The doctor looked at the both of them and sighed, ''Like I said, the
poison has already damaged his liver...

''Can't we do a liver transplant? K.C interrupted again.

''No, too late.'' The doctor replied and switched his
attention to injecting K.C's dad.

''Doctor, don't tell me he's not gonna make it'' K.C enquired and
looked from his sister to his mother. No way! It can't happen. He is
far from shouldering all those repsonsiblities--three sister? He could
barely handle them with his father around,

The doctor shrugged and turned to face K.C ''I'm so...'' he started
but was cut short by Chidiebere who screamed 'dad'.

In a split second, K.C was already by his dad's side, even the rest of
the family, including Dami crowded around him.

''You need to give him a little space,'' the doctor said and
began putting back his medical instruments into his little first-aid
like box.

''Dad, what happened to you?'' K.C questioned his dad when his eyes
fluttered open.

''Son, how are you?''

''Dad, that wasn't what I asked you''

''K.C, is that how to talk to your dad?'' his mum scolded.

With a snort, K.C forced himself to calm down, ''Dad, do you mind
explaining what happened.

''Son, I am sorry, you warned me, you warned me, I'm so sorry, I
shouldn't have gone into politics'' his dad said and the tears that
his mum has been holding back, she let it all out.

Dami who already had her eyes filled with tears, went over and began
Comforting her.

''Dad, so what you are saying, is that a fellow politician poisoned
you?'' K.C asked his dad, even though he already knew the answer, he
just wanted to hear it from his dad.

While he waited for his dad to speak, he shut his eyes tight and
prayed for him to say otherwise. He shrieked when his dad calmly said
'yes'

''Son, I'm sorry, sorry for ever cheating on your mum back then''

He shook his head at his dad, his sisters didn't know about the
cheating issue and he had always wanted it to remain that way but it's
too late already, Chidiebere was already giving him an inquisitive
stare.

''Dad, if mum has forgiven you then it's okay'' he replied and gave
Chidiebere a pleading glance--begging her not to speak.

''I'm sorry for that time I burned you with that hot iron.'' his dad
said again with his eyes closed.

The whole family turned to look at K.C and the words he was about to
say got caught in his throat. Just he and his mum knew about the
incident, when it happened, the younger sisters has been at the
boarding school, while Chidiebere had gone for  holiday at an uncle's
house in Canada.

''K, what's dad talking about?'' his sister who had been staring hard
at him, asked.

''It's not something important'' he replied her and looked at his mum,
who was sobbing silently.

''I'm sorry for everything, I wish I had spent more time with my
family, I wish I...I wish I didn't go into politics, I wish I had just
faced my company and my business''

K.C watched his dad with tears streaking down his cheek, he didn't
care anymore if it's manly to cry or not.

''Dad, you will survive.'' He said, trying to assure himself, even
though the truth was right infront of him.

''I'm sorry son, please take care of the company''

''Dad, it's okay''

''Take care of your sister,'' his dad weakly said.

''Dad, stop talking as if you're gonna die'' he screamed, obviously hurt badly.

The doctor brought out a syringe and injected his dad, when he made to
talk again.

''What's that?'' K.C inquired.

''I just sedated him, he will be fine.'' the doctor assured, but K.C
knew better than to believe his words, his face, his red eyes,
everything, proved that he's lying.

''Doctor, are you sure he will be alright?'' K.C asked, wishing he
could read the doctor's mind.

''Ofcourse.'' the doctor replied with a smile that didn't reach his eyes.

K.C sighed and gave the doctor one last inquisitive stare, ''It's
alright, thanks for everything.'' he said, as the doctor began walking
away.

''Ma, I will be on my way now,'' the doctor informed K.C's mum whose
sobbing has now reduced a volume, ''your husband will be fine.'' the
doctor added with a smile.

Something about the doctor's smile didn't quite fit in and K.C could
see it; the way he was smiling this minute and frowning the next, but
he shrugged and decided to take the doctor's word for it, instead of
asking unnecessary questions.

''Mum, I'm leaving for my room, should I leave dad on this couch or I
should carry him in.'' he asked, not even knowing how he would or
where he would start carrying his 'fat' dad if his mum says 'Yes'

''No, let him stay there'' was her reply and he praised God inwardly,
he had asked without thinking.


He got to his room and started undressing, when he heard a knock on his door.

