Packaged Dried Catfish Business. Is It Profitable? by DonUwaski(m): 10:21am On Jun 22, 2015
I found the contact of a young entrepreneur online that helps his mum sell packaged dried catfish. He is based in Ibadan and the packaging as well as the fish looks great.

He said it is smoke & sand free and can be shelved for up to 2 months without spoiling. It is also very affordable and seems like a very good business prospect if one can be supplying eatries, supermarkets and retail shops on a regular.

I have negotiated to be a distributor in my environment but I just wanted to find out if anyone here knows how profitable this can be and if there is good demand for this dried catfish.

Please all your comments will be appreciated. Thank you.

Yes honestly they actually are and I am looking forward to getting them to retailers. If I can build a client base of steady buyers then am sure this will be great. Am also looking at the possibilities of exporting them but I am just looking out for reliable buyers overseas.

I pray God opens way for us.

First thing you have to know that the success of this new idea depends on you.
Go out there, meet people, shops ,eateries, and food stuff outlets that you can sell your idea to.
See you might talk to 100 people and maybe just 5 people will respond. Those 5 people are enough to kick-start.
I wish you the best.

kindly confirm the shelf life of the product is 2 months before u invest your money. the major challenge of the business is the shelf life of the product which is caused by inadequate drying and improper sealing. Most supermarkets will want to confirm the shelf life first by requesting for samples. they fear the products can get spoilt on their shelves. the label should also carry a manufactured and expiry date. Also, a barcode is necessary. good luck.

Anything that can be consumed will be a profitable business to venture in. Do your feasibility studies and be more innovative packaging wise. .....

If really you can work hard enough to make it known, then work to make it gain acceptance. Let the price be affordable. At least for now till it becomes known and accepted.

But the branding is not enough in my opinion. You have to print small label with necessary information such as : natural smoken fish directly from the best river in Nigeria. Blabla like that. Then, your contact.

If you need one of such, I may help.

The demand is more or less high IMO, but you need to know the hot spots ( places that really demand for it), I would suggest restaurants, bukas, shop retail centers like shoprite and so on, also try and ensure your supplier is giving you good quality fish because if not another competitor will present something better and your consumer will shift fast.

This business has a lot of potentials.

Rather than aiming to be a distributor, Y not move Ur funds to Ibadan & try to be a shareholder

Changing it from a roadside business to a juristic company
