Looking for labour was stressful.i left my house early today and could not find aboki which is the norm in my area. But finally I met 2 young men, one was not even ready, after negotiation,i was disappointed.later on I found a nursing mother, who brought her husband and with them we kick started my adventure.i was so happy when I saw that my dreams for the past three months has just began. On Monday I will do live farming here.

Wow! I had a great time.I'm tired because I was personally involved.
This morning ,I resumed as planned, after prayers. I met my labourers already working and we completed the tilling and planting of my cucumber seeds today.
Later in the night I will be posting what I learnt personally and what I will do next time.
Re: My Cucumber Farming Adventure(my First Experience As A Farmer) by cybergee(m): 10:22pm On Aug 08, 2016
Things learnt so far.
1.Getting the right labour is tedious; I discovered that it is cheaper to use novice than experience.
If you know the job ,just get people that are new to cucumber farming but are farmers and tell them what u want and you will reduce your cost.
I personally met with some experience cucumber labour workers and the charged me 25k after negotiation per plot but using the other reduced my cost.the did not only till the farm and prepare the bed,the also helped me to plant my seedling.

You need to start keeping ur cost under check frm the onset. 25k may be outrageous for clearing nd bed on a plot (Where is ur location). Secondly, I hope u av a reliable wetting program. Best of luck bro

Manual labor is a major issue almost everywhere apart from the North where we have army of Almajiris. Only alternative is to use basic garden tools that costs money and not readily available in Naija. For example, a small walking tractor will make complete your bed within an hour.

From my enquiry on nairaland, Cost is from =N=480k to =N=900k. You may go for a power tiller that goes for ard =N=150k to =N=250k depending on the Horse power, that should handle your requirements if your farm is still within an hectare

Thanks Willie,i will the power tractor. I just discovered my spacing was not adequate. I went to ministry of agriculture yesterday for enquiries and was fortunate to meet a cucumber farmer that explained to me that I must stake because of my spacing.
