It's 25 years since the BBC World Service annoyed me.

I muted the TV and listened to commentaries on the BBC World Service Radio. The commentators were clearly supporting the Zambians. I don't know if it was because the Zambians were the underdogs or if it was because of the plane crash, but it annoyed me.

It also gave me greater satisfaction when we eventually won the match and the cup.

Nigeria 2-1 Zambia.

There was sentiments on the side of the Zambians, who had lost their team to an ill-fated air crash and had to rebuild another team for the tournament. They had a lot of help from the Brits, John Fashanu helped them to recruit the coach.

This was the return leg in Johannesburg.

Complete Football's reporter reported that all the South Africans he met kept asking him about Ricky (Richard Owubokiri) and they were relieved when they heard that he was not in the team. They felt that he was Nigeria's danger man. I was wondering if they had never heard of Yekini.

Stephen Keshi later told a BBC reporter that he thought that he would die during this game. The match was played at the FNB Stadium at a high altitude and the Eagles did not have any altitude training before the game. Keshi said that he had difficulty breathing and he kept remembering what happened to Samuel Okwaraji.

The feed that I watched at the time was a joint production between the NTA and the SABC and Akinloye Oyebanji of the NTA was the summariser, while a South African was the commentator.

Yekini scored a goal in this game and I still cannot understand why it was disallowed. Maybe you can explain it to me.

The South African media reacted as if they had won the game, even though it was a draw.

South Africa 0-0 Nigeria.

This happened when 80% or 90% of the team were local players and even some were recruited from eleruku field if u know what i mean but if not, ask that guy with d mic gan gan or better still, u can searcj for this on google; I picked oliseh from gutter, by westerhof. He did not intend to dehumanize oliseh but was only expressing how it feels to build a team of such magnimous and fantastic outing/performance.
They tagged them from Grass to Grace!

1. Daniel Amokachi was discovered at Government College Kaduna
2. Sunday Oliseh was discovered in Festac. He barely started his pre-degree in LASU then

All true.

Let me add one more game to that list

Oct 1993 Algeria v Nigeria - final qualifying game for USA94 world cup

That was the highest tension I have ever experienced in any game. The final 10 mins with the game at 1 - 1 and the Algerians attacking us non stop like their lives depended on the game. Those 10 mins felt like 10 hours. If they had scored and beaten us 2-1 we would have been eliminated and there would have been no famous Class of 94 to talk about now.

I remember watching as a 13 yr old kid as Westerhof was frantically screaming at the referee that we had played the full 90mins and to blow the final whistle. The man was jumping and screaming, begging!

In the end we qualified for our first ever world cup, there was not a dry eye on the pitch remember keshi crying tears of joy and emotions in his interview.

History is made of moments like those.

Good event by NFF.... If you (ever) play street football or any other one, you will understand what Oliseh said about 'Fight' with Okocha.. Mehn, there is always that one player that loves to dribble, loves holding the ball and annoys everybody including the opponent.. Sometimes, you will be tempted to join the opponents to attack him too..

Bros, I feel you here. I remember Taju in primary school and Tosin in Secondary School. These two guys played as if dribbling was more than scoring.

This game was very important to me because it helped me overcome a bereavement.

Richard Owubokiri was the highest goal scorer in the Portuguese league in 1992 and Rashidi Yekini was the highest goal scorer in Portugal in 1993/1994, so I wanted to see both of them play together.

Many Nigerians believed that Owubokiri's style did not suit the Super Eagles, but I wasn't so sure, so I wanted to see him play.

This was the first ever match between Nigeria and South Africa. It took place at the National Stadium in Lagos on October 10, 1992.

Owubokiri scored the first goal via a header.

Samson Siasia extended our lead.

Rashidi Yekini then scored 2 goals to extend the lead. Samson Siasia controlled an incredibly high ball in order to provide the assist for the 4th goal. It ended

Nigeria 4-0 South Africa.

I can't remember and I still don't understand how Rikky (Richard Owubokiri) got excluded from the team subsequently.

