I say well done for the effort you put into that small beginning which i believe will be great
One of the concern you mention was pest infestation
Have you consider Polytunnel or irrigation system. The polytunnel will minimise the action of pest and other attacks on you tomatoes.
Also try to use organic pesticide even in uk here that where farmers are turning to now
You need to be aware of all these synthetic pesticide that has been banned in developed nations decades ago!

I am a UK based entrepreneur trained in Natural skincare product manufacture, Service engineer/ Product manufacture . i have been following the trends of Agriculture in Africa most especially Nigeria. The youth have now realise that agric is not only to plant and eat, but to plant, sell and make money in millions every month
This make me to talk about Agribusiness thats what the farmers in developed world- UK, Canada, US do
People can make millions in horticulture, with little land by making use of Irrigation system. You dont have to have loads of money before you start.
This is where i come in to guide people on hoe to start SME irrigation for vegetables. tomatoes, cucumber, chili etc
We supply modern farmer technology in the following areas
Irrigation accessories
Aquaponics/ HYDROPONICS
Organic fertilizer/ Supplement/ Pesticide etc
Biogas/ Biomas
Agricultural waste Recycling
Drones

Contact us if you want to purchase your Irrigation system accessories

i started a tomato farm today... its just day 6.. i transplanted to the farmland today.. pls i need to know if it requires me adding fertilizer and what is the name of the fertilizer and where to get it if required.. thanks... (08164047019)..

It depends on if your soil has the required nutrients. For a starter plant, it needs good nitrogen to grow and be sturdy, for adequate stem growth and foliage. But be careful with fertilizer especially nitrogen rich fertilizers so that it won't burn your palnt

Nice one op.

I am currently intercropping Roma tomatoes, and kale/cabbage in a 2acre free range snail farm at the moment in ABK.

The brassicas (cabbage and kale) would utilize the nitrogen in the soil for their leaf productions... Leaving the potassium for tomato fruit production.

More yields, less space.
I BELIEVE WE COULD SHARE IDEAS.

I'm curious how did your tomatoes fare? I've read NOT to plant tomatoes with any of the brassicas as they inhibit tomato growth.

Hehe.
Tomatoes that i have sold.

The tomatoes did good. The brassicas do not inhibit growth. They simply use away the nitrogen that would have gone into making leaves for the tomatoes (inhibiting growth in a sense) while leaving more phosphates in the soil which helps flowering and fruit setting.

This is "common sense" as most organic and inorganic ferts available in the Nigerian setting are rich in nitrogen...

Imagine tomato likes dodo while brassicas love beans.
So it's like i gave both of them beans and dodo in one plate because the food seller doesn't sell one without the other. Let them sort out their feed themselves.

This is necessary because if tomato is in a nitrogen rich medium, it will get too leafy and bushy with less fruit.

(to others people- abeg brass I as are simply cabbage and its family members)

I planted in sacks recently and here they are...

I did not set out to plant tomato at the beginning. My plan was to plant palm trees and plantain together. But got my fingers burnt through the supplier of the palm(story for another thread)

I got 6.5 acres my friend also joined me with 10 acres totalling 16.5 acres. With plan to plant tomato all year round.

We have started and will be sharing my experience here.

Well done, crystalf.
I salute your courage and determination.
I know how difficult it is for the youth from the southern states of Nigeria to take to farming, especially vegetables.
This is because of the usual peer pressure that interprets farming as only for the aged, the uneducated and the poor.
But, all these stereotypes are untrue. It is 'easy' money from oil that brought on that mindset. Beside, farming could be
lucrative if done with the benefit of knowledge.

I am a greenhouse vegetables producer in Jos
We produce beef tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, lebanese cucumbers, squashes, cabbages (chinese, english, etc.) sweet bell peppers (red, green, white, purple, yellow) and many other vegetables. We also produce herbs and spices like coriander, thyme, rosemary, etc.

So, my brother, do not give up!!!

I will be available to offer you free advice not only on growing but also in terms of storage, transportation and marketing

please can you share you ideas on storage e.g tomato and cucumber....thanks.

Hoop-Mulching and Advantages @ NATE FARMS ENT. NIG LTD an Agro/Livestock company in Nigeria Focused on changing the face of Agriculture in Nigeria/Africa Call us today for your Agriculture turn-key projects @+2348132478092 or email info@natefarms.com

Advantages

Increased soil temperature: At a 2 inch depth; 4 to 5°F under black mulch, or 8 to 10°F under clear mulch.
Reduced soil compaction: Soil under plastic mulch remains loose, friable and well-aerated. Roots have access to adequate oxygen and microbial activity is excellent.
Reduced fertilizer leaching: Water runs off the impervious mulch, resulting in maximum utilization of the fertilizer.
Reduced drowning of crops: Water is shed from the row area and excess water runs off the field thus reducing drowning and other excess soil water stresses.
Reduced evaporation: Soil water does not escape from under plastic mulch. Plant growth on mulch is often at least twice that on bare soil. The resulting larger plants will require more water, so mulching is NOT a substitute for irrigation.
Cleaner product: A mulched crop is cleaner and less subject to rots due to elimination of soil splashing on the plants or fruits. Note: Beds should be firm and tapered away from the row center. Plastic should be tight to promote run-off. There should be no puddles on the mulched beds!
Root pruning eliminated: Cultivation is not necessary except for the area between the mulched strips. Therefore, roots are not pruned.
Reduced weed problems: Black and IRT plastic mulch provides good weed control in the row. Clear plastic will require use of a herbicide, fumigation or lifting the mulch and cultivating. Often, weeds between mulch strips can be controlled by a herbicide.
Earlier crops: Black plastic mulch can result in 2 to 14 days earlier harvest while clear plastic can result in a 21-day earlier harvest.
Increased growth: Plastic mulch is practically impervious to carbon dioxide (CO2), a gas that is of prime importance in photosynthesis. Very high levels of CO2 build up under the plastic, because the film does not allow it to escape. It has to come through the holes made in the plastic for the plants and a "chimney effect" is created, resulting in localized concentrations of abundant CO2 for the actively growing leaves.
