After watching this drone footage(battle for Mosul)
I was wondering if Nigeria were to deal with this level of insurgency.
Gaskiya there will be serious problem, our T72 MBT would melt with this level of explosion.

Nothing here man, apart from the frequency of the attacks on government forces in Iraq, we also face these tactics. It is nothing new.

Remember the drone strike footage, where a VBIED was racing towards 2 Nigerian army T-72 tanks. We faced worst terror threat in Africa alone. There is nothing ISIS is doing that we haven't seen in Nigeria.

The Iraqi's abandoned, did not loose in combat, simply lost over 500 Abrams tanks in Mosul and an additional 1500 pieces of heavy equipment.

The Iraqi's have the complete support of the Americans In the air, land and sea, including other NATO partners. They also have the support of Russia and a very significant Iranian contribution.

The Iraqi's got it easy. What did we get, not only no support , but sanctions on top of that. Our hands tied behind our backs, while confronting a vicious enemy.

Your question should have been, would Iraq exist today if they faced the same sort of situation Nigeria faced?

Iraq lost 2300 Humvees in Mosul alone.

They also lost the city to unbelievable odds, 10 Iraqi soldiers to 1 ISIS. You can imagine.

Nigeria would find it difficult to deal with ISIS. Despite the answer from the fraudster, ISIS is much more sophisticated than Boko Haram don't let him fo.ol you. It would be a major struggle for Nigeria to deal with a full blown ISIS insurgency.

In fact it would be a major struggle for most countries. The point is to not let these groups grow from the get go. Take action as soon as you see a threat, not desperately start buying new equipment after they've taken over half your country.

I know you are referring to Nigeria and i agree with the first two lines on the write up I quoted.

Kindly know half of Nigeria was not taken by boko haram, its was part of Maiduguri, yobe and Adamawa and they were all rural areas with huge land mass and low population density, but the mistakes then have been corrected now, and as the saying goes...NEVER AGAIN.

You are honestly saying that Boko is a superior enemy to ISIS?

Infact, their loss of Mosul and the rest of NE Iraq is exactly the same as how Nigeria lost many nothern cities and towns - collusion between insurgents and senior officers, massive and indemic corruption, poorly trained and equiped men who dont want to or cannot fight and most of all a coup-proof "siloed" military that couldent deploy for sh1t.

The Iraqi army, like the Nigerian army, has come a long way since then.

Its actually ludicrous that you would compare BH to ISIS on a plethora of levels. ISIS is the best of the best when it comes to insurgents.

You seem to take the odds we faced lightly. There are more SALWs proliferated in Africa, especially that Sahara region than anywhere else in the world.

If places were switched, with the level of support and equipment the Iraqi's had and still have, ISIL would have been a far gone conclusion. It's a no brainer.

Like you rightly said none of the places lost during the height of the insurgency had any strategic value. Occupying Sambisa forest which is a reserve is nothing.

The fact is, Iraq will not exist today if they faced the same odds as Nigeria. I don't believe, apart from Algeria, no country in Africa would exist today if they faced the same odds as Nigeria.

Delusion, the absolute height of delusion.

Lets talk facts.

Size of ISIL: 200,00 at peak. 31,000 Now
Boko: 10,000 at peak.

Lets now talk about equipment:
- ISIS has more T72's than the Nigerian military (for the duration of your operations against BH)
- ISIS has about the same number of feild guns as the Nigerian military
- ISIS has operational ATGM's, unlike the Nigerian military
- ISIS has more armed drones than the Nigerian military

Number of VBIED's by ISIS per year: 1,141
Number of VBIED's by BH: <10

This shows us that you either have no idea what you are talking about, or, you know exactly what you are talking about and are intentionally making misleading statements.

in iraq ISIS happened becz after US invasion it became a country divided against itself

majority sunni (major ISIS support base intentionally or unintentionally ) versus shia ( government in power )

plus a sizable handholding to ISIS from foreign covert agencies

initially it was a attempt by ex saddam generals to wrestle control from the shia dominated govt.

later much to their chagrin they lost the plot to foreign covert agencies who bought in external elements (jihadis all over the world and gave it the name ISIS with a iraqi bagdadi as their token leader ) with the primary aim to suppress any local element who might become a risk due to reluctance to indulge in large scale carnage in their own country .

take it from me
that supporting and nurturing large scale terrorism is a case of effective management much like human resource planning

ISIS is nothing but a classical case study of foolish people falling prey to extreme religious brainwashing done at the behest of people whom they r funnily supposed to hate .

