B.sc In Biochemistry & Masters In Pharmacy Can They Go Together? by Raylight2(m): 1:59pm On Aug 26, 2010
I'm currently seeking admission into one of the universities in Nigeria. I actually wanted to go for pharmacy but due to some reasons, I had to chose Biochemistry while filling my Jamb. My question now is 'after getting the B.Sc in Biochemistry, will I be able to do my Masters in Pharmacy? if possible please let me know.

Thanks

I really want to go into drug production itself. I hope it's 100% possible because someone said I can only do pharmaceutical chemistry in pharmacy as a biochemist. If this is true, what is the duty of a pharmaceutical chemist in a pharmaceutical industry.

I dont know but i think it deals with formulating drug compounds.

You can have a Master's degree in pharmaceutical chemistry with a B.Sc in Biochemistry. But note that doesn't make you a pharmacist. The options for you in the pharmaceutical industry is basically that of quality control or marketing of OTC drugs. Another option if you are so keen on being a pharmacist is to finish your course in Biochemistry and apply for direct entry to the Bachelor of Pharmacy degree.
I hope I have been of help smiley

Pharmaceutical Chemists work in the research and development area of business of the pharmaceutical industry. They are actively involved in the discovery, design, development of active pharmaceutical ingredients into finished medicinal products. They are highly skilled professionals who apply both theoretical and practical knowledge in drug discovery and development. Approx 55% of pharmaceutical chemists working in the pharmaceutical industry are PhD holders. Their major objective is to ensure that medicinal products are not released for sale or used by the patient until they have been ascertained to meet their required standards of QUALITY, EFFICACY & SAFETY. In the Pharmaceutical industry, you hear of such groups as Drug Metabolism & Pharmacokinetics, Early Development Group, Drug Discovery Group, Formulation & Analytical team. All these groups are composed of highly motivated pharmaceutical chemists who work tirelessly to support the development of medicinal products.

M. Pharm is a clinical program that is offered in a department called Clinical pharmacy and pharmacy practice of Faculty of pharmacy. Only pharmacists are eligible for a postgraduate or specialist program in the department. As a biochemist you can apply for different PG program in other departments such as Pharmacology, Pharmchem, pharmaceutics, Pharm Mcb, Pharmscognosy. Except case are;
1 only Pharmacists, doctors and sometimes Nurses are admitted for Msc and PhD of Clinical Pharmacology. But you are very fit for Msc in any other areas pharmacology.
2. Coming in for other departments in the faculty, you will be admitted but only pharmacists can be awarded PhD of a Department as a whole. E.g in dept of Pharmacognosy, you can have your Msc in Pharmacognosy but at PhD level you won't be award PhD in Pharmacognosy but a (pharmacist can have it) you will be award PhD in Phytomedicine, Ethnomedicine, Herbal or indigenous Medicines etc in their sub specialty.
3. With the new degree; PharmD (i.e doctor of pharmacy), the PCN has ordered that only pharmacist or a PhD holders as at that time will teach Pharmacy students ..... And very few non pharmacist make it up at the pharmaceutical industry which is now available for them.
4. In the pharmaceutical markets (not restricted to pharmacist. Any discipline can work here) which is now very competitive as well as tedious for non pharmacists because of company targets and others. But only a pharmacist can Medrep by law some drugs such as upper class poisons.
5. Nigeria pharmaceutical industries are very bad, poor and usually less pay. Some basically do compounding and can't avoid three full time young pharmacist talk less of a pg holder.
But having pg in any part of pharmacy departments gives you an upper hand in Pharmaceutical Lab which is a multidisciplinary society and respect all scientist opinion based on level of study and evidence.
Hope this helps.

You can't have Msc in Pharmacy as a whole. Just like you can't have Msc in Medicine as a whole.
An MBBS holder can not be a Pharmacist by doing PG in any department of pharmacy so also a Pharmacist can not be a doctor by doing PG in any of the Medical department.
