No More Joy In Driving by EgunMogaji2: 3:33pm On Aug 02, 2020
I’m sad to report that Nigeria and her drivers within have taken the joy of driving out of me as far as driving in Nigeria is concerned. I have now resorted to searching for a driver.

That is all.

I’m just done with the lack of respect for the rule of law as regards to driving.

Once Covid travel restrictions are over then I’ll go tour Rwanda and Gambia for a potential relocation. Nigerians are ungovernable.

Boss I feel your pain. Driving here has given me this fantasy about becoming the FRSC boss. If I get that job Nigerians go just kill me last last cos they no go fit understand me. I will enforce even lane departure and lack of turn signal with hefty fine and imprisonment. Lack of road worthiness = firing squad. People here drive like everyone else is their enemy from village smh. I've given up on driving with righteousness cos people, commercial bus, keke and bike in particular, go bash you out of spite come begin beg. Now I just consider my time plus panel beater and painter expenses.

Not true.

I have never heard of one Nigerian leaving because of motoring challenges.

If I can’t live in Ibadan then Nigeria is not for me.

lolz.
That's what Nigerian drivers do to you.
From the late 90s till 6yrs ago I used to so much love driving and was so good at it that all my father's friends and colleagues used to beg my pops to allow me drive them on sundry journies especially the 80km drive from Ebonyi to Enugu airport.
Then I came to Abuja and had d bad luck of having to pass the worst road in Abuja daily on my way to and from work in Keffi where you have ppl who should be in mental asylums on d wheels from Nyanya-Maraba-Masaka.
Didn't know when it happened but I found out I now preferred joining colleagues or having som1 drive me in my car.
Of cos,I bought a smaller car for d daily commute cos them done bash my Benz tire grin
I still blame govt and road safety, vio etc sha cos inside Abuja town and even d other 2 exit points viz airport road and Kubwa express, you see drivers who comport themselves like they're in a church service.
But come towards Nyanya-Maraba-Masaka, na bedlam. The issue has even been compounded recently with the entrance of Keke drivers and their lunacy in a trunk A highway.

A friend of mine who still drives his father's numerous cars once jocularly told me I drive like a grandfather cos I was taking my time to avoid the lunatics in Utako and Jabi, I just laughed inside my mind and let him be.
Cos if these taxi drivers bash you,him and his colleagues will still gather and cajole you into letting go "habaa oga, this man no look like person wey done chop since this week, pity am naa".
For my friend,he just needs to go park the car at home, one of their numerous drivers or father's PAs will be the one to go work the car,the bills on his father's company.

Hahaha.
Here, they don't have any option than beg when they're at fault cos you don't know who is who.
The gentleman driving a weather-beaten Corolla could be a deputy director or 1 top man in d gizmos of Abuja bureacracy so if you do anyhow,he will apply the full weight of the law on you.Even the passenger making noise could be charged for actions likely to cause breach of peace, you go find yourself before a magistrate in the next 2hrs grin
So ppl including law enforcement are usually careful in such situations cos Abuja get a lot of casually dressed big men in even more casual cars or their boys/subordinates/children etc who can summon the CP to d accident scene in minutes

Hehehehehe.
I remembered once having a spat with you cos you advocated for Biafra agitators to be shot grin
Glad you are back full time and have had time to notice Nigeria as presently constituted is irredeemable.
I'm sure it's a combination of many other factors including electricity, ease of doing business, bribery and corruption, perennial bad roads etc that's making you think of running away from your fatherland.
Those who are among d few looters or lucky in their enterprise might say otherwise in their short sightedness but that's d honest truth.
Ppl who live in the Nyanya-Maraba-Masaka axis of Abuja have to spend 2-3 hrs on their way home everyday on a less than 20km stretch cos the commercial drivers there don't have d discipline to not park on the road while discharging or carrying new passengers.
The law enforcement agents on duty there further exploit the situation by collecting 50 naira per erring vehicle.
But once in a while when one big man gets caught up in that traffic and complains, traffic suddenly becomes free flowing for the next 1 week, then, back to status quo.

1) I’ve never singled out any protestors to be shot. I believe in defending law abiding citizens. If any group of Nigerians are committing a crime then they need to be dealt with decisively. Please stop trying to paint me as anti Biafran. I’m not.

2) I never said Nigeria is irredeemable. I said Nigerians are ungovernable.

3) I was very clear to post that I’m considering moving specifically because Nigerians made me loose the joy I have in driving. It’s really that singularly simple. Please don’t lump me into economic migrants.

You’re about the only person that got this post.

It’s specifically about driving. One of the things that is centric to my happiness.

