Chapter 19

The room went silent.

Devine looked at John in shock.

What?

No wonder he had been summoned, Devine thought, this piece of news changed everything.

No wonder John had called him when he saw the file was sealed.

Could John really be sure?

James dropped his hand that was about to pick up the phone on the table, the Home Secretary was momentarily forgotten.

‘Repeat that again, John?’ Commander James asked.

‘Sir, I am 95% certain that the owner of the DNA I tried to access is the mother of Child Peter.’ John said as he looked the Commander in the eye.

Devine and Commander James stared at each other.

95% was a very compelling number in the world of DNA.

The phone on the Commander's desk started ringing, he paused. ‘Give me thirty minutes, this conversation is not over,’ he said as he pointed to the door and picked up the phone.

‘Sorry for keeping you waiting Home Secretary,’ they heard him say as they walked out of his office.

Devine flopped onto a chair in front of the Commander’s office.

He turned to John, ‘Could there have been a mistake?’ Devine asked.

‘I mean can we be mistaken?’

‘We both have heard of contamination of DNA.’ Devine said.

‘I ran the test twice Devine, I was surprised that after all this time we would get a hit. So I ran it twice, just to be sure.’ John replied.

Devine was quiet as he digested the news, the enormity of the news dawning on him.

This was very unusual Devine thought to himself, he did not need a genius to tell him the implication of what they had just uncovered.

Officer Lucas was linked to Child Peter, he hoped that she had nothing to do with the murder.

Devine thought back to the Child Peter case, it was a case he would never forget. As with every police officer there was always one that got away. This case was it, as he cast his mind back to the case.

He had been part of the Metropolitan Police working out of Vauxhall at the time.

A member of the public had called the police, the name escaped him right now.

The man had told the operator, that he had initially thought he was looking at a bundle of clothes.

There had been a very unusual high tide, the preceding two days before and the Thames Barrier had been closed for two days. It had been very unusual as the unusually high tide hadn’t been predicted by the supersonic computers crunching away predictions and forecasts at the Meteorological office. Luckily disaster had been averted by an engineer on duty that night, that bit of news had not been shared with the public.

However, due to that high tide the River had taken what it wanted, sucking all it wanted along its wake never to be seen again. When the tide went out, the River had also left what it found wanting. Leaving debris scattered on the shoreline, some valuable, some not including what seemed like a bundle of clothes near Tower Bridge.

Dave Lomax, Devine finally remembered the name of the member of public who had called it in.

Dave Lomax was a retired sailor who liked walking along the Thames when the tide was out looking for unusual treasures. He had found some Roman coins in that past that had netted him a tidy sum, so he continued his hobby of trawling the shoreline once the tide was out.

Dave soon found that what he was looking at was not a bundle of clothes atfer all. He had lost his breakfast next to his gruesome find.

It turned out not to be clothes at all.

What Dave Lomax had stumbled upon was a torso of a black child. The arms, legs, head and heart were missing, the piece of anatomy on the torso was the only physical thing helping them initially determine that he was a boy.

Devine would have lost more than his breakfast if he had encountered such a grisly find.

The Metropolitan Police had appealed extensively to the public no one came forward, no one came forward to help the police with their enquires. It was a traumatic case for all concerned, the UK had never experienced anything like it.

He remembered speaking to one of his colleague’s at the Metropolitan Police when they got back to their desks.

Lolu Oguntade was British of Nigerian extraction, he had been the first person to tell told Devine that he believed it was a ritualistic killing. Such things are part of the culture in some parts of Africa.

‘Lolu how can someone kill a child for a ritual?’ Devine had asked, the image burned into his brain.

‘I know it is barbaric Devine, but it is the reality of those places.’

‘I doubt if we will ever find out the identity of the child.’ Lolu had said, with sadness in his voice.

He had been right, Devine thought.

After years of inactivity they finally had their first break, he was curious how the Witch of Merseyside fit into this case, Devine thought as he opened up outlook to see what emails needed his attention.

Chapter 20

Eliora’s handler, the person on the phone who had called her to notify her of the file breach was based in Vauxhall in south east London.

When she had assumed her new identity they had both thought that she would never need to come in. Gary Foster who had put a hit on her head was in prison serving three life sentences. But as a precaution they had both agreed on her having a second phone just in case.

What could happen in a backwater town like Sheerness, they had thought.

She had never had the need to use it until now and in the space of 24 hours she had used it twice.

She sent a text message from her second phone ‘coming in, on my way now, should be there in two hours.’

Thinking about the attempt on her life and the subsequent change of identity she wondered what had actually drawn her to her new name. She had been looking for something different, that didn’t sound so ethnic.

In her mind the new name sounded mysterious and very English.

Now she wondered if she hadn't unconsciously chosen the name as it reflected what she had been seeking at that point in her life.
Light, hope and guidance.

She had found it hard to hope for anything after the loss she had suffered.

Was it an unconscious thing, or had it been fate that drew her to that name.

She had gone from Dutotimi Willioms to Eliora Lucas.

