Which Version Of The Bible Do You Read And Why? by sookoo: 4:37pm On Sep 28, 2011
I prefer the King James version! When my friends tease me about my preference for the 'thou, thee, whither' stuff,I jokingly tell them its the 'Authorized version'!.
Why?King James is easy to memorize and and 'confess'!I started reading it years ago and Simply cannot imagine reading other versions regularly, though I do read them at times for references!

Any of the Catholic versions. Because they were translated and interpreted under the supervision of the one Church Jesus founded.

The church Jesus Christ founded is not the Catholic church.

The Catholic church has at it's head the POPE.

The true Church has at it's head Christ Jesus.

The catholic church is just a pagan roman institution, a remnant of the pagan empire.

Catholic versions of the bible can be perilous to your health.

You try for KJV. I mainly use the NIV for its simplicity and ease of understanding. I also like The Message Bible (TM), New Living Translation (NLT) and the Contemporary English Version (CEV) - all for the same reason. I do try to frequently refer to the KJV every now and then, sometimes you just need to hear and 'feel' the authority that translation carries.

We are talking about bible versions right ?

And if I were to say I do not read the catholic version, that is equal to derailment

Okay I understand !

The catholic bible has 71 books not 66 as per the standard. The 5 additional books will make for very good historical reading but they are certainly not scripture !!

Tobit
Judith
Baruch
1 Maccabees
2 Maccabees

Otherwise I have problems with the core 66 books of real scripture .

You have plenty of threads to discuss your objections to all things catholic. Please respect another persons thread as you would like them to respect yours. If you have any other comment please post it on the Mod/Complaint thread so this one can continue in peace. https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-505782.0.html

I have almost given up on Nairaland and their ability to wrench comments out of context. Is this a Nigerian thing.

Okay, lets see the statement that prompted my reaction.

Any of the Catholic versions. Because they were translated and interpreted under the supervision of the one Church Jesus founded.
I have no problem with this statement except of course the bolded part which falsely called the catholic church the one true church. If this is your bone of contention, I consider it as a joke.
Re: Which Version Of The Bible Do You Read And Why? by Sweetnecta: 3:18pm On Sep 29, 2011
my dear JeSoul uses 4 [same text book, different authors] and another to make 5.

What exactly are you talking about? In all your posts on this thread, you have not once addressed the actual topic. Need I say more? No one is saying you cannot address the contents of another post, but the direction you're going is GOING to derail this otherwise nice thread with catholic vs. non-catholic.

I will hold you to your word that quote being your "final comment in here". I will have to delete any others that are off-topic. You can always reach me on the mod thread. Thanks.

Who said that the 66 were original and the others weren't? When were the others added if they were not in the original bible.

KJV. . .preferred. Used to read the NIV until I read the preface and realized the subtlety of it's translators in watering down the true meaning of certain key bible verses.

@Jesoul: The Message is a terrible (in more sense than one) translation.

Honestly, I think its mostly about education, perspective and background.

I find the Message Bible (along with the NLT) extremely helpful in being able to paraphrase otherwise wordier, less user-friendly words - especially for a much younger generation. I do conceed that in the process of paraphrasing and 'dumbing down' (bad word choice I know) some of the 'power' is lost in the process. Which I why I still make a point to read the KJV and oftentimes do side-by-side comparisons for maximum effect. I could not read the KJV everyday. I'm not used to that flavor of english and hence do myself a disservice - it is probably different for you and many others and I salute of all una smiley.

As for the NIV . . . I have heard and read many objections like you have raised above. Honestly, I have found no major fault of damning quality . . . perhaps you have evidence to the contrary? smiley

Why generalize?

In my days at UI , education standards were high in Nigeria. However in recent times it has fallen to an all time low.

No need arguing about this  , worldwide stats prove it.

But I am aware that Nigerians are some of the most learned people in the world. This cannot be negated.

KJ version of course
Re: Which Version Of The Bible Do You Read And Why? by Nobody: 5:24pm On Sep 30, 2011
Let me come in here, before this gets out of hand and the hijackers have a field day.

There are over 25,000 original manuscripts of the new testament bible which clearly when analysed  exactly match and verify each other. An example manuscript below.

They only differ in writing style , punctuations etc. But in content they match.

Secondly these original scripts in Greek have been used by various scholars and experts over the years to translate directly into the English Language that best fits that generation.

So while the Kings James bible is good for reference, many people cannot understand the archaic language. To now coerce Christians into using only this version amounts to legalism.

The NLT , NIV , ESV etc bibles were all translated from original manuscripts and are suitable for reading . For study bibles NIV and the NJKV are recommended.

When some ignorant people say that we have different bible versions, what they actually mean is that we have different versions of English bibles. What they fail to grasp is that the content is the same but the grammar and style are different.

Let me state 2 examples below , one in KJV and the other in NLT. See for yourself and let us know which one is more easily understood. Passage taken from 2 Timothy 3:1-4

King James example
"This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;"

NLT example
"You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. "

For a modern man in the 21st century , the NLT version will be more relevant in the context of English used.

I have the NIV, NLT,Good news and kings James Bible and used them interchangeably.

You can tell a lot about a Bible by what it produces. Does your Bible produce faith or doubt?

^^^^^^^^^^^^ Shouldn't the Bibles be exactle the same, regardless of who prints it and what version or time it is printed?
This statement of "producing faith" is a litmus against the Bibles.

Surprise. Surprise. The original manuscript is in Swahili, Kenya.

Do you think Yoruba people or anyone with ability to think will accept the Swahili manuscript as truly authentic and original?

This is the case with the New Testament as we have the "ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPTS" in Greek. You should be ashamed of your original manuscripts because there is nothing original about any of them, except in your diffused mind.

Start with the language and see how deep the errors go.

doesn't make any difference, it's all the same. My advice: put the book down, as it is a hazard to your thinking capacity!
Re: Which Version Of The Bible Do You Read And Why? by italo: 3:37pm On Oct 01, 2011
@Jesoul,

The major difference between the Catholic versions and others is that is the original bible that has been in existence since the fourth century andd has 73books, while the others came into being almost 1200years later with Martin Luther removing 7books which he felt didn't conform with his 'reformation ideas', so they have 66books.
