This is exactly what Rotimi Amaechi wanted to do in Rivers state while he was governor by building those model schools. But due to politics of hate, Rivers indigenes deliberately allowed those facilities to damage without any maintenance whatsoever by his successors.

Nigerians, who do us this thing?

One of the major problems facing leadership in Nigeria is continuity!

Selfishness, greed and hatred has taken the place of continuity.

This template may not work in Nigeria considering our big size and rapidly increasing population. Small countries like Rwanda can use templates of countries with their own size while Nigeria would need to study the templates of emerging big economies like India, Pakistan and Indonesia while copying the models of big countries like China, USA, Brazil and Mexico and not Scandinavian countries as some have suggested.

For instance the template we used for higher education in the 80s is the same template S/Africa uses now but funding as become an issue for S/African varsities as the country does not allow the establishment of private universities. Now with the problematic model S/Africa and Nigeria used the only reason why S/African varsities could rank higher than that of Nigeria was that while Nigeria has about 85 public universities(Not enough if private univ are abolished) S/Africa only has about 24(most likely enough). The Nigerian own was draining cash as the university system expanded and the funding for each university became diluted year in year out.

So if we are serious about ending education tourism, sack the idea of running private universities out of business. However increase funding but DO NOT expand the public university system which would ensure that indigent and brilliant students who want university education can still get access. Allow the rich and middle class of the society to attend private universities and flourish that system. If done successfully the private universities should be encouraged to seek out foreign students from neighbouring African countries to increase their enrollment which would also advance Nigeria's economy.
lalasticlala

Must it be the country that will copy the templates? How many states in Nigeria are bigger than Rwanda in terms of size and population? Why cant states adopt the same template that has worked for Rwanda?

you can make excuse for Naija all u want... Nigeria is too big for this visionless leaders to run.. even if naija is as small as Togo , I don't think things would be different....

makerere university in Uganda ranks among first 1000 in the world. while d giant of Africa couldn't make the list...

Keep quiet and stop ranting publicly about something you obviously know very little about.

How many of the model schools Amaechi built were functional while he was still governor. Most of the buildings were not even completed and ready for school use, some were overtaken by bushes because they were abandoned. It will interest you to know that some of the existing schools before these model school project came along were taken down in order to have these model schools which became either uncompleted or abandoned projects. The once that were completed were not even equal in sizes to the old classrooms which were taken down. How do you replace a classroom of say 70 pupils with a 40 pupil space without a provision for the remaining 30.

All the same some of the schools in PH metropolis are in use but it doesn't take away the fact that this project was largely a failure by the amaechi govt. which served mainly as an avenue for embezzlement like other projects before and after it.

No matter what people say about Kagame,he still remains the only African leader(past and present) that I 've got loads of respect for. Since the RPF came to power after ending the genocide,it has been one big leap after the other for tiny Rwanda(no insults intended). Kagame is the kind of guy I like. Meanwhile, somewhere west of the continent, education remains "a rock science" and the private schools keep piling up...a tale of two cities(countries I meant) indeed. NOTE: Rwanda is no oil and gas giant. Just tourism, agriculture and a few other things.

Those model schools could not have achieved what Rwandan schools have achieved. Do you know why?
1. The schools are too small. How many pupils can one of them accommodate? When you build a school that can only take a small fraction of the old school it was supposed to replace, it will lead to one inevitable outcome, which is below.
2. Corruption found its way in. You'd have to cough up whatever amount the head of the school tells you to, in order to secure admission for your child or ward, in a school that is supposed to be free. Most of the time, there is no space at all.

The intentions were marvelous, but intentions are not enough. You need to follow up on those intentions to ensure they become reality. That is what private schools in Nigeria do to survive. That is the very thing the government has consistently failed to do in public schools.

Paul kagame is in line to becoming the best president in the history of Africa...... No wonder he gulped 93%of rwandese votes.

Kigali is also the most beautiful city in Africa, unlike overrated Lagos and Abuja

He is not. The beautification of a capital city is not a sole criteria for good leadership. He is effectively running a dictatorship and undermining the institutions that would build the future Rwanda.

Na so e suppose be.

Over here, we started with primary schools. Government totally abandoned them and private took over.

Then we moved to secondary schools, our government secondary schools look like shanties. Apart from a few with good principals and alumni and the Catholic run ones, we are left with leaking roofs, no seats, terrible, under qualified and unpaid teachers.

Now, it's the turn of universities. Politicians and government officials' children school abroad. They've reduced funding for public schools. Curriculum never gets updated. ASUU strike is getting more frequent as the years go by. Lectures' allowances aren't paid amd lecture halls are inadequate and unwholesome. The hostels are another matter, be looking like slaughter houses. I know cause I stayed in one for five years.

Very soon, if you want quality tertiary institution for your ward, you'll have to go private. Public universities will become redundant the way it is going.

Why not, because politicians, just like secondary schools, now own universities.

What do you think is the root cause?

Complain all you want of our "leaders", fact of the matter is you all put them there. Many of you guys comparing Kagame to what we have will still vote morons like Dino Melaye into power. All it takes during the elections are a few bags of rice and money for people to vote these guys. I bet you Buhari will still be president after 2019

Majority of those in government will not allow this to work in Nigeria coz they run private institution

Even employee of education ministries, public school teachers do...they will do all they can to make it not to work out

Nigeria' population will equally not allow this to work