''Who is there?'' he asked, wondering who would be disturbing him in
this kind of condition.

''It's Dami.'' came the reply.

He smiled without knowing why, ''Wait, I will be decent in a minute.''

''Okay,'' she replied.

''You can come in now,'' he said and sat on his bed.

The door creaked open and she popped her head in, ''Do you mind if we
talk, just a minute.''

''I'm not in the mood for talking.'' he replied dryly.

Her heart sank and she turned to leave.

''Are you kidding me? Come in'' he said to her.

She turned sharpily and gave him a cold stare, ''So you still find
time to be funny, in this kind of situation?'' she asked.

He nodded and smiled, ''I'm confident...I know it, my dad will be fine.''

She cast a nervous look up at him. ''Let's hope so!''

K.C tensed inwardly. ''What is it?'' he asked. He didn't like the
sound of her voice.

''Nothing,'' she replied carelessly and smiled at him. ''I just came
to keep you company''

''Thanks, don't mind the untidy room. I intend going back to my
apartment this evening and then we leave for Enugu overmorrow.''

''No problem,'' she replied.

''Thanks for agreeing to stay.''

''You don't have to thank me, what are friends for?'' she asked, and
laughed, K.C joined in the laughter after few seconds.

''Ken, I'm taking Agozie to the hospital today, do you mind driving me there?''

''Vicky, please and please don't disturb me. Can't you see I'm late for work?''

''I...I...I know but remember my car is still with the mechanic.''
Vicky replied, almost close to tears.

''I will send a driver and another car for you as soon as I get to the
office.'' he said and carried his briefcase.

''Ken, why are you treating me like this? Please if I have offended
you, please forgive me.''

''Vicky, just let me be okay? Let me be?'' he shouted.

''It's okay, you can go, safe journey, please send the driver before
11AM, it's 9 now.''

''Better!'' he snapped and left.

Nate sat in his office, smiling to himself. He had invited Jane to his
house the previous night and she honoured the dinner invitation.

After the dinner, his mum had danced and danced till she got exhausted.

''Finally, my son is getting married!'' she kept on chantting as she danced.

He shook his head and laughed, his dad on his own had promised him
heaven and earth; honeymoon is paris, a house in maitama and several
cars of his choice.

He didn't know how his single life affected his dad until his dad
started saying it, him attending friend's sons wedding without anyone
attending his own and donating big amount and cars in baby dedications
and naming ceremony's without having anyone to call a grandchild. He
hadn't considered all that when he decided to be single--the hurt,
pain and worries that his parents faced on daily basis.

''Why are you smiling?''

Jane's voice brought him out of his reverie.

''I'm smiling because of you, my queen.'' he replied and went to her
and encircled her in his arms.

He had been so engrossed in his thoughts that he didn't hear her enter.

''I just came to give you this file.'' she responded, while dropping
the file on his desk.

''Ah! A kiss for your king, is that too hard to ask?''

''Kiss, no way! I'm a christian, give way, I have work to do.'' she
teased and turned to leave.

''I can just lock the door and you won't be able to leave.''

''I will scream.'' she replied with her hands on her ears.

''My queen!'' he petted.

''Better, your mum asked me to come this weekend, did she tell you?''

Nate grinned mischieviously, ''get your ears ready, I'm sure she will
have more than enough stories to keep you busy.''

''I'm ready to listen.'' she replied and pushed him aside.

''My queen.'' he called.

''Prince charming, I have work to do.'' she said and left.

He laughed heartily. It sure feels good to be in love!

''Queen, that's what I've been passing through.'' Vicky lamented.

''My bestie, you mean Ken has turned into this kind of monster?''

''Monster is an understatement, today, just for him to drop me at the
hospital, he refused, I'm so confused right now, Ken wasn't like
this''

''Have you tried to find out what's wrong with him?'' Queen asked.

''Countless times, bestie.''

''Just keep trying sis, marriage is not a bed of roses, you need to
follow him with patience.'' Queen advised with her hand of Vicky's
back.

''I'm running out of patience. If he want's to bring in Katherine, he
should. I'm sick and tired of this marriage, Queen I'm tired!'' Vicky
cried out in complete pain.

''Vicky, don't say that. It's your marriage; it's your home. You  need
to stay and fight to keep what is yours.''

