Am Confused With The English Used In This Physics Practical. by Nobody: 4:27pm On Mar 26, 2017
I just saw the physics waec 2017 practical specimen and when I checked previous questions related to the apparatuses mentioned especially the number 1, I felt it is simple harmonic motion. Now I got a past question that involves these apparatuses and was confused with "Hold both ends of the rule and displace the rule slightly, then release so that it oscillates about a vertical axis through its centre." I've not done this type of practical before, am familiar with other shm practicals but my issue is how they mean by the rule oscillating about a vertical axis. Please just help if you can.
Thanks.

with my experience, it shld move the way the earth moves. along it vertical axis.
Everything u needed is there. check the direction if the arrow, thats how it shld move.

the one i have been seeing online has to deal with a mass, but the waec apartus stated two meter rule so i guess instead of one meter rule and 100g mass, two meter rules will be use. that is the second meter rule will serves as mass n d weight will be uniformly distribute on d first meter rule.

Bifilar suspensions. This was the first physics practical question in WAEC 2009. I remember very vividly

I guess the second meter rule is to be used for measurements of the other lengths of the strings

Yes for the ropes or finding centre of gravity...

Thanks my people, if not for these contributions I wouldn't have known about anything called bifilar...
But how do you tie the ropes at the retort stand without compromising the accuracy of your measurements

It is a university's first year physics practical

But how do you tie the ropes at the retort stand without compromising the accuracy of your measurements

The lengths will be given to you at which you will set the ruler into different oscillations with them

How do one set the ruler into oscillation? is it by pulling in towards me, and releasing it, such as in a simple pendulum?

yes I know, what am saying is how do I clamp the rope to the retort stand without somehow compromising. the. length

this is the exact question that am asking but don't know how to put it.

I'm confused about this too but i think that is how it should be considering that is the only way the set up could make a to-and-fro movement. I think what is meant by "vertical axis" is where the rule is being hung by the two ropes on the retort stand(the ropes are supporting the meter rule vertical, so that point where the ropes are being tied to the cork clamped with the stand is the "vertical axis" ) . This is the same with a pendulum bob tied to a rope and suspended vertically. It performs an oscillation along its vertical axis, which is from the point the bob is hung downwards.

But i need to be sure i am right with this

You will need to measure an excess length of the rope, and when tieing, you should make sure you only tie the excess. After you have tied, you should take the rule and measure the length of the rope again. If you have tied much, release a bit to meet the required lenght.

yeah. displace it at a small angle and count the number of oscillations taking note of the timing

yeah, knot it exactly at the given length by measuring excess. goodluck

Please I need the full specimen for 2017 physics practical. Will really appreciate if anyone can help post it here. Thanks in anticipation, God bless

The second practical is more confusing, is it on heat transfer, density or what?
Beaker(0---500cm^3);
Water;
Measuring cylinder(250cm^3);
Thermometer(0---200°C);
Stirrer;
Tripod stand with wire gauze;
Bunsen burner/ source of heart;
Stop watch/clock;
Table salt/common salt 50g

Note:The table salt should be available in 10g × 5 places for each candidate. Otherwise, am electronic balance should be provided

Please, post the b part of that question. The physics 2009 WAEC question 1b. ie 1 b part of the question

u hold both end and displace it like you are opening a tap,one end going forward and the other moving backward
