This is the time for Airtel, MTN, and the other companies that sponsor beauty/musical contests to come to the aid of Nigerian athletes.
This is a shame and a reason why athletes long before now have been switching citizenship

So many thing is wrong with Nigeria as country. The funny part is that people still pretend like every is alright.
i dont know the country where u are writing from or where u are living, but just know it that Nigerians dont pretend that everything is alright.
Every ant in Nigeria knows that Nigeria got messed up BIG TIME the day they voted in APCheats to power.
Nigerians are crying but there is nothing much anyone can do until 2019...

Nigerians are suffering for the past one year.

if dem win medals, would they parade AIRTEL and MTN logo as their flag or would they parade Nigeria's flag? Abeg this is the governments responsibility.

That's why Nigerians are all over the world representing other countries : https://www.nairaland.com/1010873/nigerians-representing-other-countries-olympics

Once upon a time there was a Nigerian athlete who was getting $2000 monthly from her government, and she was expected to use that money to transport herself to meets and pay her coaches.

Now said Nigerian athlete was based in a European country where her mates were getting $24000 monthly from their government and had free coach plus two physios to book.

Of course, Nigerian athlete changed citizenship.

And we also had a male athlete who changed citizenship one year....and the next turned up at the National Stadium at Surulere with a cool 4WD.(Which he could not afford when he was a Nigerian. And he eventually won a Olympic silver medal).

I am not defending Buhari. But these two tales happened long before PMB or even GEJ took over. Poor funding of track and field athletics did not start yesterday. Add the fact that most of our sport associations are run poorly (and often by the same old corrupt bureaucrats).

You expect PMB to find money for these athletes? When GEJ could not find money for them with high oil price?

The problem is that in Nigeria....athletics needs money. Lots of it. And I doubt AFN would be giving any athlete 20000USD a month in a country where people are lucky to see 400 USD monthly.

Anyway.....private sponsorship is the way froward. Govt does not have the cash.

Spot on.

The associations are very inefficient and headed by very corrupt officials who would rather travel allover the world without lifting a finger to improve their respective sports. The IOC provides special grants for athletes but the money is cut from the top. For example, Galadima is a top shot in international volleyball but when last was a volleyball tournament held in Nigeria?

Marketing depts are non existent and the few private individuals who try to do their own bit are skimmed out of things at the National level. Take Wale Edun for example. He has been running a successful amateur boxing program every last saturday of the month in Lagos since 2009. Every month. Spends nothing less than a million every month (he uses his connections to get sponsors) and also hosts the Governors Belt every december since 2009 but yet the national body cannot invite him to chair the association. Next thing they will be begging up and down when it comes to attending events. The current stars of professional boxing in Nigeria started out with the Monthly Saturday Boxing Show. The Fijabis and Otto Joseph collecting millions as prize money are some of the program's products.

While I support Buhari wholeheartedly, I believe he made a mistake making Dalong minister of sports, that guy is plain clueless when it comes to sports administration. Waidi Oshodi would have made a very good sport minister. As commissioner, Eko 2013 is regarded as the best national festival in recent times. Hell, we have not had any since then. As the president of Nigeria Table Tennis Association (NTTF)
you should see the wonders he is performing there.

If I start to dey air my grievances with sports. We no go sleep today.

I don't believe that they were told to pay their way to Rio.
The NOC should organize a fund raising dinner for them.
Seun, Linda Ikeji, Orikinla, Bella Naija and others can also raise funds for them.

This country has been thrown to the dogs, infact, right now, we are worse than a banana republic!! How the hell did we get here? First was the Belgian coach rejecting us like we are some sort of disease, now our athletes are begging for money to finance themselves so they could represent us at the olympics!!! Even small & poor countries like Ghana, Senegal, Cameroun etc are sending their contingent in chartered flights! This !diots in high places are citing lack of money as excuse but they keep recieving their salaries & allowances once due. They keep sending their kids to the best schools all over the globe. They keep embezzling our money and buying properties across the globe. Who will still argue that Nigeria is not a zoo Why do I have to carry the green passport and answer a Nigerian with all these shame and embarrasment?? If I have access to a nuclear warhead, I'll simply nuke Aso Rock & the three arms zone!! **spits on Buhari**