''Vicky, I'm tired, I can't keep fighting a lost battle, how can I
fight for what I already lost? It's obvious he now loves Katherine
more than me, maybe it's because of all the surgery and adjustments
she did to her body but as for me? God forbid! I won't change my body
or put silicone into my body because of a man that came to his own
world, he can go to he..."

''Vicky, it's okay now. Nobody is going to hell. Ken is your husband,
Kath is a strange woman, you won't leave your home for her. Bestie,
this is the right time to go to God in prayer and ask him..."

Vicky hissed and patted her sleeping baby, ''Don't even go there, I'm
done praying, pray for who? If it's for Ken, then no way. My only
prayer now is for Chiagozie not to grow up and be like his father.''

''Vicky, it hasn't gotten to that. You know what? I will come and talk
to Ken myself, I'm sure he will listen to me.'' Queen replied, with
assurance.

''Queen, it's okay. Before he gets a reason to throw me out of the
house, faster, please don't say anything to him before he accuses me
gossiping with his name''

Queen was still patting Vicky's back gently and soothingly when a
young student walked in.

''Miss Queen, the principal wants to see you.''

''Ok, Tricia. Thanks.''

''Vicky, please give me a minute, I don't know what that principal
wants from me now. Honestly, I'm tired of this job, I'm still praying
for God to pick up my own call o, imagine a school, where you can't
scold a student and you give them whatever grade they want.'' Queen
said and stood up.

''That's how low our educational system has deteriorated to.''

''Will you be here, or..."

''Nah, nah, a driver is waiting for me outside, the driver that Ken
sent, I need to go now.''

''Alright, thanks for coming, I will come see you on saturday,''

''Thanks alot, goodbye bestie'' Vicky said and then began packing
Agozie's things into his bag.

''Miss, miss, the principal wants to see you.'' another students cane
rushing in.

''I will be there soon,'' Queen replied the girl and turned back to
Vicky. ''You see what I'm saying.''

''Sorry bestie.'' Vicky said, sincerely.

''It's okay, I just pray for God to give me another job.'' Queen said,
with a wave of her hand.

''God will do it,'' Vicky comforted and carried her sleeping baby,
''I'm leaving now.''

''Bye bestie, bye Agozie.'' Queen said with a smile, that she didn't
feel. Obviously she's being stressed more than necessary.

K.C stirred in his sleep and slowly opened his eyes to see Dami
sitting at the edge of the bed, looking at him.

''Awww, my head hurts. How long have I been sleeping?''

''Almost five hours now.'' Dami replied.

''Five what?''

''After all the night party and engagement party, I'm sure you're
really tired.''

''That was 3 nights ago and my head still hurts badly. Ouch!'' he exclaimed.

''Yeah 3 nights ago and you haven't slept well since that night'' Dami supplied.

''You're right, don't tell me you've been sitting there, watching me sleep.''

''Ofcourse, what does it look like?'' she asked, smiling. ''I knew you
were tired, that's why i just let you sleep but don't worry, I kept
myself busy with a book here, probably your sister's cuz it has
Maryann written on it.''

''Yeah, that reminds me, I need to call them and also tell them about
dad's health, although it's nothing to worry about,''

''Ok'' she replied with a shrug.

''Is dad awake?''

''I haven't gone out of this room since and again if he's awake, your
sister and mum would have come in here to tell you.''

''Yeah, that's right. Let me use the bathroom, I will be right back''
K.C replied, climbing down from his bed.

He left for the bathroom and soon came out with a smile on his face.

''I can see you feel so much better!'' Dami said with a note of sarcasm.

''Yeah, let's go. I want to eat, I'm hungry.''

''Alrigh...'' A loud scream from the sitting room interrupted her.
They both looked at each other before running out as fast as their
legs could carry them.

''K.C, Dami, dad is not moving, he is not breathing'' his sister screamed.

''Are you sure?'' K.C asked, hoping it isn't true.

''Yes, I am'' Chidiebere replied, crying loudly.
'K.C, your dad is not breathing'' his mum screamed, shaking him violently.

''Dami, please, please check him, is he breathing?'' Chidiebere
pleaded, with tears streaking down her cheeks.

Dami leaned down and felt the older man's pulse.

''Dami, what is it?'' K.C asked.

''My daughter, what is it? Is he still alive?'' K.C's mum asked.

''Ehm..Ehm...Mama...mama...'' she stuttered not knowing what to say or
rather where to begin.

''D, say something, what's wrong?'' K.C asked.
