King of Kings
september, 2016.
Ibadan.
Davidflo.

It was the night before Chief Nicholas would announce the boy he was going to take to the big city with him. Nothing in the way his grandfather sipped the liquid in his cup of gin showed that he was as anxious as he was. Luke couldn’t sleep, the lantern’s orange haze and the smell of kerosene filtered through the one room apartment he shared with the man he called grandpa but others called Sir Joe.
Sir Joe was a wrinkled old man with half his dentition intact. He had a slim built but slightly protruding belly. He had the kind of skin that had been lighter in its earlier days, but now was tanned, not by the sun but by age. Sir Joe was also a chain-smoker and heavy drinker.
Luke loved Sir Joe.
Since when Luke could remember, Sir Joe was the only family he knew. He had told him how his father had died a few weeks after his mother died giving birth to him. A preventable tragedy Sir Joe would always remind him. Lack of money made buying blood impossible for the woman who had complications during delivery. Luke didn’t hold any brief for his poor late parents, he didn’t know them. He knew Sir Joe who had been a carpenter in his early days, a gifted one as people always said but spent most of his money on cigarettes and drinks. They didn’t know he smoked Indian hemp. That was a secret between Luke and Sir Joe. Sir Joe claimed the hemp was to ease the pain he felt from the arthritis he was suffering from.
The room they both occupied consisted of a battered mattress, a wooden chair and table, some buckets and a few very old pots and plates. They cooked with firewood and stones; they took their bath in under the moonlight at the backyard. They flung their nylon wrapped faeces into the bush about 50 miles from their house.
The apartment was among a group of apartments in a compound they referred to as Yard. Luke could hear the voices of the occupants in the next room to theirs. It belonged to Baba Junior. Baba Junior was equally as wretched as Sir Joe, but he had a bicycle never failed to remind the ‘bicycleless’ neighbors of his. His wife, Mama Junior probably had the biggest breast in the village. She was a constant church goer and her prayers usually sounded louder than her moaning whenever Baba Junior ploughed into her. Luke was sure nobody heard of their lovemaking except him because he had very good ears.
“You are going to be a very great man, Luke”, the old man said to Luke as he drained what was left of the schnapps.
Luke didn’t answer. Sir Joe always believed himself to be a prophet whenever the alcohol took over.
“You really don’t need Nicholas to become great. Who even knows the source of the man’s wealth?”
Luke closed his eyes. Chief Nicholas was known as the richest man in the village, his father was the last king before he died and his elder brother took the throne. He moved with politicians in the big city, his house was the biggest in the village and it was rumored that the one in the city was even bigger. He was into intercity transport with more than 150 Luxurious buses. He also had hotels in almost every major city in Nigeria. Luke couldn’t even be bothered by Sir Joe’s insinuations.
What he wanted more than anything in the world was to be chosen by Chief Nicholas. Anybody who followed Chief Nicholas to the city became very rich after some years. More than anything in the world he wanted to be rich. He often wondered what would become of Sir Joe if he is chosen, but he figured out it would mean one less mouth to be fed.
About 3 Years ago, Sir Nicholas announced that he would like to empower youths from the village. So periodically, he would come around and take whoever the council of elders saw as hardworking, loyal and responsible. Someone who could someday, give back to the village too. His name had been whispered around the village as a likely benefactor. They talked about how at his young age, his yam, cocoyam and cassava farm was expanding. Though all the money made from it went to the man that put a roof over his head and actually owned the plot of land, Sir Joe. His Academics was also very good. His WAEC result was excellent, he had a photographic memory. The only snag on his wheel was a boy that always beat him to everything. A boy he wanted to be friends with but never really liked him though their names were similar. He was the most popular boy in the village. His looks, charm and charisma was above every other. He was also very intelligent.
His name was Lucas.

She knelt down in front of him. Besides the earrings dangling beside her cute head, she was as naked as God had created her. Her breasts were perfect, the only looked bigger than her chest because she had very tinny waist. Her right hand massaged the hardening mass underneath his shorts, while the index finger of her left hand robbed against her clits. For the umpteenth time she tried to pull down his zipper but he stopped her. He wanted her to be desperate; he wanted her to want him more than she wanted anybody in the world. Her father was the pastor of the biggest church in the village. He usually boasted about the purity of his daughters from the pulpit and how he expected the young girls in the village to act like them. He had two daughters; the first one was 23 years of age, very beautiful and was the first person to show Lucas how to wear a condom. The second one finally succeeded in pulling down his zipper.
