Godogwu:

Fact still remains that his wealth grew by over 500% in 2010, wouldn't you agree that was self made?.....well he did inherit $11.2 billion from his maternal grandfather or politicians or whatever, he made a great chunk of it himself, hence he is a self-made billionaire....Forbes even states so!
Does that made him a self made billionaire? Maybe you and Billyonaire should find out the value of N500,000 in 1977,70% of people who are opportuned to receive such loan in 1977 will still be a millionaire today. Get a N2,000,000 loan from a relative (without interest) to start a business then come back in five years to tell us if you are still a church rat that you are today, leave that your wikipedia and use your God given brain to think.

Nope it's not.....but by Forbes this guy is worth $11.2 million (estimated) and he is noted as " self-made" and an entrepreneur.
I agree with Wiki on that. At least, we all know Forbes puts his fortune at that. Self-made may be debatable, but I'm inclined to believing he qualifies for 'self-made'

Billyonaire: WRONG, The man you speak of lived in Northern Ghana and died 1955. If Dangote had such great grand father, not even a Father, he would not have to borrow 400K naira from an uncle.
Get your facts together, Aliko's mother (Mariya Dantata) was the granddaughter of Alhassan
Dantata who was the richest man in West Africa in the 50s,Aliko's mother received her share of Alhassan Dantata wealth when the man died in 1955 along with the other children that included Dr. Aminu Dantata.
Aliko's father Mohammed Dangote was also Dantata’s business
associate.
So tell me how in the worle you refered to such a man as a self made,NO MAN is bro.

Billyonaire: U dey mind am ? He probably doesnt know what $11.2 billion means. Let him just compare how much Nigeria has in external account, then he will know what we are talking about. Dangote is richer than many countries. Self-Made.
The fact that Aliko is rich is an open secret and no sane man will argue that but the man or any other rich man alive is never a self made, prove me wrong bro.

Dangote became rich through various dubious means.
During Abacha regime, he enjoyed monopolyin arms and ammunition importation that made him rich than the Dantata's family.
It was through the importation of guns during Abacha that made him standout as a rich man and before Abacha's death, he was already made.
Obasanjo granted him monopoly in cement importation when he banned Ibeto group from importing cement.
All in all, he was made by the government through dubious means at the expense of the masses.

I'm glad we have contemporary historians in the room.Abacha crippled almost all MKO Abiola's business empire then handed dangote the monopoly of importing sugar, cement, flour and other essential commodites,in assence the wicked Abacha's govt propelled dangote to where he is today, assuming June 12 was no annulled dangote will never be where he is today. He knows it,that's why all his businesses are in the south.

Seun:
Probably the ban on importation of cement, which makes cement more expensive in Nigeria, which makes home construction more expensive.

Emmm... The ban on importation has brought about more cement factories in the country and has created more jobs for the unemployed.

By the way, Nigeria imports too many things and most of them can be created locally here in the country.

That's how China is tackling its unemployment problems, as shown in the fact that their population is much more than ours but they are doing better.

So let's not blame a business man who takes advantage of business opportunities around him.
Re: Is Aliko Dangote Really A Self-Made Billionaire? by maxproxl: 7:57pm On Aug 05, 2012
dangote is self made as stated by forbes. Every company he owns he started from scratch. Even where he is a partner, he always has the lion share. He is not an "evil monopolist" as u most of you think.

DANGOTE group is just an ULTIMATE VOLUME PLAYER. which means they enter a market and produce more QUANTITY than the existing companies & circulate though their vast HAULAGE system. They always leverage on PRICING, LOGISITICS & CUSTOMER SERVICE. every product they manufacture has other active players. SUGAR, SALT, AGRO-SACKS, FLOUR, CEMENT, HAULAGE, DANSA JUICE, MOWA WATER, PASTA(spaghhetti/macaroni/noodles), PETIT TOMATO PASTE, ZIZA MILK, TELECOMS(ALHEIRI) and OIL & GAS.

dangote is a consistent business man that creates the largest employment in NIGERIA. he is a de-tribalised nigerian as most of his friends are yorubas and igbos, establishing industries not just in the north but all over the nation. dangote is a philantropist per excellence. HE CREATES MEGA INCOME FOR STATE & FEDERAL GOVERNMENT THROUGH TAXES.

