Women’s World Cup: Super Falcons qualify for Round of 16, to play Germany

Nigeria has qualified for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup Round of 16.

The Super Falcons had to wait until the final Group F fixtures, to see if they would progress.

The USA beat Sweden 2-0 and more importantly, Chile could only defeat Thailand 2-0, despite needing to win by three unreplied goals.

Nigeria has taken the last slot reserved for the best third-placed countries.

The other three are Brazil, China and Cameroon.

Nigeria lost 3-0 in their opener to Norway, before beating Korea Republic 2-0 to claim their first win.

However, Thomas Dennerby’s ladies lost 1-0 under controversial circumstances to hosts France in their last Group A match.

They will now face Germany in the next round on June 22.

FIFA Women's World Cup record
Profile of German women Team:

Germany are regular participants at FIFA Women's World Cups™ and have qualified for every edition so far. Alongside USA, they are the most successful women's team in the world, having won the European Championship eight times and the global showpiece twice - in 2003 and 2007. At the latter tournament they even lifted the trophy without conceding a single goal.

However, Germany arrive at France 2019 - their eighth outing at the Women's World Cup - with a point to prove. After all, they were eliminated in the last eight of the 2011 finals on home soil and also failed to qualify for the Women's Olympic Football Tournament at London 2012. In 2015 they lost to USA in the semi-finals and slipped to a 1-0 defeat after extra time against England in the play-off for third place.

The road to France
An early defeat at home to Iceland meant Germany were unable to qualify with a perfect record this time, as they had done for the 2007 and 2015 tournaments. Not only was the reverse the first time they had ever lost to Iceland, it was also the first time they had ever been beaten at home in a Women's World Cup qualifier. They won their remaining seven games and kept clean sheets throughout to finish top of Group 5.

The coach
Horst Hrubesch has been in charge on an interim basis since March 2018, when he replaced Steffi Jones at the helm. He has coached several of Germany's men's youth teams and won the U-19 European Championship in 2008 before steering the U-21s to continental glory a year later as caretaker coach. In 2016 he led Germany to a silver medal at the Men's Olympic Football Tournament in Rio de Janeiro. Martina Voss-Tecklenburg will take over once the France 2019 qualifying campaign finished. During her playing days, Voss-Tecklenburg won six German league titles, four domestic cups and also won the European Championship four times with Germany. She has continued to collect silverware as a coach and in addition to lifting the DFB Cup twice, she also won the UEFA Women's Cup, the precursor to UEFA Women's Champions League. In February 2012 she was appointed Switzerland head coach and guided the team to a maiden qualification for a Women's World Cup.

Nigeria Super Falcons have maintained their superb CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations record, winning the competition for the ninth time out of 11 attempts. The 2018 continental title came the Super Falcons’ way when they defeated South Africa 4-3 on penalties in a final that ended goalless after extra time.

But Super Falcons have been unable to dominate beyond Africa in such arenas as the FIFA Women's World Cup or the Olympic Games. The team has been to every World Cup since 1991, but managed just once to finish in the top eight. In 2003, the Super Falcons turned out to be the biggest disappointment of the first round, failing to score a single goal and losing all three Group A matches. They did little better in 2007, drawing only one of their Group B matches. However, they faced the group of death in both 2003 and 2007, grouped both times with rising Asian power North Korea, traditional European power Sweden, and a historic women's superpower in the USA.

But to plan for 2019 The Nigeria Football Federation hired Thomas Dennerby, a former Coach of the Sweden Women’s National Team, as the new Head Coach of the Super Falcons.

Dennerby coached the Swedish Women’s Senior Team between 2005 and 2012, during which the team pla­yed at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics and the 2007 and 2011 FIFA World Cup finals; winning bronze at the latter tournament.

He has already won the african women cup and the WAFU women cup.
