Politics / Boko Haram Begs For Forgiveness, Signs Ceasefire Deal by Presius(m): 10:35am On Jul 09, 2013
According to the Boko haram sect "We are seeking forgiveness from the people over the number of people killed in the country".

With these words, Imam Muhammadu Marwana, an influential member of the Abubakar Shekau-led Boko Haram sect, yesterday, confirmed a ceasefire agreement with the Federal Government to end their deadly activities across most states of Northern Nigeria, which have claimed about 4,000 lives and destroyed properties worth billions of Naira since 2009.

The agreement came exactly 82 days after the Federal Government raised a 25-man committee to work out modalities for granting the amnesty to the sect.

The Federal Government, yesterday, said that it had signed a ceasefire agreement with the militant group. Minister of Special Duties and Chairman of the Peace and Dialogue Committee in the North, Alhaji Tanimu Turaki announced the ceasefire agreement on the Hausa service of Radio France International monitored in Kano.

The announcement came on the eve of the Muslim Holy month of Ramadan expected to commence today throughout the world.

Although details of the peace deal were sketchy, Turaki who spoke in Hausa further said that the Boko Haram insurgents had agreed to lay down their arms.

"We have sat down and agreed that Jama'atu Ahlul Sunnah Lidda'awati wal Jihad, (Boko Haram) will lay down their arms as part of the agreement so as to end the insurgency. Government agreed with ceasefire and will look into ways to ensure that the troops relax their activities till the final take off of the ceasefire," Turaki told his interviewers.

Confirming the truce, and sounding apologetic, Imam Muhammadu Marwana said:

"This ceasefire, in sha'Allahu, from the time I am talking to you (Radio France Hausa Service) we have ceasefire because of the discussion held so as to have peace over this struggle. We are seeking forgiveness from the people over the number of people killed in the country.

I appeal to those who lost their loved ones to our activities to forgive us and on our side we have forgiven all those who committed atrocities against us.
"I want to state clearly that we have no hands in the unfortunate attack on the secondary school."

A member of the Presidential Amnesty Committee, said "Shekau's leadership came out through several fronts and set traps for us. The government gave them confidence, the confidence led to trust and they said they will call their men to cease-fire and they have done so."

Although, many Nigerians have received the news with mixed feelings and skeptical optimism, the National Coordinator of the Oodua Peoples Congress, OPC, Gani Adams said it is a step in the right direction.

Arewa youths still believe that the Federal Government must address the issues that led to the Boko Haram insurgency in the first place.

Although it seemed like Boko Haram had agreed to a ceasefire earlier in the year, it did not take long before it was obvious that the ceasefire was porous. After the many lives lost and properties destroyed, Nigerians, pray that this so called ceasefire will last and that cases of bomb blasts, suicide bombings, and random attacks will be a thing of the past.
Politics / Yobe Killing Wicked And Babaric---says Goodluck by Presius(m): 10:36am On Jul 08, 2013
President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday described the killing of 29 pupils of Government Secondary School, Mamudo, Potiskum, Yobe State, as wicked and barbaric and vowed to flush our perpetrators of violence out of the country.

"The killing is barbaric, completely wicked. Anybody who will target innocent children for any kind of grief will certainly go to hell," the President said in a statement by his spokesman, Reuben Abati.

The presidential condemnation came on the heels of the closure of secondary schools in Yobe as a result of the killings of the school pupils in Mamudo.

Governor Ibrahim Gaidam who described the killing as "cold-blooded murder" when he visited the attacked school on Sunday ordered all secondary schools in the state shut until the beginning of next academic session in September.

The pupils and one of their teachers were murdered by suspected members of the violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram whom the security forces had been waging war against since the declaration of state of emergency in Yobe, Adamawa and Borno states on May 14 this year.

Abati added, "Mr. President wants to assure Nigerians that these kind of desperate Nigerians will be flushed out of the system.

"Mr. President is committed to the issue of the protection of lives and properties of all Nigerians and he wants to assure Nigerians that the war against terrorists has been launched and will continue and the Nigerian government is determined to put an end to this menace.

"The President sympathises with the families affected and he stands by them at this moment of grief. The killing is most unfortunate, most regrettable and Mr. President wants to assure Nigerians that any attempt by any group to undermine this government will be resisted."

Apart from the President, Nigerians on Sunday expressed outrage at the killing of the young pupils with the Senate President David Mark calling for a definite halt to the spate of killings by members of Boko Haram and other violent groups in the country.

In a statement made available to our correspondent on Sunday, Mark said, "Even in war situations, children and women are protected. Killing children is akin to cutting down the future of a people. This is inhuman, barbaric and unacceptable to any right thinking member of the society.

