Police in Niger have arrested a 22-year-old housewife, Harela Uba, of Shakodna village, Shiroro Local Government Area of the state, for allegedly killing a three-day-old baby boy.
The Commissioner of Police in the State, Adamu Usman, disclosed this in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria in Minna on Tuesday. .

Usman said that one Uba Saidu of Shakodna village in Shiroro Local Government Area, reported the matter at Shiroro Police Division that his second wife, Fa’iza Uba, of the same address, went into bathroom and left her three-day-old baby boy in her room. .

. “When she returned, she discovered white foam coming out from the mouth of the baby and he was immediately rushed to General Hospital, Kuta, where he was confirmed dead by a physician,” he said. .

. ‘’The Police on reasonable suspicion invited his first wife, one Harela Uba, of the same address, who is eight-month pregnant for questioning, being the one at home when the incident happened,” he said.
The Commissioner said that upon interrogation, the suspect confessed to giving her seven-year-0ld daughter, Khadija Uba, a liquid substance suspected to be insecticide also known as ‘Ota Pia-Pia,’ to administer on the child, which she did.

The Convener of #RevolutionNow protest, Mr Omoyele Sowore, who is being held by the Department of State Services, has asked for bail in liberal terms in a fresh application he filed before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Sowore filed the fresh application on Friday after his failed bid to have the court hear his earlier one challenging the detention order issued against him by Justice Taiwo Taiwo on July 8, 2019.

The affidavit he filed in support of the application stated in part, “That the applicant (Sowore) herein has never been charged with any criminal offence whatsoever.

“That the Nigeria police also conducted investigation on the matter and made its findings public.

“That the persons who participated in the protests of August 5, 2019, were charged with the offence of unlawful assembly at the Magistrates’ Court in Ebute Meta, Lagos State, Osogbo in Osun State and Calabar (Cross River).

“That on the August 9, 2019, the applicant filed an application to set aside, discharge and/or vacate the said ex parte order permitting his detention for 45 days.”


The security agency had accused Sowore, the SaharaReporters publisher and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress in the last February 2019 poll, of planning to topple the President Muhammadu Buhari government, through the protest.

Sowore denied the coup allegations insisting that he only mobilised Nigerians to protest against bad governance and other vices.

Following an ex parte application by the DSS, Justice Taiwo Taiwo of the same Abuja division of the Federal High Court, on August 8, issued a detention order permitting the security agency to hold the activist for 45 days to enable it to conclude investigations.

On August 9, 2018, Sowore, through his lead counsel, Mr Femi Falana (SAN), filed a motion challenging the detention order.

But the efforts of his team of lawyers to make the court to hear the application which was filed over a month ago, have yet to yield any result.

In his fresh application which he filed on Friday, Sowore’s lawyers argued that the DSS had completed its investigations, adding that by Section 28 (4) of the Terrorism Prevention (Amendment) Act, 2013 “a person detained pursuant to Section 27 (1) can be admitted to bail by this honourable court.”

One of his lawyers, Marshal Abubakar, who deposed to the affidavit filed in support of the application, prayed the court grant bail to Sowore in liberal terms.

He added that the activist had responsible persons who could stand as sureties for him.

The supporting affidavit read in part, “That no criminal charge whatsoever has been brought against the applicant herein.

“That the applicant undertakes not to interfere with the investigation of this case or make contacts with the witnesses of the respondent.”

Nigeria's First Lady Aisha Buhari on Thursday September 12, called on the military authorities to delploy female soldiers to fight against insecurity witnessed in some states across Nigeria.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Defence Headquarters maiden annual conference on women peace and security at the National Defence College, Abuja, President Buhari's wife partly blamed the security crisis witnessed in the country on the yet to be definded role of women and cold feet in exploring their potential for operational effectiveness in the military.

Aisha Buhari who was represented by a Senior Special Assistant Dr Hajo Sani, stated that for insecurity to be successfully tackled, the impact of the female gender must be adequately unleashed.

“The security issues bedeviling our country still abound probably because we are yet to redefine the Armed Forces of Nigeria to explore the potential of women for operational effectiveness. Women possess the traits of patience, perseverance, and passion.

“There is a need for the reformulation of laws and policies that border on the inclusion of women in the strategic reformation of effective operational deployment. The wide margin and lack of flexibility in structures based on gender should be abridged.

“ Women are restricted to careers within supportive mustering of military community such as finance, human resources, personnel, logistics, medical services and welfare. I join the military women to take exception to such psychological oppression" she said.

Also speaking at the event, the Chief of the Defence Staff, Gen. Gabriel Olonisakin said the military has attained 27.7% female participation in peacekeeping operations.

“Currently, the Armed Forces of Nigeria has attained 27.7 per cent female participation in peacekeeping operations. This is higher than the UN recommendation of 17 per cent.

“These women are given equal opportunities like their male counterparts, including commanding major combat units and flying fighter jets for the air force.

“The Nigerian Navy has also deployed women as sailors and for other key aspects such as ship maintenance" he said.

Nigerian player, Ibrahim Iriyos, has broken Super Stars Club’s transfer record after securing a move from Aston Villa Gano for a whopping sum of N5,000 in #Kano State.