She teased the base of the cap of his penis with her tongue, allowing him grow bigger and fill her mouth, then she closed her mouth around It. Sound of crickets from the bushes surrounding them didn’t mask the soft moan he made when she started sucking him, he looked up at the moon as waves of sensation filled him up.
He stopped her head from moving and told her to get on her feet.
“Don’t come inside me today please, I am not safe”, she pleaded as she placed her hand on the bark of a tree, facing it and shot her waist backwards.
He entered her.
As the strolled towards his house with the smell of wet grass on their skin, she stopped walking and looked into his eyes.
“Lucas, Promise me you won’t forget me if you are chosen tomorrow?”
“You give the best head, I won’t forget that”, he replied smiling.
“Be serious jor”
“I won’t forget you, Favor”
She giggled happily.
“Promise me you will come back and marry me”
“How old are you again?” he asked.
“I am 18,”
“How are you sure I am the one you would want in a year’s time?”
“Lucas, I know you are the one. Remember you told me I was the one too?”
“But that was before we started fucking”
She was shocked. She looked harder to see if he was joking.
“You are telling me this after I gave myself to you?”
This was what he hated most about girls. They acted like the enjoyment wasn’t mutual.
“I gave myself to you too, you know?”
“Did you even ever love me or it was just the sex?” she asked again as they continued the stroll to his house.
“No, but I really like you”
Tears started streaming down her face. Her world was collapsing in front of her. She had dreams, beautiful dreams of spending the rest of her life with him.
“You will rot in hell, Lucas”
He looked at her and smiled. He didn’t believe in spiritual heaven and hell. He wasn’t a superstitious person. But he knew this village was hell and the City was heaven. He was sure of going with Chief Nicholas to heaven while Favor will remain in hell with the rest of the villagers.
“How can you curse with a mouth stained with cum?”
She changed her walking direction to her house, where her father the pastor, was waiting for her.

The town hall was filled to the brim. Food and drinks were in surplus, they were in different variety. People that wondered when they would come across the kind of meal again stashed some in their polythene bags. It was not unusual to see a person with three different plates in front. Children drank soft drinks till their stomach ached. Grown men started constituting nuisance after one too many bottles.
Chief Nicholas sat beside his brother who was the king. Also beside him was his beautiful wife who was from Togo. She spoke with a French accent. The king’s wife was also seated with them. She was beautiful but heavy bleaching had taken its toll on her face. Some local artist performed songs to entertain the people. It was a joyous day.
Most of the young men between the ages of 17 and 22 weren’t drinking with the crowd though; they knew that very soon they would know their fate.
Lucas sat at the middle of the hall with his mother. She was a single parent. The man who impregnated her decided not to marry her after all. Lucas got his looks from her. She was very fine, with a smooth skin like that of the ladies in magazines. She wanted Lucas to go with Chief Nicholas. She could take care of herself. She made a conscious decision not to remarry after she gave birth to her son. After all, what was the purpose of marrying if not to have children? She knew her son Lucas would be great and take her from the village to the city very soon. Chief Nicholas was the answer. Though she had slept with Mr. James with the bad body Odor, she had no regrets because he was among those who would choose. He had promised to help her convince his peers that Lucas was the right choice. She hadn’t expected him to last as long as he did on top of her for his age. His stamina was also commendable. She had promised an encore if her son was chosen.
With a wave of hand, the king signaled for silence in the hall. People scrambled to their seat. Almost everybody had someone they were rooting for. Even Sir Joe, who didn’t like Chief Nicholas, wanted Luke to have it. He knew that was what Luke wanted the most in his life.
Luke didn’t sleep the previous night. He kept imagining himself on the way to the city with Nicholas. Chief Nicholas’s son sat in front with a few of the rich men in the village. His name was Daniel and he rode a sports car. His twin sister never came to the village, her name was Daniela.
“ My Good people of Ayedade, it is time for us to round of this wonderful occasion by announcing who would b going with my brother to the City”, The king said.
