Screen ON Time Challenge (SOT) by Hhenryy: 2:27pm On Apr 16, 2018

It's no longer news that what majority of Nigerians desire most in smartphones is long lasting batteries due to the epileptic power supply in most parts of the country. (camera quality comes second)

For this reason, I have decided to put up a fun game to identify the phone with the longest lasting battery.
The best parameter for this measurement is the screen on time (SOT). Although this parameter is also dependent on other factors such as running apps or other features like wifi connection or 2G/3G/4G data connection while the screen is ON.
But it's still the best parameter to carry out the assessment.

Let's start........ What you need to do

1.) upload the Screenshot of your power usage under settings--->battery and make sure your usage graph is clearly visible for us to see, So that we can see the battery drop slope, and identify if you have at anytime charged it. any rise and fall discredits your information

2) click on screen to get the screen ON time stat. Upload the screen shot.

3) Tell us your phone name and model

NB;- we want to see the statistics provided by your phone since last full charge. (100%)

I want to believe this is going to be fun, and at the end of the day, we will all see who wins. This might also assist people looking for smartphones with long lasting batteries to buy.

Below is my own stats, been browsing on 3G, wifi, playing games etc with a screen ON time of 12hrs plus. And I'm left with 19%. I can estimate it will give me 13 hrs plus screen ON time before going down completely.

The device is infinix hot 5 (X559C)

CC: lalasticlala

Updates........

It's currently a draw between hot 5 and redmi 4X. Both delivering 12hrs plus with 19/20% battery remaining. Let's see the beast that will beat the record.

Itel and Tecno 5000mah users should come and take the test

Who in Nigeria would be dumb enough to play this game without any reward.. When the power sector is poor, no offense but I prefer you put a reward to it so we can be compensated for the power waste, right now am charging my L9 plus with gen, not going to waste precious power

Looks good @6hrs SOT with still 47% left. But your graph is not visible. Therefore your stat is not acceptable

Did you say power waste? It seems you didn't go through my instructions, unless you are the type that charge phones at every available opportunity, and that is very bad for your battery health.

Give it a full charge and let it discharge to atleast 20% before you plug it again, that's the golden rule of maintaining good battery health. If you are using this rule, then getting the stats I requested for wouldn't be an issue.

okay boss, I thought it's one of those challenges which you have to keep your phone on from 100% to 1%

Nah, if you check my graph, you will see it is broken. That's the point i switched it OFF at midnight. It doesn't affect the SOT reading. It will pause and continue reading when you switch ON your phone.

But that graph is very important so that we can see the battery drop slope. Any rise and fall discredits your stats. It means you have charged.

Hummn, this is impressive....

Its a draw between hot 5 and redmi 4X. But I think hot 5 still has an edge in battery optimization over redmi 4X, considering the fact that it has a bigger screen (5.5) with a slightly smaller battery (4000mah) as compared with the 5.0 inch screen and 4100mah battery on the redmi 4X.
Theoretically, the hot 5 is expected to consume more battery and a lesser SOT. But here we have a draw wink

Wrong info sir. It's better to charge from time to time than to charge to 100%

Na you sabi, if you like Charge every second...

I was once a victim by not following the Golden rule. Then I used to charge at every available opportunity. My battery didn't last upto one year when it started bulging and couldn't hold a charge anymore.

It's a simple rule, look at those elderly people that seldom charge their phones (since they only make use of basic functions so their battery doesn't drain quickly) now tell me how often they encounter battery issues and the need to change their batteries?

I know a Nokia phone dad bought in 2006, ( 12yrs ago) i still have the battery and it's still as strong as ever. Why? Because he doesn't charge often. at times he may go 1 week without charging it.

On a final note, whether you like it or not, rechargeable batteries have a fixed number of charge & discharge cycles. The average smartphone battery has about 400cycles. Thus the higher the charge/discharge rate, the lower the life expectancy of your battery.
Now do the maths with the high frequency rate you are using and let's see how long your battery will last. I can bet you won't get more than 1yr of good service if you charge at that rate.

Just 1hr 27min SOT and your battery is already down to 63%

Scientifically proven facts cannot be compared to isolated personal experience. It is proven that the best range to leave a battery at is either 20/30 - 80/90%, which by extension means that charging to 100% is bad for the battery.

Another thing pointed out in the research is that it is better to do frequent top-ups than doing deep charging (0-100%), and that battery shouldn't be charged to 100% except once in a month for the purpose of calibration.

I have read all that before. I see nothing bad in giving your phone a full charge provided you are not the type that charge at every available opportunity.

The 100% mark was not created by mistake. The only reason why it may not be advisable is because it's very common for people waiting to get a full charge to leave it a little longer after hitting the 100% mark out of forgetfulness. This puts the battery under undue stress and shortens the lifespan significantly.

If you are the type that charge once in 3days or twice in a week, then hitting the 100% mark is not a bad idea.

It also depends on screen brightness. For example I get 4 and half hours SOT on my phone but my brightness right now is on 63% and when outside it's around 80%. Why not, my phone has qhd display so why won't I enjoy that beautiful display. Meanwhile my wife's hot 4 pro has a 720p display and 4,000 mAh battery, she gets up to 8-9 hours SOT but her phone has a 720p display and her brightness is always on zero. Yes 0% and when outside on 20-30%. When u increase the brightness on a 720p IPS display phone past 30% it becomes very hurting to the eyes, meanwhile for qhd, rhe higher the brightness the better.

Any flagship phone with 5-6 hours of SOT is considered ok.

The statistics below shows the SOT of some phones while surfing continuously on 4G until they run out of battery juice. Although they have different battery capacities Some have 5000mah battery. Check out the list and see how yours compare.

There is also a video here showing how Samsung S7 edge and S6 edge gave 12hrs plus SOT on continuous surfing. Which according to the uploader is a world record SOT. I guess he has not come across Zenfone 3 zoom. But he can be forgiven considering the differences in battery capacity.

I also saw the current standby time which is about 1 day 8hrs 44min. But I'm not interested in that parameter. Most phones can achieve that and even more.

My own theoretical standby time according to infinix is over 800hrs which equates to about 33days. But like I said, we are not interested in that parameter.

You forget to mention you put off your hot 5 all thru the night, while his 4x runs all night & day long. That impacts on his battery life too. I bet if he did same he'll have a longer SOT.

Also his graph stops at 20% while yours go all the way to zero %. If he continued recording, certainly yours won't come close to the 4x.

Talking about screen sizes, if a user of redmi note 4 which also uses same 5.5 screen size as your infinix hot 4 takes up the challenge, your infinix will easily be beaten.

Not trying to create a brand war but the xiaomi which uses a Snapdragon 625 has already gained global recognition for its battery efficiency, no contest.

This your write-up got me furious. Do you understand SOT analytics at all And you don't pay attention to details either. it is obvious you didn't go through the details in the thread because if you did, you won't come-up with this silly write-up

you are just regurgitating and I hate repeating my self. Putting ON/OFF the phone does not affect SOT reading. I have explained that to one guy here. The SOT will pause and continue reading whenever your screen is ON. If i sleep off without switching the phone OFF, the SOT will not read either
And I hope you know that standby power consumption is very minimal? If i leave it ON throughout the night, the maximum i usually lose is 1%. But I like switching off my phone at night unless i forget.

And who told you that mine went down to zero? are you blind? Or can't you see that my battery was on 19% when I took the screenshot? Or you don't know how to read the corresponding graph
