@Ajanlekoko,
I've followed your posts on various threads and indeed, I so much respect your views and comments on issues sir!
I graduated with a First in Business Admin (Actuarial Science Specialisation). I completed the NYSC scheme in June & have made several online job applications since then without any invitation yet. I'm becoming increasingly apprehensive, particularly considering my age. I'll soon be 28, meaning that i'm already past the age for many entry level jobs, especially in the financial sector, where my interest lies and my skills relevant. I'm willing to start small and gain relevant work experience but opportunities are lacking (or may be I cannot locate them). I have a very humble background and really struggled hard to sponsor myself through school. I'm hardworking, reliable, and of impeccable integrity.
Please sir, i would appreciate any little way you can be of help to me in my job search.
Thank you sir.

Lol, I will give him the benefit of the doubt. It is just that we are seeing more first class on nairaland these days. Or are the 1% of them AJ talked about all on Nairaland?

Mathematics

I see! I heard maths grads suck at English language...maybe i just confirmed it grin But T22 writes and would probably speak impeccably.

How come you? I mean you lamba lamb

Hey adevicks

You probably should know why you aren't getting invites.

Age is a veritable factor in job recruitment, especially at the entry/graduate trainee level.

you need to be b/w 24-26 to be short-listed for most entry level jobs. It's up-to you to do the needful....

nice thread and advice here. Mr ajanlekoko, have been following your threads for so long. I do enjoy your posts and avice on this section. You are among the few nairalanders that i would love to meet including jarus and the mod yakmuza, he once adviced someone and cleared his doubt on the prospects of getting a job as a library and information science student which i am one and just graduated recently. His contributions were useful and i got one or two things from that thread. I so much love nairaland because of how people come together to brainstorm on issues and leaves us with a vast information to choose from and apply to add value to our lives. I would love if you guys with your immense exposure can shed more light on this course and how relevant it is in the working environment which you find yourself. Thanks

@Nitrogen.hey bro! I don't think the young man ought to be insulted with the abusive 'f' word.He did agree that his English is imperfect.Surprisingly,he truly made a first class!
@Lamba lamb.Try as much as possible to improve both your written and spoken English.Many a times that would determine how your worth is going to be defined.I'll advise you lay your hands on some of Dele Asade's books(i hope i get his name right,he's the author of 'A1 in English') and read educative Magazines.Never be too timid to speak and write in English,the more you do,the perfect you become!
Wish you the best bro and i hope to see you at the top!

@Lamba Lamb
good to know about your first class degree. If you are sound in Information Technology, with a bias for programming, scripting,CLI etc, i'd advice you learn UNIX. This is a valuable skill in the telecoms industry. It will be easier for them to take you in as an entry level practitioner( who can be trained to do other related things/tasks), because most Telecoms infrastructure are running some base UNIX code.
NOTE: ask yourself where your career passion truly lies. Like for me, I'm doing sth totally different from what i studied in Uni.

just my 2cents

AjanleKoko:

You guys are really over the top with this abroad thing.
For your information, there are a lot of chaps who went to top schools abroad, and are back in Nigeria. Working in MNCs, running their own business, some are even into art, fashion, and writing/blogging. And they make a reasonably OK living. Returning to Naija has not killed them ke.

Sure, Nigeria is not the West, not by a long shot. But there's a pervading mentality among Nigerian youth; they must go abroad, ostensibly to get a degree because 'the nation has failed them', or 'Nigerian education is useless'. What if i told you a friend of mine, who is a VP in a very big bank in Nigeria, is by birth an American citizen, and yet has never gone there to study or work? You would say it's a lie, or there is something wrong with the guy. But I shyt you not, the guy schooled in Nigeria, made a good grade, and even did his masters here. He's a pali-carrying American citizen.

The financial controller of Nigeria LNG is a chap with a first in accounting, a masters in finance from Unilag, and he was 2nd overall in the nation in his ICAN finals. He's one of the top five people in NLNG. Which abroad you wan use shakara that kind of person? He doesn't have any foreign degree, and he has been posted all over Europe and some parts of Asia to work.

If this guy truly has a first class in mathematics, I will march him over to Accenture myself. In fact, he should contact me. But if he does have a first class in math, and is in Nigeria, he won't even need me. Abroad? He will travel to America tire, even with his ordinary Bsc.

More likely he is taking the piss with respectable Nairaland folk, like so many other joker youth, which is why I dey vex for this section nowadays. You see posts like ' I want to work in oil and gas company, please help me!' angry I am beginning to wonder if any of these people are even in any university in Nigeria, with their terrible grammar.

Thank you Sir for your wonderful contribution to my post may God bless you. Have been browsing through the names of the company you listed and have applied to some already, but as a matter of fact I would really like to contact you sir.

Hello everyone!
This is a wonderful topic. It happens to be that I'm a graduate of Industrial Mathematics with a 2nd class degree (upper division) in UNIBEN. I did my research before and during the NYSC scheme, didn't get good results cos the Companies needed a discharge certificate. Now that I'm through, the case seems to be different.