"For no reason, the lives of these promising children were needlessly cut down by the heartless people. This cannot be a way of life. Enough of this bloodshed."

He urged the security operatives to step up their surveillance and monitoring activities to halt the trend and bring perpetrators to justice.

Senator Mark assured that the National Assembly would continue to give priority attention to appropriation to the security operatives to carry out their duties without hitches.

Meanwhile, the killers appeared to have shifted attention to defenceless young persons.

Suspected Boko Haram members had on June 17, 2013, killed nine pupils sitting for the National Examination Council examination at the Ansarudeen Primary/ Secondary School located in the Jajeri ward of Maiduguri metropolis in Borno State.

On June 16, gunmen suspected to be members of the group killed seven pupils of a secondary school in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital.

The President of ASUU, Dr. Issa Faggae, described the attack on the Yobe school on Saturday as unfortunate.

Fagge said that the government should pay attention to insecurity by addressing socio-economic problems.

"It seems the approach taken by government is not providing a lasting solution to the insecurity. Nigerians have been impoverished over the years. The resources of the country are not used for the common man. Nigerians have also not been availed of quality education to ensure they can stand on their own and create jobs," he said.

President of the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union, Mr. Asagha Nkoro, described the killing as gruesome.

He noted that the level of insecurity in the county was frightening.

Nkoro said, "It is high time the government and everyone in the political class faced this issue sincerely with the fear of God and stop further drama and manifestation that reflect a show the so called politics with human life.

"We call on government to stop all forms of social celebration and promote soberness while we trust God for forgiveness and divine intervention to stem this ugly trend."

The Congress for Progressive Change, described the killing as mindless.

The CPC National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Rotimi Fashakin, in an interview with one of our correspondents, said the party abhorred violence of any kind.

He stated, "There is no religion that encourages the senseless killing of people. We condemn it in the strongest possible terms.

"No religion can be forced on Nigerians as a state religion; we are a secular state and will remain so. Look at Egypt where they are largely Arab, I am sure most of the people who poured into Tahir square in opposition to the way in which their President was ruling the nation went out to protect the secularity of their country."

Also, the Senate Leader, Chief Victor Ndoma-Egba, SAN, and a member of the National Democratic Coalition, Chief Mike Okoye, condemned the killings.

While Ndoma-Egba, representing Cross River Central, andOkoye said the act represented the height of wickedness.

"It (the killing) is a most heinous and condemnable act not only against the youth, but youth seeking education and enlightenment and therefore the future. All of the country must rise together against these barbarians," Ndoma-Egba said.

Okoye said, "The act is devilish and not only devilish but satanic. I believe that government should rise to the occasion. The civilized world should also rise to the occasion and eradicate this evil. Those who conducted this devilish act have dead souls and demented spirits and are not worthy to be counted as human beings in any civilized society.

"Government must immortalise their names as heroes. They will forever remain our heroes. May Our Lord Jesus Christ receive the souls of the faithful departed? May they rest in perfect peace?"

The Minister of Interior, Mr. Abba Moro, condemned the gruesome killing and describsed the murder as "barbaric, crude and unacceptable" in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Mr. George Ubong, on Sunday.

Moro was quoted as having said that the killings were unimaginable and had no justification whatsoever.

He said that it was rather unfortunate that people could wreak such havoc with the sole intent to instil unnecessary fear and pain in Nigerians.

The minister stressed that those behind the killings had no reason for their action in view of the decision of the Federal Government to set up a Presidential Committee under the leadership of the Minister of Special Duties, Mr. Kabiru Turaki (SAN) to engage repentant leaders of the sect in dialogue and to consider the possibility of granting amnesty to them.

He called on the leaders of the insurgents to embrace the Government's offer of dialogue and refrain from the mindless waste of human lives in the country.

He stated that the activities of Boko Haram members were inimical to the image of the country.

He said that the country was in need of "all the goodwill of its global partners, all the foreign investment it can muster as well as the environment conducive for developments."

The minister who sympathized with the families of the late students called on Nigerians to cooperate with security operatives by rendering relevant information that could lead to the prevention of such heinous killings and arrest of the culprits."

