I am not for APC buh iv embraced the reality of APC being incharge and diaz nothing we can do about it but to support its good policies and provisions. Interaging french in schools is a welccome development... Just being a good opposition grin

It is not a welcome development, this is another form of colonialism, why can't the French learn our own languages in their schools? Gosh, I hate being black, we are mentally inferior.

Go and learn your French, as for me, I choose English. Thank goodness, I am out of school, it's not my business.

French is well down the list and only spoken in backwater countries! (Like France!)
If a Nigerian politician is saying this it is only because of the "gifts" that he has been given!

It is either you work for Seun to attract traffic or you have a serious Psychotic disorder. I only hope the former is the case. Why must you shoot every reported Government initiative down?. To achieve what?
That table you pasted from God knows where is showing clearly "Native Speakers" .What about the colonies? Due to your incurable shoot it down syndrome you referred to France as a backwater country. This is laughable especially coming from a Nigerian!! lol.
Now get some education. France is a permanent member of the UN security council. About half of Africa speak french as official language. This includes all our immediate neighbors. French is one of the six official languages of the UN and you must speak 2 to hold any position. Finally, French is one of the four official languages of FIFA. of interest to football lovers.
If you still are not convinced why we should move in that direction, I will now believe that your case is definitely beyond redemption.

At least we have a strong history with the English so adopting their language is good in a multi lingual country like ours, but who are the French?

I support this move. I think Nigerian should be bilingual in the face of French neigbours. It will help in economic integration of the region. Added to French, Chinese and Arabic should also be taught in Public schools. Thses are the languages of the future.

Arabic is not the language of the future, it is the language of the mentally challenged.

you see? that list is very wrong...it joined malay plus indonesian which is tho similar but it is still different...bahasa melayu and bahasa indonesia are two different languages even though one descended from the latter...take for example it says there are more Malay speakers than Urdu? wtfffffffffff?? malay is spoken in Malaysia is like 30 million, Singapore (5 million), Brunei (not sure but similar to Singapore or less), few parts in Thailand (borders close to Malaysia)...Urdu is spoken in Pakistan which is around 200 million people, Urdu is spoken in some parts of India, Bangladeshi people speak Urdu too, some parts of Mauritius too...

it also said that Bengali is spoken more than Russian...wtfffffffffff Bengali is only spoken in bangladesh and some parts of India...Russian is spoken in Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and the rest former USSR....bro that list is effed up man

remember French is not only spoken in France yeah...francophone countries in africa too, Belgium, Switzerland, Monaco ,

Arabic is a beautiful language. The Arabs gave us the numerals(1,2, 3......... Etc ) as well as the concept of zero as a number. They named many stars in the heavens. And the invention of hospitals too!!
Every language is beautiful. But forcing another foreign language on us is not keeping with the administration's look-inward policy. Instead of forcing the French language on us, let the government enforce Nigerian languages, while doing everything to encourage the study and learning of French by incentives.

We never sabi correct English finish una wan add French to am. Misplaced priority

Actually very important. A large country like 9ja should be investing and controlling certain economic sectors in neighbouring countries instead of leaving it to France.

More Nigerians with technical, management PLUS linguistic skills will help. It will make our economy even bigger and increase regional economic influence.
At a personal level, I have found visiting Benin & CIV much more fun talking to locals in French.

It also opens a whole new vista.

For example, when I meet Francophone Africans in diaspora, speaking a common language quickly breaks down that barrier & suspicion that arose from different colonial brainwashing. grin cheesy

I understand you too but learning french is not the solution to the decay in our education system and in Nigeria as a whole...

Do countries like Cameroon, Benin and the rest teach English to their citizen.

It should be optional.

As a matter of fact. Cameroun is bilingual. They teach English and French in school.

I have friends from there and they confirmed it. And that's one reason I feel it's a good development for us.

You said something about foreign countries not learning our language and someone already gave you the right answer I suppose.

It is not only Nigeria, other countries are also learning other languages. It's always good to be bilingual.

Also, if you must know, some times last year a school in the UK started teaching it's students yoruba language.

It was posted here on NL aswel.

What a childish answer from someone proven wrong with silly nonsense postings.
The more that you open your mouth the more retarded you look!

Look at the list France is No 18 NOT number 1!

Your analogy is skewed.

'Native speakers' randomly translates to 'native population'.

Have you ever heard the term 'widely spoken'?

Have you considered who our neighbours are: Niger, Cameroun, Benin, Togo are all francophone?

Your list of 'lingua-population' is irrelevant in this context.

Lump China, India, Egypt, UAE, Sri Lanka, Qatar, Saudi, Singapore, Indonesia, Even Russia, and probably more than 60% of the world's population together, either grudgingly or not, subconsciously rendezvous at English as lingua franca .

The same goes for France and it's colonies to an extent (over 45 countries as the 'official language'); same goes for Spanish to an extent too.

Do you know even far away Vietnam that you quoted, French was at a time their official language?

It's about the spread; not concentration. It matters less if roughly a quarter of the world speaks Mandarin in 1-3 or 4 countries.

Well we are surrounded by FRANCOPHONE. Countries na ... Isn't it a good idea? And won't people (Nigerians) be gainfully employed as a result of this policy??

Besides in America Spanish is also heavily taught in most schools because USA is surrounded by Latino countries.

We are steadily realising our mistakes as a nation... Kudos to forward thinking cabinet

[s]Really? French more important than mandarin? how many top countries speck French aside France? Spanish is spoken by Latin american countries as well as a major language in the US.

The number of speakers is a strong indication of the importance of the language.

Even if you have not been privileged to travel wide, a little research could come handy.

French is the official language in over 45 countries/lands.

I guess if you were asked, what is the official language of Canada; you'd say English.

The data you provided is based on the population of speakers across the globe

In terms of importance and language to conduct business and political transactions, French is only second to the English language

It is a good development until you can provide a suitable argument against it

look at the brainless fool! even igbo is more important than french
