Can My Pregnant Wife Continue The Intake Of Milo Beverages? by Nobody: 1:50pm On Jan 30, 2016
Good afternoon doctors in the house. My wife is four months pregnant now and before now she have been taking milo with peak milk but 2 days ago,her nurses at the ante natal told her she s hould stop taking milo and switch to lipton t ea.Today, she have started taking the yellow label lipton tea but I just discovered she have started vomitting. She vomitted the food she took this morning and moreso I think lipton tea could make her slim down and reduce in weight which I don't want.I have consulted google and I discovered some women took milo throughout their pregnancy period and nothing bad happened to them or the baby. And what I read about lipton tea that it can cause miscarriage if taken too much is not encouraging.please, can she switch back to milo and continue taking it everyday?thanks

Well, Pregnant women experience nausea so vomitting isn't predictably as a result of the food. As for the 'Milo' talk, Milo is a cocoa product and it contains caffeine, which can affect the baby's heart rate and development, the same way it affects us. It even affects the baby more because the baby isn't as developed as we are. Other reasons are what the effect on the mother can cause on the baby as well. The nurses surely had a point.
Note, I am not a doctor, but I was very attentive when my partner was in her term.

@DesChyko there is more caffeine in tea than hot chocolate

@adewunmi the nurses should have given you full advise and reasons and not half advise as this will allow you to make an informed decision.

They should have given you general advise on the advantage of the pregnant mum trying to keep a healthy weight and eat healthily.

They shouldn't have told you to completely cut out milo but should have only advised her to do things in moderation and only completely cut out foods which may be harmful to the baby such as raw fish (food poisoning) and liver etc

You may want to buy/borrow/read books on pregnancy as this will help you make informed decisions.

All the best.

I was quick to point this out to my partner and after inquiries, she let me understand that there are certain benefits that come with tea which Milo (and others) doesn't provide. She mentioned helping against morning sickness, containing some essential nutrients and labour-related benefits.

Tea containing essential nutrients?
I am happy to be corrected, but as far as I know there is no medicinal benefit in the common off the shelf tea that we buy
Herbal teas; maybe a tiny little bit of something
But general bog standard tea? . . .only contains caffeine.

can she take it everyday?because she doesn't like taking her drugs with just water because she complains the drugs are too many for her to take with ordinary water and beside she takes her drugs in the morning and night?
Re: Can My Pregnant Wife Continue The Intake Of Milo Beverages? by RiloKiley: 4:19pm On Jan 30, 2016
@adewunmi,
The reason the nurses told her to stop the Milo is probably because they don't want the baby to be too big to push out. Taking excessively sugary stuff during pregnancy is likely to make you have what they call a macrosomic(big) baby. And that could cause your wife to have a c/s instead of normal delivery.
However like someone else said, everything in moderation. Tea has more caffeine than cocoa/Milo, and apart from the fact that it might actually lead to an increase in your wife's blood pressure which would not be good for her or the baby, tea is more likely going to make your wife burn off more fat thus making the baby fine out thin and fugly. You won't like the look of the baby when it comes out. Stick with the Milo but in moderation.

@Adewumi the nurse was right to ask her to stop taking milo.

When my mum was pregnant nurses and doctors warned to stop taking milo because of the side effect but she refused.

During labour the baby was so big and fat to the extent that she couldn't push.

They had to rush her to the emergency room.

The doctor told her that it was her constant intake of milo that caused it.

Tell your wife to leave milo for now.

Yes she can in moderation, a cup of milo for breakfast won't hurt,

As long as she is not taking alcohol and drugs healthy foodstuff will be fine.

It depends on the drug she is taking. Milk and milk products inhibit iron absorption which might be one of the antenatal drugs your wife is taking. It also inhibits folic acid though not as much.

Let her learn to drink her drugs with plain water abeg. Or at worst she can use fruit juice to drink them. This will improve absorption and is better than taking milk. She can drink the Milo separately BUT IN MODERATION.

Pregnacare is another good drug if u can afford it. Its taken once a day and very convinient.

At four months I don't think your wife or the nurses should be worried about the weight of the baby yet. Let her enjoy her milk. She can start being cautious around six months when the baby will be essentially formed and just adding weight.

But there is no bitter drug here na, lol. Maybe Vit Bco.
Pregnacare might be more convenient instead of all these.

@ OP please do not allow your wife take PROCOLD. Let her stick to her routine drugs or pregnacare (#3000- #3500 here in Abuja) as the case may be and take only vitamin C for the catarrh.

As for taking Milo, it should be in moderation. Too much of everything is not good.

Pls if she has any health concerns she should talk to her doctor and if still in doubt double check with a matron ( when I was pregnant I always double checked with the matron and on some occasions she countered the doctor who then apologized. Matrons know a great deal especially if you meet experienced ones).

Congratulations & Good luck!
