Do you remember when futuristic movies would show a future full of robots? Well, that future isn’t so far away. The robots are coming, and they will take our jobs. The technological revolution we are in is not stopping anytime soon, and automation is a huge part of its growth. We have witnessed this change before, and that was the Industrial Revolution. The solution was creating a more educated workforce to handle more complex issues, and again our solution to this issue lies in education. When choosing a college degree, it is important to be cognizant of the changing world and its changing demands. And so, I have found 5 college degrees that will be sure to be obsolete with the advent of technology.

Accounting Degree

Basically, if Quickbooks can do it – you don’t really need your accountant. More and more companies are coming up with ways to do taxes online – from Turbo Tax to H & R Block. In house accounting is only truly necessary for larger companies, and tax accounting for most individuals can be done online directly. The changing course of this career requires less number crunching and more insight. A good alternative to this degree is finance, where you can be more dynamic in your career.

Hospitality and Tourism Degree

You know those kiosks that you check in to at the airport? That is the projected future of hotels. Majoring in hospitality and tourism is a mistake, because most of that industry can easily be replaced by technology. The need for hotel desk agents, travel agents, and more are truly dwindling.

Paralegal Degree

Most of the duties of a paralegal can easily be done by a computer these days. Filing and research can easily be done online, and does not require a human touch. Law itself can be replaced by technology, so paralegal studies is the obvious first cut to the industry.

Broadcast Communications Degree

Broadcast is an ever changing field. The TV is no longer the main news outlet, and a degree in broadcast communications focuses on an outdated technology. Communication efforts are changing daily, from Snapchat to Facebook – we get our news in a very different way these days.

Pharmacy Degree

Your prescription can be filled by a robot. That is a simple idea to grasp. More and more drugstores are turning to this idea of an automatic pick up or drop off, and there is no real need for a pharmacist in this world. Compounding is still relatively used, but as big pharmaceuticals dominate the playing field – the need for compounding will dwindle as well. Go big and become a doctor instead, as this job is very replaceable.

I doubt this. No profession/ career can go into extinction. Rather, technology will boost their performances and probably open doors for new careers.

But, honestly, I can't say wat would become of the world in the nearest future. Technology is really changing the world.

You are so wrong about mechanical engineering. if u think its about repairs of generators or only automobiles, it shows how shallow minded u view the profession.

engineering profession can never go into extinction. the attached picture below explains it better

Accounting can never be extinct because accountants do more than book keeping and preparing tax returns. Wonder why some of the big companies are Accounting firms? Accountants are very important in every business regardless of quickbooks etc.

Pharmacy as well cannot go out of existence because they do more than just hand out drugs in pharmacies or hospitals. There are several branches of pharmacy with that being just one of it.

Don't mind the dude if only he knows some courses mechanical engineers do n where they can work. mechanical engineers can effectively man managerial positions. they r trained to manage man, MATERIAL and RESOURCES.
they can even work in hospitals. biomedical engineering is branch of mechani engineering. they design syri/nges, heart pacers., artificial implants, prothestics devices etc. in fact they use the concept of anthropometry to design devices that will be comfortable to the end users.
mechanical engineers r also involved in building services. plumbing, design of lifts, design of building powerplants, material testing, cooling load estimate, air-conditioning etc. provided a motion producing machine is used in any field of endeavor, mechanical engineers can work there. I can go on and on. I hope this little will awaken his shallow mind to the wide areas mechanical engineers function. Even the robots the OP is talking about is a product of engineeing. because Nigeria does not appreciate engineer does not mean it will go extinct. My ignorant fellow go and spread the word

I can't agree with you more. That has been the thinking of an average illiterate and those illiterate literate around us. I guess because the descipine name is synonymous to the local mechanic, that's why most people like that fellows see it that way.

Mechanical engineering is so vast that, even after your first degree, u have vast area to do your post graduate studies. Material science and testing in standard industry is enough to start a career.

Production and manufacturing, maintenance, design, power and energy, manager of man, machine and resources, research in industry etc. The list can go on and on.

Don't mind the fella, you cannot see beyond your horizon.

Of course it can. But who do you think is gonna design operate, maintain and program such software for the computer. It still boils down to the mechanical engineers

I tell you another one, do you think humans are the one assembling cars we use today? Of course not. Various assembly are done by robots in car factories operated and controllee by the engineers.
Any advancement in computer aided design is not completed in engineering without the engineers.

You are still missing the point, the machine, robot, computer or whatever you call it will not be available in the first place without the engineers.
And technology keep upgrading all the time.

Imagine if the discipline is now in extinction, that means factories and coys are now using the existing robots to carry out their various activities. This will lead to the shutting down of research and creative workshops that are coming up with new and improved initiatives to solve those problem. Immediately that happens, nobody will be interested in the discipline. But where the big danger lies is when the existing technology fail to meet the demands of the evolving world.

This is why Africa is so obsolete when it comes to technology because we abandoned our creative art work, didn't improve on them and the white men did otherwise and the result is what we see around us.

All these ppl spewing trash on a common fact are just showing how backward they are in tech advancement. Wen I say some courses will go extinction, I never mean they can't be studied at all in the colleges or universities. It means their relevance may not be as it is today.

Visit advanced countries and you'll understand what I'm talking about. Some firms b4 now may need the services of about 10 Accountants, now they only need about 3 cos there are applications that can do that job.

Cyber cafe used to be a lucrative biz, it has gone into extinction and someone also countered that fact. How many ppl will invest in that biz in an urban areas?

For mechanical engineering, have u seen these high tech cars, they show on the screen when they have any fault and where the fault is, soon it'll get to a level the solution to any fault will be displayed on the screen and it'll become do-it-yourself and the relevance of these engineers will dwindle. Only those that have the opportunity and brain to read this course into becoming a high tech engineers will be relevant. How many people have this opportunity?

Op, do you know what "AI" is? I bet you do not. Virtually all the courses will go into extinction when this "Artificial Intelligence" is finally let loose.

A country has an "AI"lawyer. All databases have been installed in it, so you can handly beat this one in the law court when they've fully set it up.

Can the robot do health counselling or do you think Pharmacy is all about dispensing??. it's pharmacist dat are involved in design drug and research. can robot lecture. Pharmacy is so diversified beyond ur own imagination. Robot can never replace Pharmacy. To novice like it's all about dispensing, but to the professional it's more than that.