The two names couldn’t be more different, she sighed.

Eliora decided to take the train, she was in no state to drive. She drove to the station and left her car in the car park and set off on the train. She had too much on her mind and she did not want to be distracted by driving and not able to concentrate properly. She was still getting over her meeting with Margaret the night before.

She was still in shock; three babies, she had two brothers out there somewhere.
Where were they?

What had happened to them?

How had they fared with their adoptive parents?

When she had left Margaret she was taking a nap; all the talking had worn her out. She decided that she was going to go back and talk to her. She had a lot more questions to ask her.

I hope she will be lucid Eliora thought to herself.

She then remembered Margaret had mentioned journals. Her Mother’s journals were in the loft. How come she had never known they were there?

She them berated herself, she had just moved into the cottage. Margaret had lived there on her own for years. Eliora hadn’t wanted to move into the place. But Margaret had insisted she should move in, that it was going to be hers anyway once she was gone. She was still unpacking boxes so she had not had the chance to explore unseen places in the house.

Three of them, the number kept on going round and round in her head.

She still could not get over the shock. How come she had never known?

The story of her birth did not help answer the questions she had; instead it scared the sh!t out of her. For Margaret to be agitated up till now with whatever she had experienced that day, bore testament to the fact that it must have been very harrowing.

What had her mother encountered in that strange place she had gone to?

It was amazing to know that she was a mixed race person noone looking at her would not even believe it.

Her hair for instance; she had the coarsest hair known to any black woman, as much as she tried to embrace the natural movement the combs always thought otherwise. The hair was so thick she went through afro combs like tissues.

Her Mother had been blond? Blond.

The rush of information she was trying to process made her exhausted and light headed.

Nigeria that had been a surprise. She had a connection to Nigeria. It pleased her to know that, at least she could tell people that when they asked her about her heritage.

When people had asked her before she had said she did not know. People gave her strange looks, but one look from her made a lot of people stop asking questions pronto.

What had her Mother encountered in that place as she tried to remember the name of the place Margaret had mentioned? Yes, Ile-Ife, she would google it later.

The story Margaret had told her was just too scary and creepy not to be true.

It helped answer some of the questions she had. She had noticed she had certain strange abilities. she had not told anyone, but Danny had suspected but he had not come out directly to ask her point blank about certain things.

He had told her a few times he would not like to be questioned by her if he was a criminal.

Ceratin pivotal moments of her life came back in sharp focus. The explosion; it had not been luck or coincidence that had flipped the bath over and saved her. She would never forget what she saw that night, whenever she thought about that night the strange birthmark she had on her thigh started itching her.

She had tried to convince herself that it was the smoke, which had made her see things.

She had lost Danny and their unborn child that night, it had saved her, but not without devastating loss on Eliora’s part.

She sighed deeply as she watched the English countryside go by.

She googled her birth name. She could not rely totally on google as the only real thing it was good for was stuff in English. The results came back.

‘Stay with me’ it said.

Eliora thought back to what Margaret had told her about her mother, she had kept on saying the word. It was nice to know that her name had a meaning. She had always wondered how an orphan like her could have such an ethnic name. she had shortened it to Dee by time she got to secondary school.

That was another mystery how had she afforded to stay in Cobham Hall. Better yet how had Margaret an ex nun paid for her school fee’s? She had also been a boarder at one of the most prestigious girls’ school in Kent. Cobham Hall prided itself in producing well rounded self-sufficient girls. Emma Roberts had loved it so much after filming wild child, that the school had been inundated with queries.

There was an incident at the school that always stuck with her.

There had been a girl called Julie King, she had bullied Durotimi mercilessly, it had gone beyond light bullying it had been full of malice and murderous intent.
Rumour had it that up to 5 girls had left the school due to the bullying Julie had piled on them. One girl had attempted suicide as a result. Her father was the head of the board of school governors and her mother the head of the PTA at the time. So she had felt invincible.
As far as she was concerned she was the most important girl in the school and she took meanness to murderous heights.

The girls in her dorm, were in thrall of Julie and did everything she said to them without thinking. They all wanted to be in her good books so that they would be invited to her parties during the school holidays.

Durotimi never got invited, which was no surprise.

They called Durotimi ‘Midnight’ as they said they could never see her or find her at night time. Or they made out that they could not see her.

Julie decided to take the bullying she was heaping on Durotimi to new heights and played a horrific prank on her.

Karma they say is a b!tch and she certainly ain’t no good looking boy.

Something happened to Julie; the details were shrouded in mystery, all she knew was that she had a mental breakdown or some kind of something and she never came back to the school. She kept on saying to anyone who would listen to her that Durotimi was a witch, and was haunting her.

The headmistress had dismissed the whole Julie breakdown as the result of a guilty conscience and was relieved that she had finally been able to get rid of the horrific bully from the school.

Durotimi on the other hand had thought otherwise. Even then there were some strange things happening in her life.

Duro got to Victoria and took the tube to Vauxhall and her handler met her at reception and ushered her into an office.

There were three other men in the room waiting for her.