the same hatred most people on this thread av for him is directed towards bill gates(microsoft), larry ellison(oracle), mark zukerberg(facebook), michael dell(Dell), donald trump(trump group) and other entrepreneurs who have dominated their market in america.

other software makers in america beleives bill gates is running a monopoly while all microsoft does is giving customers value added products as bonus. when u buy the windows operating system, u get windows explorer(an internet browser) as bonus. other social networking site owner's hate facebook with a passion e.g "myspace.com".

for your information, the best is yet to come for DANGOTE GROUP.
MICROSOFT, ORACLE, DELL, FACEBOOK, SKPE, WAL-MART, VIRGIN AIRLINE all enjoy government support in AMERICA so please stop the hate. IF WE HAVE JUST 36-DANGOTES IN NIGERIA(one for each state), WE WILL BE DEVELOPED TODAY. MANY RICH NIGERIANS ARE JUST LAUDERING MONEY IN FOREIGN BANKS, INSTEAD OF ESTABLISHING INDUSTRIES TO PROMOTE ECONOMIC GROWTH.

Take Dangote cement for example. He is creatin employment in over 8-african countries. Please we should celebrate this man and stop crucifyin him for having good relationship skills of blending with those in power. The man just donated N900million to edo state.

Dangote Cement is a fully integrated cement company and has projects and operations in Nigeria, Benin and Ghana; with total existing production and import capacity of 14 million tonnes per annum and new production projects in development with 11.1 million tonnes per annum additional capacity. The Company operates the Obajana Cement Plant (OCP), the largest cement plant in sub-Saharan Africa. Aggressive growth plans target a strong pan-African presence as Dangote Cement evolves to become a truly multi-national corporation.

As part of this drive, Dangote Cement is committed to making Nigeria a net exporter of cement. The company owns four terminals, two in Lagos and two in Port Harcourt through which it currently imports cement. These operations will progressively be replaced and converted into export terminals as new production capacity comes online in Nigeria.

2. Sierra Leone 0.5 million MTpa
3. Ivory Coast 1.0 million MTpa
4. Liberia 0.5 million MTpa

OBAJANA Cement in Kogi State
Single largest cement plant in Africa with a capacity of 5.2 million MTpa (additional capacity of over 5 million MTpa planned).Vertical roller mills for energy, efficient grinding of raw material and clinker. Gas pipeline of approx. 90 km length for the supply of natural gas to cement plant and power plant from Ajaokuta to Obajana (capacity -96,000 cu.m /hr.)
Power plant of capacity 135 mw - gas / diesel based.

Dangote is the number one entrepreneur in AFRICA. He is self made

One of the most ridiculous ideologies I have heard is the ideology that the poor are poor because of the rich. It is a despicable excuse for failure in life. Even the most corrupt free societies like Switzerland have many poor people. Some people come in contact with opportunities and advantage but many still fall flat on their face even with such opportunities. I have seen countless people go from millions, even billions to near zero. Threads like these only encourage people to remain poor and never aspire for greatness. In todays world, you can never really be big by being nice in business. Bill Gates, Slim Hellu, Steve Jobs, Mark Zukerberg, Google chaps, etc, are all business sharks. Their motivation is not to create porvety but to create empires. Their activities affect many people differently. It puts some out of work and creates opportunities for others. As a man, you are solely responsible for how you harness these opportunities in your favor. Sometimes, the biggest problem of the poor is stup1d pride.

Aliko Dangote is largely a self made Billionaire.

He got a loan from his uncle Abdulkadir Sanusi Dantata with which he started his business, in much the same way Mark Zuckerburg and Bill Gates got loans/investment from angel investors. However, he didn't spend that money on women, cars and planes, but used his intellect and hard work to double his money. He is not the only member of the Dantata/Dangote family who got a loan.

Aliko Dangote is also close to government officials with the hope that he would get favourable policies from them, just the way Rupert Murdoch was close to Tony Blair and even asked Mr Blair to speak to Mr Berlusconi on his behalf. It is also similar to the way corporations in America donate to political campaigns (whether through the front or the back door).

However, what Forbes means by self made is that the money is his and he made his money. It is not inherited, neither is it family money (that's one of the reasons Nikki Openheimer of South Africa is not rated highly, because most of his money is family money).