Lets make a wish,
a toast for the night.
a kiss for this life.
a lasting verse.
an everlasting memory.
silent sceams and endless pleas.
An open wound.
Wishes wished were wishes i wished.
This is where we died.
"Burn em" their violet pleas.
Dust to ashes.
Fading memories.
Hatefull thoughts.
Hurtfull emotions.
My flesh is melting.
"turn up the heat"
my breath is laboured.
I am in flames.
Forever the broken one.
Here we fell.
On this sacred earth my blood dripped.
This cursed land.
A town that worships flesh.
Forever keep my memories.
Learn from my mistakes.
Hope for a better.
A hug for my mother.
A lasting kiss to my lover.
Kiss this night.
Bless this date.
Oct 5th 2012.
A thousand pages of erased ink.
A dead one.
Dust to ashes.
A lonely soul.
An oceans soul...

Foreign Affairs / President Jammeh Of Gambia Warns Of Mass Executions by Presius(m): 9:20am On Aug 25, 2012
DAKAR, Senegal - The eccentric president of Gambia has warned that he will carry out a mass execution of prisoners by mid-September, a threat local journalists and opposition officials said must be taken seriously given his unpredictability and long record of human rights abuses.
President Yahya Jammeh, a former wrestler and army colonel who seized power in the tiny nation 18 years ago, said in a widely reported speech this week that "by the middle of next month, all the death sentenceswould have been carried out to the letter." Amnesty International says 47 people are on death row, including a number of former government officials convicted of "treason" for supposedly plotting to overthrow Mr. Jammeh's government. The death sentence inGambia is usually carried out by hanging.
Amnesty said nine prisoners had already been taken from their cells and executed, according to "credible reports" it said it had received. The organization said that the nine were executed Thursday night, and that threeof them had previously been convicted of treason.
The editor of the leading opposition newspaper, Foroyaa - himself a regular targetof government persecution - said he could not yet confirm the executions late on Friday."What is clear is that nine people were removed from where they were" on death row, said the editor, Sam Sarr. "We do not yet know what happened to them."
Amnesty regularly denounces Mr. Jammeh's government for systematic use of torture at the country's notorious Mile 2 Central Prison, enforced disappearances, the frequent arrests of journalists and opposition politicians, and the regular shutting down of critical news media. Gambia, an English-speaking enclave smaller than Maryland in themiddle of Francophone West Africa, is considered one of the most repressive countries on the continent. Its long white-sand beaches are nonetheless a favorite of Northern European vacationers, and the country depends heavily on tourism.
For the country's embattled longtime opposition leader, Halifa Sallah, Mr. Jammeh's motivation in announcing the executions wasclear. "It frightens people," Mr. Sallah said. "It makes people be careful. People live in a stateof uncertainty. Everybody gets worried."
Mr. Jammeh has made himself notorious for pronouncements like a threat to behead gay people, who are subjected to systematic persecution. He claims he can cure AIDS and has staged elaborate would-be AIDS-curing ceremonies with himself, dressed in flowing white robes, at the center. Three years ago herounded up numerous citizens he accused of witchcraft, sometimes with lethal consequences.
Most recently, Mr. Jammeh claimed to have won re-election in November to a fourth termwith 72 percent of the vote, in an election boycotted as thoroughly unfair even by the normally indulgent observer mission of the regional grouping of West African nations known as Ecowas.
Mr. Jammeh often arrests or dismisses leading officials in his country of 1.8 million, asliver of land wedged into Senegal, leading to what journalists, opposition officials and human rights groups say is a permanent atmosphere of paranoia in government circles. Last year, the former army and intelligence chiefs were sentenced to death on treason charges. The former minister of information and communication was also charged with treason, accused of printing and distributing T-shirts with the slogan "Endto Dictatorship Now."
Mr. Jammeh's eccentricity has made him something of a headache for other leaders in the region, who regularly make the trip to thediminutive capital, Banjul, in attempts to talk him down.
Such was the case this week when the African Union sent Benin's foreign minister totry to persuade the Gambian leader not to make good on his executions threat. But the trip may have been too late.
Journalists in Banjul - who bear the brunt of Mr. Jammeh's repression, and are frequently arrested and tortured themselves - think the president is serious.
"From my observation, I think he's serious about it," said Madi Ceesay, publisher of The Daily News. "His expression was of someone very upset," said Mr. Ceesay, who noted that Mr. Jammeh's speech had referred to two murder cases in which husbands killed wives."He said these kinds of killings must stop. Really, I'm not taking it for granted. I'm worried he'll carry this thing out."
In his speech, which was televised in Gambia,Mr. Jammeh was quoted as saying, "There is no way my government will allow 99 percent of the population to be held to ransom by criminals."
Amnesty said that in addition to the nine whomay already have been executed, "more are under threat of imminent executions today and in the coming days."
Mr. Sarr, the Foroyaa editor, also believes Mr. Jammeh means business. "If you judge by his countenance, that showed he meant it," Mr. Sarr said
