Depends of Country... British, Australian, Canadian, or American Etc. Teacher no teach me Lobbish. grin
I know Americans use that first pronunciation of divorce which you are telling us is wrong.

As for Often .... BOTH pronunciations with the silent T and the Audible T are correct.
Same with DATA... can be pronounced as both both DAHTAH and DAYTAH.... Americans pronounce it as DAAYDA (The roll the T as fast D) ... Australians say DAH-TAH

Question is which English does Nigeria speak officially? It's British English so forget about the American pronunciation and focus on the British pronunciations. In that light, the OP is correct and not teaching "lobbish".

Bought a computer a few months ago, and the System's own Auto Correct system was telling me that the spelling of Labour and Colour were incorrect... Yeah right
Obviously, Britain is not doing enough to protect its own legacies.

Oral English is poorly taught in 9ja.
Very surprising when you arrive in UK for the first time. At least we said we copied UK system. Hard to compare with American English.

Even Balewa & Ahmadu Bello who were Grade II teachers had better spoken England than most 9ja trained professors of today. cheesy grin grin cheesy

There are words we use in almost our day to day activities, words we pronounce wrongly everyday, without Knowing we are.

Using the word “Sachet” as an example, we pronounced it “Sah-chet” While the correct oral pronunciations should be “Sa-shay.”

Here are a few correct pronunciations to guide us:

1. Vegetable

2. Divorce

3. Vehicle

4. Often

5. Sachet

6. Résumé

7. Chaos

8. Data

Did you just learn some new tips, Well that try to is what we all should do everyday to be more smarter for a smarter Nigeria

Op, while trying to correct folks, you made some blunders. It's incorrect to say 'more smarter'. You either say smarter or more smart.
But, some of your pronunciations are also wrong. Please do a thorough job before posting.
Thanks!

My pronunciation is right except Divorce although I pronounce it's as De-vorce sometimes and Dye-vorve sometimes but the British use Dye-vorve and Americans use De-vorce. So I'll say I'm correct both ways

Obviously, Britain is not doing enough to protect its own legacies.

That is not correct completely. In informal settings, any of the variants is acceptable if there is proper communication and understanding. However, for official purposes, as a Nigerian you must stick with British English. I bet you cant spell "Labour" as "labor" in a "Use of English" examination and expect to be svored correct.
The computer you talked about has provision in its language setting for you to choose the variant of English you want. Most laptops are from the US or from China by US companies and so they come with the default American English setting. It's your choice to use it that way or change the Language to British or any other English variant.

I couldn't read through all the replies, hope someone has pointed out to the OP to refrain from using double comparative.

Say...smarter... NOT ...more smarter...

Spoken English in Nigeria is nothing to write home about. Lots of kids are taught wrong pronunciations and also, the society does not encourage oral English.

I could recall during my PPA as a corper, my computer classes were superior both pronunciation and practical and the students wanted me to teach them conversational English as well, but I refused in order to save someone's job. grin

A student said he could see bed fly. I was confused and said bed does not fly. grin

I had to correct his pronunciation on bird. grin