It’s not about NEPA - I own a renewable energy company, it’s not about water - combined I have four boreholes, it’s not about government specifically - I’m retired so interaction with them is limited.

It’s singularly about Nigerian drivers and their lack of proper driving etiquette.

If everyone left, what will be become of Nigeria?

This is our country and the desired change must start from you and I. At some point, we do break the rules when driving, beating traffic, tailgating, driving cars which are not road worthy, not maintaining one's road lane e.t.c

Until we accept to change, Nigeria will continue as it is.

bro, this thing is getting worse everyday and people like me n you have been wailing without response from the people who it's their job to enforce order.
Lemme give you an example, when I started work in Keffi Nasarawa state about 7yrs ago,on that Nyanya-Maraba-Masaka we only had to battle with bus and taxi drivers who would overtake you but brake and swerve sharply immediately after cos some1 by d roadside raised his hand and to him, that's a potential passenger.
It is inarguable Nigeria and especially Abuja population keeps increasing due to increasing birth rate & d unrest in most of the north.
Now,KEKE DRIVERS HAVE JOINED THE FRAY IN A ROAD THAT WAS RECENTLY LISTED AS AMONG THE 3 BUSIEST ROADS IN THE COUNTRY.
Now who do you blame for that?Okada dey ooo,all in a trunk A highway.
I once tweeted both FRSC and VIO,even with DM,both read and never even acknowledged my tweet.
And you might not know what happens underground to maintain this status quo.
All these bus, taxi, okada, keke union make heavy contributions to the tune of hundreds of millions with which they bribe IGPs,CPs,FRSC & VIO top men etc to maintain this status quo.
So leave, the problem is from our leaders ,not us.Abroad if not for the fear of punishment, ppl will still break the law with impunity.

The straw that broke the camels back.

Yesterday I was coming home in very light traffic.

There are cars parked on both sides making the road narrow. Still passable with diligence.

The car in my front wanted to turn left so he had to wait for oncoming traffic to give way. They didn’t give way and behind us the oncoming traffic was also blocked. Now no one is moving and here comes the inferno of vehicle horns.

The minute we started inching forward some maniac Okada rider managed to wedge himself and his bike in between my truck and a parked car. You would expect a sane individual to apologize but he asked me if I was blind.

If this was the average lunatic doped up commercial rider I would not be fazed since those are on a suicidal mission. But this is an older and well dressed gentleman.

If this man didn’t know the proper riding protocols then it’s a lost cause.

The words in bold shows that you are either ignorant of the root causes of the problems or simply living in denial.

Why do you need those in authority/law enforcement to tell you to do the right thing?

Our leaders have their issues but what about you and I? There are things we can choose to do right or choose to do wrongly. Do we need Traffic Wardens to still man traffic lights? Do we need FRSC/VIO/Police to man the roads to ensure that you and I always maintain our lanes, use indicators when trying to overtake the next vehicle, stop tailgating e.t.c?

Travel to Kenya and Rwanda and see that their citizens and visitors are law abiding.

Unfortunately, it is the norm here. Some Nigerians have no regard for road traffic rules.

So because of crazy drivers and dangerous driving epa has decided to skip countries?

Here in 9ja that to drive is sweeter than yankee because you can go fast or slow or jam or scratch anywhere and anytime you like? Highest Na beg go solve the matter last last

You want to go to where you will be traveling from Lagos to Abuja and speed limit will be like 100kmph ?? The one wey your engine go just dey make “vooooooo” from ore to Lokoja? No speed up, no slow down, no porthole to dodge and no broken down Dangote truck to total into (if you no shine ya eye sha)

Epa just sell some properties, build helipad in Ibadan and buy helicopter. Trust me it’s more enjoyable than driving (although more expensive than skipping countries)

but look on the brighter side, you’re now flying over all the morons who were making your country ‘unlivable’ for you grin grin

I especially like the countries that you used for example. Some will leap to start comparing to USA and UK. But many African countries are now getting it.

So true, this happened to me, bus driver hit me, the car was barely 3 months old since I got it so it was still a pretty baby boo, hadn't come to conclusions on what to do with the bus driver, then one particular passenger on board wan come start the gang up thing, me went crazy cos I knew how much it would cost to fix my car, last last I had to let the driver go

Driving on Nigerian roads is a challenge on its own

*People swerve in and out of lanes like they're the only ones on the roads
*Impatience
*Driving right at the center of the road on a 2 lane road
*Stopping with reckless abandon anyhow and anywhere they like

It's just too much, Nigerians are just too lawless and un-accommodating(not sure there's a word like this but it's just the word that describes what I want to say)
