How many buyers can pay for a clean title, low mileage non accident car? For instance Toyota Camry 1997/1998/1999 aka tiny light for 1.3M, Toyota Camry 2000/2001 aka droplight/envelope for 1.5m, Toyota Corolla 2003/4/5 for 2M, Toyota Camry 2007/8 aka muscle for 3.2M etc
MOST NIGERIAN CAR BUYERS WANT GOOD CARS BUT THEY ARENT READY TO PAY GOOD MONEY. QUALITY PRODUCTS ARE NOT CHEAP
THEY WANT NON ACCIDENT LOW MILEAGE FIRST BODY AT CHEAPER RATE LOLS. DEALERS WILL CONTINUE TO SELL ACCIDENT CARS
Dont mind them. Instead of stoning the corrupt politicians looting away their opportunities from all parties they would be playing tribal politics. While Nigerians are struggling to buy second hand rickety cars their representatives in the senate insist on buying #36m SUV each not with their monies but commonwealth. Suffering, smiling and doing thanksgiving in church for buying second hand cars. Nigerians are morons!!!

What's the average mileag for foreign used car that you would wanna recommend?

Hello Harmbhrosz,

It depends on many factors which include budget and age of the car you are buying. Mileage below 100,000 miles is very reasonable but above 150,000 miles may not be a good idea.

This is a very important post. I almost fell for the antics until I got my money back with 'agidi'. The said car was sold 2 years before to a man in Ondo State and was brought to Lagos State. A friend of mine told me not to buy the car but I went ahead to pay half of the money behind him until he saw it and showed me all the patches and works done to it. Anyway, I have learnt my lesson from that day..

OP ...how can I find out the VIN on my own. Does it required any registration with auto sites. Need an insight into this. Once bitten twice shy my brother.

You may not need to do a physical inspection when you know the exact things to look out for. When in doubt, you can employ the service of a professional vehicle inspector for 90 dollars although I have used this service only once because of the year and cost of the car to be purchased.

The benefit of doing a VIN check in Nigeria before you purchase a car can never be overestimated. It will help save your hard earned money and most importantly your time amongst others. I have always known that some of us would do anything to sell our cars. However, the extent of this malicious act has grown from unreasonable to unfathomable.

You won’t believe what my eyes have seen as I am currently trying to get a 2007-2010 Camry for a client. The issues vary from flooded cars, rolled back mileage and extreme accidents to jalopy cars that look picture-perfect online. The car that drove me to the brink was a 2009 tokunbo Camry on OLX for N2m which looked good enough coupled with the usual hype from the seller.

Nevertheless, something seemed amiss because the price was too good. As usual, I requested for the car’s VIN to determine its history before going for a physical inspection. The disastrous history report revealed it was sold as scrap/destroyed car in USA and shipped to Nigeria 4 years ago, but the seller misrepresented this car to be a clean tokunbo, despite the fact that it has been registered and used in Nigeria for 3 years.

These same reasons compelled me to start importing all my client’s cars from the USA and Canada in 2011, it has been cheaper and less stressful as the entire process from purchase to delivery is usually done from the comfort of my home. Fast forward to 2016, looking inward has become inevitable due to the sky-high dollar exchange rate. Therefore, clients with constrained budget have to settle for tokunbo cars while some prefer the Nigerian used cars.

Finally, when a deal seems too good to be true, then you need to be more careful e.g when the price is too fanimorous, the low mileage is not commensurate to the age of the car (e.g a 2001 model regular car will hardly have a mileage of 75,000 miles), when the seller wants you to take the car after paying 60% deposit while the balance will be spread over 3-6 months (in this case, the car is probably a Nigeria used car presented as tokunbo and it’s not worth more than your initial deposit so the balance you’ll be paying is extra profit to the seller) etc.

Let’s all make Nigeria great again.

VIN number is only as good as what was reported to insurance companies or DMV. But it is better than nothing in some cases. Also you need to know that the term "salvage" as used by insurance companies is a mere technical jargon.

I rely on 2 things: OBD II scanner and my eyes.
OBD II for internal problems. Eyes for external issues (if you know exactly what to look for). In Nigeria, some people take their mechanics. Sorry to say, a lot of mechanics do not even know how to inspect a vehicle.

It's good to run a vin check before buying a car,so long as your budget is good. If you're the type always looking for cheap cars, you've got no biz with vin cos you obviously won't be able to afford it. Good cars don't come cheap.

AutoJoshNG nice one. Anyway a good car is a good car regardless of the 'name the whites' tag it.
I deal on cars and the first day I tried to verify a flooded or accident free vehicle, it cost me about 7 dollars which is not cheap comparing exchange rates. When buying a car, there are some major stuffs you look out for especially body and chassis wise. Others are secondary.
Bros I bought a Camry 2011 XLE 3m at 2013 When the dealer checked the vin, oyibo say Na faulty airbag. But it was branded as scrap.
I had to call 4 mechanics to check for accidents but none but till now my client is still flexing his car. In other words a good car is a good car

You may not be able to decode the VIN
As it may be pointless

But you can get detailed info about a VIN (the vehicle it self)

If thieves vandalize the inside electronics of a vehicle, the insurance company will tag it "salvage" because it meets a certain criteria and they don't want to get involved in the murky water of trying to fix it. That means, salvage doesn't mean that a vehicle was involved in a collision. The key thing is to find out what kind of salvage the buyer is dealing with.

[quote author=ironheart post=47937605] its not about recommendation, its about yiu taking time to check the vin number online before making up your mind to either put up with buying the scrap or not[/quotequote]

Many thanks, but how do we get going online to unravel this mystery?
Is there a known website to verify from or what steps to embark on to actually determine the truth life history of the said car/vehicle?

There is a database where vehicle information are kept and updated as soon as anything about the car changes e.g transfer of ownership, accident, theft, repossession etc. The VIN is used to store all that information and we also use the VIN to retrieve the same information which tells us the history of the car.