Lucas shot a quick look at Luke who was soaked with sweat.
“It was not an easy choice, so we see all of you here as worthy ambassadors. Unfortunately, only one of you can be chosen,” he continued.
Luke’s heart was looking for ways to pound its way out of his chest.
“Whoever is chosen must know this is an investment that must be paid back to the village. He must be hardworking, focused and upright. The journey for the rest of his life begins tomorrow, so I hoped he has packed his bags,” he added with a chuckle.
Luke closed his eyes; he knew the pronouncement was eminent. Lucas held is mother, as she shivered to his touch.
“The council of Elders, being led by Sir Thomas is ready to make the announcement,”
Sir Thomas walked slowly to the front of the hall; he was a very old man whose walking stick was one of a king in the village. Lucas’s mother had thought of fucking him too but she didn’t want to commit murder.
“We the council of elders have made our choice. Let me add that it was done the right way with openness and love all around,” he started.
“Well, I definitely opened my legs”, Lucas’s mum said to herself.
He coughed for about 10 seconds before he continued.
“The young man chosen by the council is lucas Ayeni”

Welcome back, Sir Davidflo.
Re: King Of Kings. by davidflo(m): 9:15pm On Sep 10, 2016
Luke walked out of the hall immediately the ceremony was over. The only image in his mind as he approached the stream was Lucas been carried high in the hall. People rushed to hug him and let him know he was their choice. He went to meet him to say his congratulations but Lucas ignored him. That didn’t hurt him, he had expected it.
He immersed himself into the stinging cold stream. Tears from his eyes became one with the water that enveloped him. He didn’t swim; he just allowed the stream to take him.
************************************************************************************

Lucas was taken to the residence of Chief Nicholas, where he was briefed on the itinerary of the next day. The last time he entered the premises was when it was being built. He was amazed by the luxury. The ceiling was high; he could smell the richness of the leather clothing the chairs. The night was cold but the AC made the house even colder. A very fat man that he realized was Chief Nicholas’s butler came to inform him that the chief was ready to meet him upstairs.
The Chief had a muscular build with square jaw; he was in his 60s but already had thick grey hair. With him was Daniel, his son.
“Lucas, how are you?”
“Fine sir”, he replied.
“Since we will be travelling first thing tomorrow morning, I wouldn’t want to keep you up for long”,
“Ok sir”
“You should be here by 7:00am. Take this money and give your mother”, he said, extending a brown envelope to him.
Lucas prostrated in thanksgiving.
“Daniel will see you off to the door, good night!”
*************************************************************************************
It was some minutes past 9pm, when Luke entered the room he shared with Sir Joe. On the table was a bowl of goat meat pepper soup and a cup of palm wine.
“Where have you been?” a worried Sir Joe asked.
“I went for a swim, sir”
“In the night, are you planning to swim to the city?” he said laughing.
Luke didn’t find the joke funny.
“Anyways, I got you a plate of pepper soup and the freshest palm wine ever “,
“I am not hungry, Sir”
He pulled of his damp clothes and lay still, replaying everything that had happened that day. The sound of Sir Joe singing an ancient song thanking the gods for calamities that only last for the the night but bring joy in the morning sent him to sleep.
************************************************************************************
Lucas was so excited he couldn’t walk home, instead he ran. He had told his mum he would be spending some time with his friends but instead he changed his mind after meeting the chief. He decided to spend all the time he had left in the village with his mum.
On getting to the front of the door, he was stopped by the sound he was all too familiar with. He waited outside until the grunting of the man who was savagely having sex with his mum stopped. He overhead the man telling her how sweet she was and how he was sure Lucas would become a big Lagos boy. As the man approached the door, Lucas stepped into the darkness provided by a tree adjacent to the house.
He knew Mr. James very well and almost puked when he realized that was the man that just slept with his mum. He quickly understood what the sex was about. In as much as it was done to make his dream come through, he couldn’t quench the rage he felt inside, imagining the man’s dirty hands all over his mum. He wondered if it would continue after he goes to the city.
He followed the clearly satisfied man as he staggered happily through a bush path leading to his compound.
When he couldn’t hear any other sound besides the footsteps of Mr. James and the crickets in the bush, Lucas quickened his pace until he caught up with him.