It's ISIS, not History of Khoi San Music and Arts. Information is easily available. Boko Haram is nowhere near as capable as ISIS is (or rather was at its peak). The two don't fall into the same class at all.

Its not even a question of class, but spectrum

The battle for Mosul alone....

- More ISIS fighters involved than there are BH in total (12000)
- More allied forces involved than there were Nigerian soldiers in total (120 000)

Even by the massive standards of WW2, Mosul is a huge battle. Its even bigger (about twice the size) of the Battle for Hue in Veitnam. AND its only one of a number of fronts: ISIS face the SAA on the Dez-Azzure, Palmyra and North Raqqa fronts, Kurds on the Raqqa front and the Iraqi's on the Mosul front (there is another battle ontop of Mosul)

Lets not even mention the terrian - open spaces dominated by small built up villages is perfect for the defender and a death trap for the attacker. Defender gets all the cover and defender can slow down enemy advance and channel them through IED's. Then when the attacker gets to the objective they still have to engage in intensive CQB in booby trapped houses.

I would rather sweep the bush any day of the week

Its not even the same universe, let alone class or spectrum.

one thing i noticed is that some of the targets were in staging/parking areas

out of the box thinking would have most probably saved them

like placing magnetically influenced bar mines at ingress/egress points of the staging/parking areas

even simple dismantable and safe to handle IEDs could be used

another idea is that Iraqis could pay foreign companies to develop non compliant RF triggered magnetically influenced linear directional mines which can be placed and removed multiple times with relative safety.

linear directional mines will severe a VBIED into 2 pieces and hopefully destroy the IED mechanism before its detonation (sympathetic detonation)

every iraqi vehicle operating in specific high risk zone will be fitted with a RF device which will act as a kill switch to the non compliant RF triggered magnetically influenced directional mines. so when a friendly vehicle fitted with the RF kill switch passes over the non compliant RF triggered magnetically influenced directional mines it shuts down the magnetically influenced triggering mechanism , as long as the kill switch RF device remains in the zone of of the mines RF operational range (say 10 meters) . once the kill switch device fitted vehicle moves away the mine automatically activates again.

but when a terrorist VBIED approaches or passes over the said mine , it will detonate the magnetically influenced mine since the terrorist vehicle is not equipped with the kill switch RF device.

nice way to terrorize the terrorists with their own terror tools grin

Good idea, but the mine would cost more than a surplus hummer and 6 iraqi soldiers.

no as far as i know

COTS technology is available to implement this the RF kill switch device should cost <= 100 dollars or more depending on the sophistication/investment .

as for the mines it will cost 20-30% more that comparable mines again depending on the sophistication / investment.

if the americans / europeans develop it , then nobody will be able to afford it grin

if asian / african etc countries develop it then it will be cheap.

heck even a kid with proficiency with RF devices and related components will be able to develop a amateur level working RF based kill switch. developing the mines will need professionals .

US conducts strike on al Shabaab, Somalia says training base destroyed

WASHINGTON/NAIROBI (Reuters) - The Pentagon said it had carried out an air strike on al Shabaab in Somalia on Sunday, and Somalia said its special forces had joined in the attack to destroy one of the jihadist insurgent group's main training and command posts.

The office of President Mohamed Abdullahi said the base was located on Sakow, in the Middle Juba region in southern Somalia.

"Earlier today, I authorised our special forces with the support of our international partners to conduct a strike against an al Shabaab training camp near Sakow," his statement said.

"This was a successful strike that destroyed a key al Shabaab command and supply hub. This will ultimately disrupt the enemy’s ability to conduct new attacks within Somalia."

The statement did not specify the extent of damage or say if there had been casualties. There was no immediate comment from al Shabaab.

Since being pushed out of the capital Mogadishu in 2011, al Shabaab has lost control of most of Somalia's cities and towns. But it still retains a strong presence in swathes of the south and centre and still carries out major gun and bomb attacks.

The group aims to topple Somalia's government, drive out African Union peacekeeping troops and impose its own harsh interpretation of Islamic law.

On Thursday, al Shabaab killed 59 people in an attack on a military base in the semi-autonomous Puntland region in northern Somalia.

I do agree though, ISIS is more sophisticated than BH, that's my own opinion. But unless these guys opened their books to us , any number is nothing but made up, AKA, an estimate. Estimate isn't fact.