It was the same issue with Jonathan Akpoborire in 1998. I felt that Owubokiri should have gone to USA 94 and Akpiborire should have gone to France 98, but many Nigerians claimed that their style of play did not suit the Super Eagles (meanwhile they were banging in goals at their clubsides).

Wonderful speech by Oliseh.

They couldn't have picked a better person to give it.

That team remains the best Nigeria has ever produced.

I agree that a street should be named after the squad in every street, no matter if the street is fine or not.

Kudos to NFF for this honour.

Sad that Keshi, Uche Okafor, Rashidi Yekini, Thompson Oliha, and Wilfred Agbonavbare are no longer with us.

the team achieved the highest FIFA ranking position ever achieved by an African football team. (fifth) incidentally in April 1994 - exactly 25 years ago.

Clemens Westerhof and the Babangida regime deserve credible mentions for their role in developing the team.

Westerhof was given enough time to work on the team despite the early challenges the team faced.

Westerhof took charge of the team immediately after losing the Italia '90 World Cup ticket to Cameroon, taking the team to the finals of the Algiers '90 Nations Cup and four years later winning the Tunisia '94 Natiins Cup and getting the team into the second round of USA'94 World Cup.

The support for Westerhof and the team by the government, in my opinion, was unprecedented.

I don't recall Babangida being at the stadium to watch any match but Admiral Augustus Aikhomu was always there.

Air Commodore Emeka Omerua (the comedienne Chigurl's father) was sports minister then.

I've always wondered why airforce officers were put in charge of the sports ministry in those days - Omeruah, Bayo Alfa, Anthony Ikhazobor.

Thinking back now, I just realised that all of this was in the midst of the June 12 saga. Hmm...
I like that bold part. We have been avoiding true preparation and unbiased selection of players but expect our team to perform always. We may never see a team like that 94 team if we don't wake up.

True Okocha was one of the best dribblers Nigeria ever had, he could dribble the players one by one and even the goal keeper but he wasn't a great finisher. He would kick the ball wide over the post and spit away. In fact his saliva decorated every pitch he ever played on.

Guys I lie?
you no lie. the guy would always baloon the ball over the bar. abi make we extend the bar go up make he for fit score.

The problem is not allowing our young players to develop properly but promoting them to senior team immediately they show slight promise.

Another reason is politics and godfatherism in football. Lack of funds and mismanagement.

westerhof after inviting kanu nwankwo and taribo west for trials, actually dropped them, not for incompetence but for the fact according to the story we heard that "super eagles was for men and not for boys".

they were too young and inexperienced to make the team.

June 3rd, 1993 on the "beautiful" pitch of the National Stadium in Lagos (sarcasm).

The Algerians scored first.

Jay Jay Okocha equalised via a free kick goal.

Yekini put us in the lead via a goal off a corner (his technique was very good).

Yekini extended the lead via a spectacular goal (check out the angle from which he scored that goal!)

Daniel Amokachi scrambled in the fourth goal to make it

Nigeria 4-1 Algeria.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFQ06Wu1y3o

Spam bot banned me from posting since yesterday so I couldn't contribute to this.

Three (3) remarkable things for me about this match:

1. Oliseh the master passer
It was the first time I was seeing Sunday Oliseh play. one thing that struck me within a few touches of the ball he had was his tailored passes particularly to Yekini. I knew right away that he would be a gem in the team. Those passes later became characteristic of him for years to follow. His partnership with Yekini was wonderful until some years later when rumours started flying around that Yekini was deliberately being starved of passes because he was taking too much of the glory for the success of the team. I choose yo believe this was no more than rumours.

2. Okocha, the free kick specialist.
This match also gave me the conviction that we had discovered a free kick specialist in JJ. Of course, he became known for that annoying habit of smiling after ballooning the ball to "ojuelegba."

3. Yekini's tight angle goal
This goal was phenomenal. The only other times I recall seeing such were the final hat trick goal Kanu scored against Chelsea in the 1998-99 season when he was with Arsenal, Marco Van Basten's Euro '88 stunner, Roberto Carlos' goals for Madrid against Sporting in '98 and against France in '97, one by Maicon at the 2010 World Cup and another scored by another Brazilian (I think it was Serginho at Espana '82).