The first blow from the rock with Lucas, smashed open the back of Mr. James’s head. He fell down immediately with a spread of blood soaking up the cold earth. The second blow killed him.
He threw the rock into the bush and whistled as he walked back the path leading to his house. No one heard or saw anything, he was one with the darkness that led the way.

The journey to Lagos was not as Long as Lucas had expected it to be. The very few people that had found their way to Lagos usually came back with tales of how difficult the place was for strangers. They said Chief Nicholas never granted an audience to someone he didn’t invite.
He was seated in the Benz with the other helps that travelled down to the village with the Chief, while the Chief and his family travelled in a Landcruiser in front. He noticed the guns being held by the security men travelling with them and was fascinated. He had always wanted to hold a gun and fire it. Ayedade lacked activities that inspired the mind, his mind drifted to Mr. James. He wondered if anyone would have seen his body by now. He had wanted to drag the corpse to the bush but decided to leave it along the part. It was better if people believed that thieves had robbed and killed him.
That was not his first time though.
Lucas remembered when he was a little over 12, and the village vigilantes had paraded a thief. He had been caught the night before, stealing goats from the compound of a widow. The thief was tied to a tree after they found out that he was from the neighboring village. They began negotiating with his people for the return of all the suspected theft of goats he must have committed in the past.
Lucas was fascinated by the fact that a muscular man, notorious by the way his eyes shone could be rendered powerless. In the middle of the night, he sneaked to the tree where the man had been bound and gave him a cup of water. Before long they both became friends as Lucas started taking food to him also.
After two weeks of being tied to the tree, the thief was told that he would he released the next day and handed over to his village. He was overjoyed that night when Lucas came to visit him, he excitedly told him about his impending freedom. Lucas promised to visit him in his village during the next dry season.
When Lucas got home again, he couldn’t sleep. He kept tossing and turning. The thief called Dada had become his friend. So he made sure his mother was fast asleep and tiptoed out of the house again. When Dada saw him, he was glad. He had been thinking of his little friend and how nice Lucas had been to him. But the closer Lucas got the more he wondered if something was wrong. Lucas was walking a a strange way, with shoulders held high and eyes looking straight ahead, no smile no frown.
Lucas was already in front of him when he noticed what he held in his hand. The blade pierced into Dada’s neck, dividing his esophagus, he starting coughing out blood, beside those streaming out from his neck. His eyes opened up with surprise, he never imagined the sweet delicate boy would be the one to kill him. He died with that surprise still in his eyes. That was the first time Lucas had a hard-on.
When he got to his bed, having disposed the knife on his way home, he wondered if he was demonic. The ecstatic rush he felt when he killed the thief was indescribable, but he couldn’t stop feeling guilty. So he closed his eyes and prayed that God forgave him. He promised never to kill another man again.
That was until Mr. James decided to defile his mother. He didn’t see the need to ask God for forgiveness for that one.
The Welcome to Lagos sign he was when their car had gotten to a place called ‘Berger’. The amount of people coming and going was uncountable. He had heard about the population of Lagos but hadn’t expected the amount to be this much at the outskirts. Different girls dressed like the devil’s concubines paraded themselves from every corner of the street. Different cars honked as they all seemed to be in a hurry to the same place. Young and old guys chased the speeding cars with drinks and sausages. Lagos was mad. He loved it.
The Chief was going to Abuja for a meeting, so he was driven to the airport, while the rest of them continued the journey to Victoria Island.
The house that emerged from the driveway was everything they had described it to be and more. Beautiful trees and shrubs designed the compound. It looked like a house from the magazine. Uniformed men and women quickly came to help them with the bags and food stuffs they had brought from the village.
That was when he saw Daniela.
She was slim and had the longest legs he had seen a girl have. Her breast and waist complimented her body to perfection. Her skin was like milk, her lips were like sugar.
“Hello, you must be Lucas. I never knew there were fine guys in that God forsaken village”, she said, extending her hand to him.
Her voice was like music.

Months had passed since he lost the chance to go to Lagos under the Chief’s tutelage. Sir Joe had encouraged him as much as he could but he still felt very bad. They had a quarrel the night before and he regretted some of the words he had used against his grandfather.
