Those familiar with the case said when the women fell, the man thinking that his wife was feigning injury, carried and laid her on the bed before leaving for the church vigil.
if the man truly thought that the wife was feigning injury, he won't even bother to carry and lay her on the bed. He would have left her there with words like "if you like sleep there, when you are ready, stand up" or something like that. But what do I even know? I wasn't there.

If what he claimed was true,for goodness sake there are ways to go about it without the sad and regrettable situation it landed to.
She was demanding her right and he ought to have given it to her and since he wasn't in the mood all he needed was to give her a little bit cuddling with the promise to give her the real one when he comes back from the night service.

There is a marked difference between carrying a dead weight and someone who is “pretending”. It did not bother him she was not breathing? Eyes did not flicker? She was floppy?
Like you said we are applying too much common sense to a sci-fi story.

That's manslaughter if his narration is true.

In the days when the Israelites were under Law if Moses, they had 6 cities of refuge.

If one commits manslaughter, the person could run into any of the cities of refuge and stay there. As long as he remains there, the relations of the victim or anyone seeking vengeance could not enter and hurt or even kill him.
