Good day great people of this reputation forum the likes of justwise ,this my not be the best place for my write up but i need candid advice please. My name is Stanford ,39yrs of age from Rivers state ,married with kids.

Hopefully, I will be done with my PhD degree program in geoscience by November 2017. I have the intention of settling outside the country as a lecturer or geoscientist (i have got about 10yrs industrial experience including offshore experience) and relocating my family as soon as possible but lack the financial muscle to achieve it though my wife has been working for couple of years, her financial strength is just good enough for the family up keep. The storm in the oil and gas sector in 2015 affected my job so I started the PhD degree program ....I need advice on

1 The best way to leave the country (student visa or...)for my dream after my degree program.

2 The best county to relocate to,where getting my family over will be quicker

3 What do we think of a post doctorial research job or another PhD degree program while lecturing?

4 How about scholarship for international students?
Thanks to you all in advance....
Good day Stanford,
Clearly this is not the best thread for your question. You may need to check other threads on nairaland.
However, based on what this thread is all about, we try to provide information that an help members achieve their aim of successful application for spousal open work permit to Canada, I don't think it is out of order to give some pieces of advise based on the info you provided.
Canada is one of the best countries in the world you can migrate to; the economy is great, the people are friendly. I don't have accurate information about other countries, so I will not comment. With your PhD, I think you can try the express entry to Canada. There is a forum for express entry to Canada on nairaland, they will give you more info about how to apply. You can also find out more about express entry to Canada more
I know other members of this thread can provide information about other countries.
Canada gives fantastic scholarship for PhD to international students and success rate for study permit approval for PhD students is high. If you are considering applying for another PhD to Canada, the prospects of getting a scholarship and visa is high if you are admitted. But I don't think you need to do another PhD with your work experience and a PhD. You may have enough points that will qualify you for express entry, give it a try if you eventually want to consider Canada as an option.
My 10 cents

Wow!....what a revealing suggestion,I'm really new here.Thanks@wealth360

In my opinion, Canada and the US are great countries. One of the differences you might want to consider before you immigrate to any of the countries however is the prospect of becoming a citizen. It is way much easier to become a Canadian citizen or permanent resident in Canada than America, without marrying a citizen. Discrimination against immigrants in Canada is much lower, as it is now,Canada is welcoming immigrants as the US is sending immigrants away.

pls is it possible for me and hubby to apply at the same time for the work permit...he wld be going for his phd in newfoundedland, can't i just apply for the work permit along side his study permit or he has to go there first and resume as a student.
Thank you
Re: Canada Spouse Open Work Permit (sowp)timeline by Markab: 9:33am On Aug 08, 2017
I will answer you to best of my knowledge. YES, you can apply as an accompanying spouse but you have to demonstrate having strong ties back home and justify why you decide to follow him convincingly. This can be explained in your letter to the visa officer.

You guys must also demonstrate a very strong financial strength to support your application. I know of someone going for PhD that got approved with his wife and children and in addition to the funding he received, he had a closing balance of 10 million in his account.

Alternatively, I would advice you let your hubby get his visa and once he's enrolled, you can apply to join him on open work permit, your chance of approval is very high with this method, I have not seen any spouse of a PhD student denied by going through this method

Despite the fact that this thread is dry, I trust informations coming from experience present and past applicants. My questions goes like this:
1. My wife has done her change of names and newspaper publication that every other documents that carries her previous names remain valid as one person. But we have not done any change on her passport because her present passport expires in 2020. Can she apply with the passport like that?.

2. My daughter will be 1year 3months at the time of application, does she require a passport too at that age?

3. Concerning the above no 2 question, will my wife apply for TRV for our daughter separately?
4. If the above no3 question is YES, are we going to back it up with any document apart from her birth certificate?

Thanks awaiting positive responses.

@wealth360

Few answers pending when the gurus come on board.

2. She (baby) requires her international passport to process her application

3. Your wife will make TRV application for the baby alongside her application

4. Her birth certificate and passport should be what is required
Re: Canada Spouse Open Work Permit (sowp)timeline by VEIL1234: 10:51pm On Aug 11, 2017
While it is possible, It is advisable to apply for sowp after he has gotten his study permit. From the trend you are surer of getting an approval.
Your applying with him might even mar his chances of getting his TRV. This doesn't happen 100% of the time but from experience, it's better you wait.

Yes she applied for open work permit and no she didnt get a request for medicals. A friend told me that the passport could be sent back with a medical request letter. She is going there on Monday, its going to be a nerve racking weekend for her. Has anyone received this type of notification?

Bro we are somewhat in the same boat. My wife applied on April 25 and I just now tracked it based on your update. It said passport ready for collection on August 11. Which also means she can't confirm the outcome until Monday. This weekend is going to be rough. Only difference is that she did upfront medicals.

BTW this is her 4th application. Very long story on the history of this nonsense.

Hi,

1. I don't understand why you applied for change in Name even though its not mendatory at all. Anyway, as long as you dont have changed name mentioned anywhere on docs, you dont need to declare it proactively, neither you need to change it in passport right now and apply for new passport.

2. Regardless of age, you need a travel document/passport even for one day old child. So definitely you will need passport for your baby.

3 yes, you will apply for a visitors visa (more than six months) for your daughter separately. That visitors, when accompanied with a valid student visa/work visa of parents can let her attend any eligible school for free of cost.

You wont need any study permit to get her education till she is 12.

4. Passport and birth certificate is fine, dont need any additional doc

I really pray everyone waiting for monday get approvals IJN. My husband applied 17th May and I was finally able to link his app online just last week. I got his refusal letter today dated yesterday and they had ticked employement prospect in country of residence, travel history (he had studied in UK and visited Italy once, so i'm not sure if they need him to visit the moon before they are satisfied with travel history) and they ticked he did not meet exemption for C41(I am on Postgrad openwork permit and working fulltime in a skilled job. We attached my employment contract stating my job duties, hours per week, salary and NOC code and also attached my payslip, so I don't know their problem).

He did not do medicals because he just got back from UK in May and they said he doesn't need one. This is the third refusal for OWP, the other two my husband applied while in Uk, in the notes they had stated his immigration status in UK, that he was on study permit bla bla bla which was why we decided he return to Nigeria to apply for it and now they came up with another story.....End of Rant

Anyway on the positive side, we got ITA for express entry last week, I had already filled out the forms and waiting to attach proof of medicals, my husband had called the medical centers in Lagos and they said they collect only passport as proof of ID, so good thing we got the decision yesterday so he can get his passport and go for the medicals and we can face express entry. IT IS WELL. Sorry for the long story
