I just tire. Jay Z that sings alot of sex, money, weed, crack, has a closet full of Grammy nominations and the gong itself. So I don't know

It's not about what you sing about... It's about how well arranged and produced your album is... Vocal and lyrically content also come into deep consideration.

Tell me how many Nigerian musicians of today can actually scale through those...

2 Baba ke?...are u joking?..ass is the only naija star that is close.
Yet she’s never been nominated. Asa is overrated abeg. She sounds just like indie arie and Erika badhu. Nothing exceptional about her voice, her music arrangement or her lyrics.

They are light years apart. I listen to songs with deep soul piercing lyrics and meanings even if I don't understand the lyrics. Angelique gives to the world what Coldplay gives to us. Music isn't just words and sounds. Music is a frequency, a vibration, an energy, a force that links the mundane with the ethereal, that is the level her music takes me to whenever I am listening to her album. You cannot just not feel a jolt when you listen to songs like Babalao, Naima, Afirika, We are one et al. Fongbe is a soulful language and it pains me that my wife can't speak it despite her ancestral roots is from the same region as Angelique's. (she was born and raised in Lagos though). I would have loved for my wife to translate her songs to me.
Spoken like a true artist. Music doesn't have a language because it speaks to directly to the soul.

African youths especially Nigerians does not recognize talent, the standard is extremely low in this country that's why we have people like naira Marley gaining recognition in a society that's supposed to be civilized.
Angelique only has 200k followers on Instagram with her numerous Grammy wins.

The Celia album is entirely about Celia Cruz. For those who know Angelique very well will admit that the album is a totally different project from her usual thing. I was thrilled she could do "perfect salsa" and I never knew she could sing in Spanish too, even a Peruvian song.
We truly have an Angel(ique) of light from Africa, whenever they say Africa is a dark continent, I will tell them that.

Pele wins over C.ronaldo. politics Sha! In this Grammy Awards, an old generation legend of music was used to kickout out new generation when it comes to Africa, but as for America, they encourage new generation artist by making them win. @burnaboy @Grammys #GRAMMYAwards2020 #GRAMMYLive

Are you kidding me right now...

So, when Madonna, Robert Plant, Viola Davis, Gary Oldman, etc, are winning artistic awards over far younger contemporaries, what new generation are they encouraging??!...

You mean awards should be given based on childish sentiments instead of artistic delivery, content, and lyrical quality... In what way did Celia not outdo African Giant in all the above??!...

You guys need to learn objectivity... Don't come here forming unnecessary patriotism.

BTW, I'm probably as young as you are.

Hey the clueless,

Angelique Kidjo winning the Grammy beating Burna Boy is still a WIN-WIN for Burna Boy and Nigeria. Why?

Because her FATHER is originally from Iseyin in Oyo State, while her mother is from Abeokuta in Ogun State. She confirmed this herself live.

Sentiment and bias arguments

Fela's songs are trash in my own opinion. He was just popular with Nigerians because he stood to oppose the military governmentand was very controversial building a large followers cult in the process. But musically, technically, even majek fashek is better. I can't stand fela's music for 20 mins.

Fela was, still is, one of the best instrumentalists in the world... His name is among legends like:

Jimmy Hendrix
Hugh Masekela
Louis Armstrong
Eric Clapton
Paul McCartney
Freddie Mercury
Yanni
Kenny G
Miles Davis
Bob Dylan
Etc...

You guys know nothing about music... Not your fault!!! tongue

A well deserved win to Kidjo.
The content of her songs are out of this world. She is a mix of Maya Angelou and Miriam Makeba.

Music lovers and genuine content critics like myself would have given up on the credibility and essence of the Grammy Awards if another undeserving artiste had won this.

Sentiments aside, Nigeria is yet to replicate another Fela Kuti in the global music sphere.

Fela is the only Nigerian deserving of a Grammy.
Because music is not about dancesteps or groupie trends but about a movement, a message, reawakening a consciousness and yet the melody from real musical instruments.
This is a reality lost on today's Nigerian artistes aside from Asá who still lacks in consistency.

As an African act, till your music can be accepted by Pastors, Imams, Youths, elders, global leaders, United Nations and illiterates, then you stand a chance of being an African Album or winning a foreign award in Music.

Nigeria and Nigerians must understand that club bangers do not translate to foreign awards in global music.
Seun kuti and tuface though

This is wrong. Beyoncé, Eminem, MJ's 'Thriller', Taylor Swift's '1989', and even Jay Z have all won the Grammy Album of the year award.

Most of the songs on their albums are club bangers, and widely accepted by younger generations. I can't imagine any of Jay Z's, and Eminem songs that will will be accepted by religious leaders.

Most educated folks don't even understand Eminem's raps because he is always dissing the world and lacing his materials with double and triple entendres.

The category is much more beyond acceptability and the class or category of people your album resonate with. Kidjo will still return and win another next year as always.

Modified

To those quoting and 'correcting' me about Beyoncé, Em, Jay Z et al, about not winning the world album of the year. NOTE THST I DIDN'T MENTION THE WORLD ALBUM OF THE YEAR BUT ALBUM OF THE YEAR. The criteria remains the same for both while the reach is the only difference.

I cited them as winners of similar categories with club bangers as a response to the fellow who stated that your album must appeal to clerics, religious bodies and the UN to win the category.

baba, u talk sense jare
no be just forming wise elders like these other fellows talking about religious acceptance and other bullshit
