The above is a response to this thread:

Christian And Islamic Studies Merged By Ministry Of Education, Nigerians React

Nigeria for some time now has had a 'religion problem''. A clash of two differing worldviews. Since independence , and even before, there have been issues between Christians and Muslims, with periodic bursts of violence.I myself, having lived in the North for some time, have been witness to such clashes.

But the violence is not the only expression of such clashes. One clash has been in the area of religious education. For decades there have been complaints by one of the religions or the other about discrimination in the area of teaching CRS. As a Chrsitian, one of the many complaints CAN in the North in particular has had has been of Christian students being forced to learn IRS back in the 1970's....due to ''scarcity of Christian RS teachers.

That is why the issue in the above thread attracted my attention. I first thought that the Education Ministry had made a mistake, and my consprational part of my mind was worried by the fact that the Minsiter is a Muslim . But...when I examined the curriculum....this is what I found about the new Religious and National Values curriculum.

For students in Primary 1-6 and JS 1-3...this is how the Religious and NATIONAL values curriculum looks like...(under Explanatory Notes).

Listed components will serve as themes in the Religion and National Values Curriculum
Contents are planned for all children to take Social Studies, Civic Education and Security Education themes
Separate classes should be run for CRS theme and IS theme
Consumer Education, Disaster Risk Reduction Education and Peace and Conflict Resolution curricula are infused into the Civic Education, Social Studies and Security Education Themes.
Create enabling environment for the subject in all schools

And under the SS1-3....CRS and IRS would be taught separately as before.

In other words.....NO CAUSE FOR CONCERN.

In conclusion....I would like to say that I am deeply dissapointed with those who spread the rumor. If they had taken time to read the explanatory notes under the e-curriculum, they would have seen the full picture.

Let us not spread false rumors. For the sake of our Nigeria.

Were Christians asked to answer IRS questions and vice versa.

Additionally, this new subject has been in place for some time, yet no reports of Christian being taught IRS.

By the way, was anyone who was not Muslim taught IRS during the term passed?

I have a christian colleague here he was taught CRK by a Muslim (I mean conc muslin, the teblick with gegemu) at Sobi in Ilorin. The teacher professed that he studied CRK and Social studies at college of education.
Coincidentally, the same teacher is now lecturing this guy in masters class.

Who acknowledgement of religious differences don epp?

We need to look beyond our religion differences and embrace unity for peace to reign.

No one should /can force you to be a Muslim. It's a free world. But you can start by changing your name from Ridwan to Paul.

OP many cause for concern!
These children are in the formative years, and have the right to their parents religion. When they are mature, they can now poke their nose in to any other belief.
Besides, many schools lack enough classes, the separation won't work.
This is only applicable to people above 18. So, they should import Islamic teachers to all schools in the South aby?

I sincerely believed that religion is causing more harm than good in Nigeria. It is the major reason why we fight ourselves. Most Africa counties are in peace because they are not too religious despite the fact that they are made up of so many tribes like Nigeria. Just take a look at our neighbouring countries and see how they live in peace.

That's why you see so much denials everywhere. It's a weakness in this government, I must say

Note that the sylabus says separate classes for CRS and IS themes...which means probably that Christians would be taught CRS as part of the Religion and National Values curriculum and IS would e taught to Muslim students.

Note that this new curriculum has been around since 2014...when Wike was Minister of Education.

I doubt that anyone would be teaching strange religions to any student.

FACT: If Nigeria's constitution truely enshrines circularism, then all manners of religious issues should be exponged from all government activities across the board.
We are not being patriotic to the constitution by these double standards.
Again, both christian and muslim protagonists have conspired to deny traditional religious practictioners of their rights according to the constitution thus claiming God.
Are they not Nigerians with equal rights with everyone else even the aethists inclusive ?
I may not be a traditional religious supporter but no one has the right to deny them their rights.
Worst is the fact that most of the so-called self-professed "pious" christians and muslims are more fetish than the traditionalists they love to deny publicly because they patronize them anyway. Hypocrisy and double standard is killing the soul of this country.
All religions are recognized and controlled in the Rep. of Benin and the country enjoys relative peace.
Here we extol religion over and above patriotism, objectivity and transparency and peace continues to elude us.
The first enemy of Nigeria is religion closely followed by tribalism.

For the avoidance of doubt, am a born-again christian, not fetish, but God warned us not to judge anyone- Matt. 7 vs 1-2.
Judging people on the basis of religion is dangerous because you usurp Gods' prerogative of judgment.
