Hey Guys.
This is HoneyMan

Most people have very little or knowledge about Beekeeping and the numerous Benefits one can gain from being a Beekeeper.

Beekeeping ( otherwise, Called Apiculture) is the rearing of Bees for the production of Honey and it's by products ( Beewax, Propolis etc... )

Nigeria has a country has only tapped less than 3% of its Honey prowess as most of the honey we consume in the country are either adulterated ( fake honey ) or Improved from other countries.

Beekeeping requires very little commitment unlike other Agricultural businesses that requires your daily attention to either feed the animal, Water the crops other stuffs.
Bees basically source for food themselves and start producing honey inside the hive.

It also requires little to no security to start as bees are their own security.
With Beekeeping, You can make all your capital in starting the business within your first honey harvest.

To start Beekeeping, All you need Is a Beehive ( within 20,000NGN -25,000NGN ) to start and you can get other Equipments ( BeeSuit, BeeSmoker etc ) as time goes on.

A typical Beehive can give you on average 5-12 litres of honey from your first harvest.
You'd also get a meaningful amount of Beewax also to Sell

You return the Bars in the hives back to their position and the Bees continue their honey production for you to come for another Harvest within the next 4-6 months

A litre of honey sells for 3,000NGN - 5,000NGN I'm the Nigerian market at the moment.

Agriculture / A Simple Guide To Beekeeping by sulaimon99(m): 7:05am On Sep 01, 2022
Beekeeping ( Otherwise referred to as Apiculture ) is an untapped goldmine in the Nigerian agricultural sector as it is a very profitable business which require very little capital to start with, Requires less attention and Quite contrary to general knowledge has other Products that gives pretty much meaningful financial and medicinal value just like its major product which is Honey.

With a capital of less than 50,000 NGN, One can start beekeeping with ease and still continue with their daily business/job or source of income without any of them being at loggerheads

The major equipment needed to start this profitable business includes but not limited to
Beehives
-Complete Bee Suit ( with Hand gloves and Rubber boots )
-Bee Smoker
-Bee Brush
With the above all under 50,000NGN

A major requirement to go into this business is sighting a piece of land to use as your apiary, This land will be where you place your Beehive(s) after baiting it to attract the bees so as for them to colonize the hive and make their abode

This piece of land should have
-Lots of greens ( flowers, pollens, Nectar ) for the bees to feed om
-A close source of water nearby
-A meaningful distance from where people reside ( for safety reasons )
-Should have trees or shades where the Hives can be placed underneath to serve as a protection from direct sunlight or rainfall to the bees

After placing the Baited beehive on the farmland, You leave the hive for it to be colonized by bees, You can check every three days or week to check if the bees have colonized the hive, Once the Hive has been colonized by the Bees, You only need to check it once in a month ( With wearing your bee suit and also with a Bee smoker to calm the Bees )

There are two harvest cycles in a year, Each takes around 4-6 months to have pure honey that is ready to harvest ( this is dependent on the type of Bee colony that colonizes the hive ).

You harvest the honey comb at the end of each harvest cycle or whenever your honey is ready for harvest and then you extract your honey from the honeycomb, other products you can get from the Honeycomb include Beeswax, Propolis etc.

After Harvesting from the hive , you leave it there for the Bees to continue the process or if the Bees leave to look for another abode, You can rebait the hive and place it in a strategic position on your farmland to attract another swarm of Bees.

The above is just a simple summary of what Beekeeping entails and not in any way an extensive or complete guide to beekeeping.
Honeyman is an Agricultural Business that is focused on Beekeeping ( Apiculture )
At HoneyMan_Ng, We are levitating Beekeeping as we bring innovative and sustainable patterns to the Agribusiness to make it more profitable and Eco-Friendly.

sulaimon99:
Hello , I'm HoneyMan_Ng

Last week I received a call from a client about some bees disturbing his farmers on the farmland located in Oyo State.
The bees were habitated in a tall tree on the farm and the locals were scared of approaching the tree or the bushy Area close to it as the bees were very aggressive ( There were an active colony )

I and my colleague took off from the city of Ibadan( We travel nationwide) to Okaka .
Okaka is a town in Oyo state, it's an hour drive from Oyo State border town Saki.

We took an approximate of 3 hours and 30 minutes on the road from Ibadan

We got there late in the evening but couldn't do anything meaningful, Our Client covered our hotel expenses for the night.

By 6:15am the following morning, we were out of the hotel and on our way to the farm, it took us another 30 minutes to get to the farm inside the same Okaka town ( Oyo state is really big ) undecided

On getting to the farm, we wore our Complete uniform from the BeeSuit, Hand Gloves and Rubber boots and made sure there was no openings in any of our clothings

When we got to the bush and approached the tree where the Bee Colony was located for inspection.

We realised that our BeeSmoker was not going to be of help as the tree was quite tall and we'd also need support ( like a ladder or table for height to stand on ) and we'd need to setup some small fire at the base of the tree to calm the bees and so we could have a better view of the colony and see if we could harvest any honey before migrating the bees to a new location ( we came with two beehives bought by our client )

We had to get a spoilt car tyre,A litre of fuel ,Some junks to light fire all from the locals.
We were also able to get a table from them to give us height so I could get to the hive comfortably.

Our plan worked as the fire Gave enough smoke to calm the bees and made them less aggressive .

We were able to start harvesting but unfortunately all we got there was Brood so we had to dispose it.

After harvesting, the next thing was to migrate them to the beehives we brought.
We already baited the Beehives heavily with Beewax and some pure honey ( we baited aggressively ) before entering the bush.

We prepared Honey Syrup ( mixture of water and honey 30:70) In a bottle so as to spray on the Bees when they were calm so as to reduce their flight ( the syrup will make them wet so they won't be able to fly very well )

I won't go to in-depth with the migration ( Bees sting us gan ) sad

We were able to successfully migrate the bees but alot of them were still on the tree and didn't follow the Queen bee we captured to the new hive ( they would migrate eventually after some hours or days )

Since the farm was needed urgently, we told the locals to light up some fire at the bottom of the tree later at night.

The second beehive we brought was also baited and placed in a strategic location on the farmland.

All the process took around 4 hours or so
Normally it shouldn't take up to 30 minutes to 1 hour but we had issues initially to set up smoke and getting height to access the tall tree.

In all, we ended well

We left the farm and treated ourselves to some Nice food in a canteen in Okaka town and then we left for Ibadan.

Thanks

What do you mean by brood honey, and why did you toss it?

Brood means that the comb was not ready to be harvested.
It was yet to be pure honey.
And Brood has no really good use per sé that was why I tossed it Sir

It is very possible Sir.
Beekeeping does not require your attention all the time .

After your farm setup and your hives have been colonized.
You can only go for observation once in a month or you might not really need to go also.

Just make sure your hives are in a Secure and favorable environment for the bees Sir.