It had started with a collection of drunkards gathering in the already choked up room. He was trying to calculate the amount of yam he would be exporting to the next village as there had been an increase in demand for his ‘sugar’ yam. There discussion kept disturbing him.
He was forced to tell them to keep it down but was rebuked by one of them whose hair was more green than white.
“Luke, don’t disregard whatever we say here. We might be old and weak but someday you will be like us”, the greenish haired man called Sir Silvanus said.
“But I won’t be a drunk like you people,” Luke replied.
Sir Joe let out a roar of laughter.
“Small boy with the weight of the world on your chest, we don’t drink for the fun of it, we drink so that we can hear what the gods are saying quietly”, Sir Joe corrected.
“Why don’t you just buy a hearing aid like that white reverend that visits from Enugu?” Luke replied with Sarcasm.
“You are filled with anger and mistrust my child. It is not your fault really but how you were born and the kind of life you found yourself in. but that too is not changeable, it is your destiny”.
“God forbid grandpa, my destiny is not to grow old and rot here”.
The collection of drunkards laughed at once as if being controlled by an orchestra. After finishing the Yam, palm oil and salt that he had set aside to eat after coming back from the farm, different gin colored bottles littered the room.
“Your destiny is to be great like I have always told you. You will be greater than the greatest”, Sir Joe said, the stench of alcohol and awkward movement betraying the wise man gait he was trying to form.
“Go and give thanks to the gods,” the greenish haired man added.
Luke frowned.
“You will be so rich that food will be like paper,” Sir Joe continued.
“Why did you not see this kind of positive things about yourself grandpa?” Luke hissed.
“I saw positive things; I saw that I will be swimming in happiness for the rest of my life”,
“Swimming in alcohol is more like it”.
“Why are you filled with so much pain? Why do you invite it when it has not yet come?” Sir Joe asked.
“Pain is living in this village, grandpa. Pain is waking up to the drops of rain on my head because the roof is leaking. Pain is the sound of rats running across my body while I sleep and biting the foreskin of my feet before I wake up. Pain is to be with Electricity and a phone. Pain is to be without someone I can proudly call my family!”
The words had come out of his mouth before he realized. He saw the heartbreak in the eyes of Sir Joe as he immediately dropped his cup of gin.
“Luke, I thought I was your family?”
He tried finding the right words but couldn’t so he stormed out of the room and headed towards the stream.
Now it seemed Sir Joe was keeping malice with him. He didn’t touch the food he had made before going to the farm. Thankfully, he didn’t seem drunk too.
*************************************************************************************Lucas’s Mum walked quickly towards her house. Today was one of the days when the gods had smiled at her. She had visited Oga Michael in his house just before the Plantain plantation as he had always told her too. The thing was she was broke had Lucas hadn’t sent her any money since he travelled to the big city, and she couldn’t bear to farm. It was the work of men and dirty women. So she had had no choice than to succumb to Oga Michael’s flirtations. She was friends with his wife, in fact they were in the same group in church but she had to eat too.
When she got to Oga Michael’s house, he was the only one in. his children and wife had gone to the farm. He wanted to start with the whole story of how he had always loved her but she didn’t have the time. She squeezed her hand between his big stomach and the wrapper which was round his waist and found his manliness. She caressed his balls in a way she was sure her friend never did. When she was certain she had his attention, she went to his bed pulled her wrapper and laid on her back.
Oga Michael heard of how sweet her pvssy was from friends of his in the past. Now as he moved his waist to and fro, he admitted that they had all been correct. His wife was never this lovely even in her youth.
It didn’t last long before he spilled himself gracefully into her. Without much ado, she asked for the money he had promised her if she came around. He handed her the 2000 Naira he had hidden under the bed away from the prying eyes of his eyes.
As she exited his compound, she saw a familiar sight, coming with a basket on her head. She identified the figure as Oga Michael’s wife; she wondered why she came back from the farm so early. Well some people are lazy she told herself as she quickened her footsteps.
When she got to the front of her house, waiting for her was a driver who plighted between the village and Lagos every fortnight. With him was an envelope from her son, Lucas.
As the last piece of 500 Naira was counted making it 25000 , she felt bad for the slight discomfort she still felt between her legs.
