assets' only that was ticked? What of 'purpose of visit'? Hello house, I just told the Prof, that i've submitted my application to the admission office and he sent this bolded below.. I dont need to hide anything from where I have gotten so much info from.. I was so naive when applying for US admission and Visa and I couldn't make my worries known to peepz and I died in silence.. But now, I need to share my worries with everyone here.. Anyways,Hope this is a positive message from him?

That’s great.

I have alerted the MSc (MELS) program office of your application so we can keep an eye on it and deal with any small problems should they arise.

The MELS Admissions committee will meet in February, and they will communicate with you (and also me) about whether you were successful in your application.

Best wishes

NB: He perused and edited my SOP, he even wrote that, He and I have discussed about possible research project. And he wrote some other sweet things which I really love on the SOP. He's also the Graduate Coordinator of the program

Thanks for your time gurus

Good day
Please gurus in the house, i need advice and guidance. I got conditional admission into Thompson Rivers University with the condition I pay my first semester tuition fee before they can send my final offer letter. I decided to go to any other good, reputable school cheaper than TRU because I can't tell for sure how financial status may be later on as i proceed with the program. I have Simon Fraser University on my least though they don't have exactly the program i want, but the most related one they have is ok for you. Please tell me what you think about Simon Fraser Uni, i will also appreciate if you could recommend a very reputable school with good record that have environmental science/management program with a tuition fee of not more than 6000CAD per annum. @Jlakeside I envy you ooo, this your supervisor is so "out of this world", if he could be this nice to a person he hasn't even met physically, one could be certain your partnership during your research work is gonna be a father-son experience! wishing you all the best bro smiley smiley
