How come our locally made rice is too expensive compare to the imported

Locally grown or produced and not made in Nigeria. The title should change.

These are facts.

Note the year and be cured from your hate filled ignorance.

1) Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), re-introduced the ban of rice import through its land borders in 2016, as an effort to boost local rice production in Nigeria.

2)The Federal Government mandated the CBN to release N40 billion for the “Anchor Borrowers Programme” (ABP) for Rice farmers. The program was designed to assist Small Scale farmers to increase the production and supply of feedstock to agro-processors.

3) The Anchor Borrowers Programme was launched in November 2016, said to have been pushed by 14 states of Kebbi, Sokoto, Niger, Kaduna, Katsina, Jigawa, Kano, Zamfara, Admawa, Plateau, Lagos, Ogun, Cross-Rivers and Ebonyi for rice and wheat farmers to advance their status from small holder farmers to commercial or large growers.

I never said he didn't facilitate it or push the faster production of rice on a larger scale. I simply stated that he didn't start it. Rice production has been on albeit on a small scale level.

You my friend are the ignorant one.

Believe this at your own peril

Nigeria is yet a food sufficient nation especially rice. Rice are still being imported massively and all they do is to repackage the rice and make it look like we are still the one producing it. Even the rice being impound by the customs are part of the ones they repackage too.

It is when they leave power, secrets will be revealed.

That's my point exactly. Who encouraged it? Who ensured it stopped being small scale? Who decided to shift our gaze from oil to agriculture?

Was it the "ineffectual buffoon"?

There is nothing that is instant. It always follows a process. Growth itself is gradual but needs to be encouraged to be constant.

If it is sustained then we would be self reliant when it comes to rice. Its all a matter of time

The lazy idiotic pigs of Biafra will not like to work, what they know is importation to kill our economy

When Olam started the Rice Farm & Mill in 2016, the same people posted nonsense here. We have Dangote farms & others who joined hands with the government to invest locally in Agriculture when foreign reserve was depleted & no savings for 8 yrs. How come these people are now remembering GEJ who did nothing to save billions of dollars used for rice importation.

How much is imported rice at Shoprite? Lazy youth indeed. Even if imported rice cost 15K at Shoprite of what benefit is it to average Nigerians? What Nigerian pays for the price difference between locally produced & imported rice is far more than 100% price of the imported rice. Thousands of people are engaged & paid salary at the farms & mills. Millions of Nigerians are indirectly beneficiary of those industries in term of service providers to those industries. We have trainings & lessons learnt experiences which will lead to greater production & ultimately reduction in price as competition increases.

Finally billions of dollars of oil money used to import rice can be channelled to other areas.

Did u not notice the word "re-introduced"
Have you also forgotten that PMB said he did not have money to buy presidential ticket and that he borrowed money from farmers to buy ticket?
I can search for that thread here on NL and show u the comments people made on concerning that.
Just to correct u, GEJ introduced it kpom kwem!

But it's expensive.
When other producers come up stream the price will gradually fall. Government has to do a lot more to reduce the cost of production by providing some basic infrastructure that will drive these industries, it will take some time for all these to happen.

Buhari started recession? Recession that started since 2012 and peaked in 2016. Some of you self.. maybe you think recession is like noodles that takes 5 mins to get prepared. Where were you when Okonjo was borrowing money to pay salaries in 2015? God help una.

Killer herdsmen started in 2015? God! It only became extremely popular when a known Fulani man turned president + sensational news coverage from the media for selfish gain. Both didn't start in 2015, get educated, research and stop being lazy.

Sirjamo:
OK o. But he started recession, boko Haram, killer herdsmen and all the problems Nigeria is facing abi?

Was it the "ineffectual buffoon"?

It was during the regime of the so called " ineffectual buffoon " that Nigeria became the world's largest producer of cassava, reduced it's agricultural import level by over 40% and facilitated the supply of subsidized fertilizers to over 14 million farmers across the country.

Whether you like it or not, the agricultural sector witnessed a boost under GEJ's tenure so don't just sit there and insinuate that he did nothing.
