ogunvic41:Dont mind them. Instead of stoning the corrupt politicians looting away their opportunities from all parties they would be playing tribal politics. While Nigerians are struggling to buy second hand rickety cars their representatives in the senate insist on buying #36m SUV each not with their monies but commonwealth. Suffering, smiling and doing thanksgiving in church for buying second hand cars. Nigerians are morons!!! 9 Likes |

harmbhrosz: Hello Harmbhrosz, It depends on many factors which include budget and age of the car you are buying. Mileage below 100,000 miles is very reasonable but above 150,000 miles may not be a good idea. 1 Like |

Babateemd: You may not need to do a physical inspection when you know the exact things to look out for. When in doubt, you can employ the service of a professional vehicle inspector for 90 dollars although I have used this service only once because of the year and cost of the car to be purchased. |

AutoJoshNG:/ VIN number is only as good as what was reported to insurance companies or DMV. But it is better than nothing in some cases. Also you need to know that the term "salvage" as used by insurance companies is a mere technical jargon. I rely on 2 things: OBD II scanner and my eyes. OBD II for internal problems. Eyes for external issues (if you know exactly what to look for). In Nigeria, some people take their mechanics. Sorry to say, a lot of mechanics do not even know how to inspect a vehicle. \ 6 Likes |

It's good to run a vin check before buying a car,so long as your budget is good. If you're the type always looking for cheap cars, you've got no biz with vin cos you obviously won't be able to afford it. Good cars don't come cheap. 3 Likes |

AutoJoshNG nice one. Anyway a good car is a good car regardless of the 'name the whites' tag it. I deal on cars and the first day I tried to verify a flooded or accident free vehicle, it cost me about 7 dollars which is not cheap comparing exchange rates. When buying a car, there are some major stuffs you look out for especially body and chassis wise. Others are secondary. Bros I bought a Camry 2011 XLE 3m at 2013 When the dealer checked the vin, oyibo say Na faulty airbag. But it was branded as scrap. I had to call 4 mechanics to check for accidents but none but till now my client is still flexing his car. In other words a good car is a good car 2 Likes |

InvertedHammer: Brother you are so on point. My eyes is even better than obd to an extent. I don believe oyibo insurance English. My friend bought a salvage jeep commanda as oyibo write am for 1.5m including transport from us, draining of oil, blah. Can you believe it's flooded(snow) and didn't start still he bought and sold it for 3.5m |

gohzieh:/ If thieves vandalize the inside electronics of a vehicle, the insurance company will tag it "salvage" because it meets a certain criteria and they don't want to get involved in the murky water of trying to fix it. That means, salvage doesn't mean that a vehicle was involved in a collision. The key thing is to find out what kind of salvage the buyer is dealing with. \ 3 Likes |

[quote author=ironheart post=47937605] its not about recommendation, its about yiu taking time to check the vin number online before making up your mind to either put up with buying the scrap or not[/quotequote] Many thanks, but how do we get going online to unravel this mystery? Is there a known website to verify from or what steps to embark on to actually determine the truth life history of the said car/vehicle? 1 Like |
Re: VIN Check: 1 Step You Must Never Skip Before You Buy A Car In Nigeria by AutoJoshNG: 8:48pm On Jul 27, 2016 |
kgr8mike: There is a database where vehicle information are kept and updated as soon as anything about the car changes e.g transfer of ownership, accident, theft, repossession etc. The VIN is used to store all that information and we also use the VIN to retrieve the same information which tells us the history of the car. |
