Nigeria has never been ranked better than India or Thailand for corruption, in fact Nigeria's best score ever: 2.7 in 2009 only matches India's very worst year, 2002, while Thailand's worst score of 3.2 (2002) is half a mark better than Nigeria has ever achieved.

What will you say about Russia? Russia is rated higher than Nigeria in terms of corruption but between Russia and Nigeria which one do you think Nigerians will prefer?

In actual fact, using homicides as a guide, Nigeria (12.2 per 100,000) is almost 3 times safer than South Africa (31.8 per 100,000) however it is almost 3 times more dangerous than America (3.5 per 100,000) and ten times more dangerous than the UK (1.2 per 100,000)

America is safer than Nigeria (3 times safer) and Nigerians are rushing there but Nigeria is also 3 times safer than South Africa, Nigerians are going there in droves..what do u think about that? Is that not a case of low self esteem.

I'm not going to cast aspersions on your intellectual prowess, so I'll focus on the facts:
Looking at the Adult Literacy rates as the accepted indicator of education standards, Nigeria places 143rd out of 179, after both South Africa and Congo.

Even in the US, Nigerians are most educated

The Life expectancy in Nigeria is 46.9 years, compared with 80.4 years in the UK and 182nd out of 194, just behind the AIDS ridden murder fest that is South Africa.

I don't know what they based there reports on, in my family since I was born, I can only report 2 cases of people who died before 46.9 years and for your information they were both SS. We have Nigerians living beyond 100 years especially the people of Ondo and Ekiti states.

I have one word for you: Makoko.

People in Makoko don't feed on thrash cans,Makoko is a settlement inhabited by fishermen, if you indeed watch d documentary you will be amazed by their business acumen.
Poor settlements are found all over the world including US and UK even the bible says "poor people will not cease from the Land" so the case of Makoko is not peculiar only to Nigeria.

Oh and for the record: in the UK ₦775,500 a year is the payment for the unemployed, plus a payment towards rent.

The unemployed in Nigeria is more than the population of UK, if Nigeria should be paying her unemployed with our mono economic structure, what will be left for her developments.

Not as many as Nigerians turning foreigners.

35,000 more people leave Nigeria than enter every year.

Just as we have Nigerians turning citizens of other countries, we also have other nationals turning Nigerians (d so called third world).

If you love it, fight for it to be better.

I have never in my life seen a Nigerian flag in the private residence of any Nigerian. According to the grapevine, Nigerians do not feel they owe anything to their country and/or government, no wonder they exhibit a persistent disconnect between them and the symbols of their country, Nigeria.

How many Nigerian homes have you been to? Lie.

Re: Why Nigerians Ridicule Nigeria by Nobody: 9:22pm On Aug 15, 2012
proflangdon: Hmmm... There are many reasons why Nigerians ridicule Nigeria.

No matter what anyone says, I believe that one of the main reasons is because of the leaders. Okay, let's take a look at the just concluded London Olympics. Most people shout that, "Nigerian athletes are useless! Nigeria is a shame!"

Now, I want you to check something. During our Olympics, did you see the son or daughter of any well-acclaimed "big man" in our country sweating to make us proud? Did you see the child of any politician there? Have they finished swimming in their luxurious pools or have they finished throwing parties that cost millions?

I watched the Olympic Games and, I must confess, the athletes tried alot. In the track events, boxing, table tennis, weight lifting, Nigerian athletes really tried.
The big men in this country are the ones in charge of building sporting centers in this country. But, instead, they pocket the money for their own personal use.

I saw alot of games that I've never seen before, and I asked myself, "Why didn't Nigeria qualify for these games?"
The answer is clear: we don't have sporting facilities in the country!! We don't even have standard football stadia in this country!! Those that are ridiculing Nigeria with respect to the just concluded Olympic Games to check again. If given the chance, without the proper facilities, training, and preparation, would you have won any medal for our country

So who is Chukwumerijes son then Be sure before you generalize bro! angry

Dollarman101:
Shut up! Nigeria has not done anything for you but I'm sure you were born in our general hospitals, where almost everything is subsidised including ante natal. Inspite of all the criticism, teaching hospitals and federal medical centres remain the number one destination for health care delivery for a vast majority of Nigerians.
You must also have passed through our unity schools or graduated from any of our federal or state universities which is the most subsidized in the world. Make you take time to ask your friends schooling abroad, how much they pay as school fees. You use our airports including MMAI which is ranked top 10. You ply some good roads in Nigeria without paying taxes or tolls.

Govt subsidizes your electricity bills so that you can pay as low as N7.00 per Kwh. Google electricity tariffs in Uk or other advanced countries and see what Nigerian govts subsidies for you.
If you re from Niger Delta, you collect bursary from your state govts. While you grew up, your only window to knowledge and the world may have been NTA. Recall the educative programmes like sesame street, kiddies vision 101, tales by the moonlight. Is NTA a private Ghanian company?
Make una dey think before talking. We know say things never better but that one no suppose make us dey misyarn.

Nigeria has finished your psyche, to attempt to absolve the gutter called Nigeria, makes you sound As!n!ne.

You think what the Government offers you as tertiary institutions is what you deserve?
You are comparing the cost with what is obtainable elsewhere lol, you need help, what about the quality of education? Quality of tutors nko?

Academic institutions filled with morally bankrupt lecturers who give marks per round of co!tus? is that what you are passing on as 'subsidized' like the govt is doing us a favor? *spits and shakes head*

can you phantom the earnings and potentials of this Nation?

you talked about general hospitals, ur myopic reasoning didn't disappoint as expected, why was there a proliferation of substandard private hospitals if the General hospitals was something to write home about?

Do i need to remind you that 60% of our General hospitals perform surgeries with rechargeable lanterns and i ''better pass my neighbor''generators. That is if the doctors are not on strike,
general hospitals without dialysis machine of less than 5m, yet you are happy they are subsidizing malaria and polio drugs, which are donations from well meaning Americans.

So that is what you deserve in a mineral rich and most populous black nation in the world?

You called the failure of our health institutions ''subsidized''. I feel sorry for you.

I saw where you mentioned NTA, your case is pathetic, as back as in the 80's and early 90's poorer middle eastern countries pay for western Tv channels leave it open for their citizens on Nile sat, with a C-band decoder, u watch European channels free courtesy of other poorer countries.
ghana's ministry of information is doing same on Astra satellite free for west African countries, better foreign and educative channels free for its citizens and beyond, does bbc, cine afrik, joy tv etc ring a bell? and you think the Giant of Africa did you a favor with crappy NTA?

I cant believe that someone alive will eulogize a Nigerian road or airport, are you sure you have traveled beyond lagos?

Have you forgotten the number of citizens that died in those airports within the last decade? The blood of over 1,000 citizens, gave rise to those pseudo face lifts, the question a man with conscience should ask is; if people didn't die,
then Nigerians perhaps don't even deserve a functioning airport?

I laughed when you said Nigerian Govt was subsidizing electricity, are you not ashamed that Nigeria is one of the few countries in the world that has spent the electricity budget of Africa without light in the bulb, yet a prodigal son like you applaud that? and expect us to be grateful?

if every govt failure is a "subsidy" in your books, what exactly do you deserve as a citizen?

A country where every citizen is a local Govt of its own? Provide housing, electricity, road, water, security for himself?

You sound like those politicians that offer Nigerians bags of rice in exchange for their votes. You think so low of Nigerians.

You have reduced yourself to the lowest of the lows, rightly put, at the ebb of absolute existence of humanity.
I wont be surprised if you live like a goat dancing n@k@d in festivities thinking that is the best you deserve.
You are a scumbag that has totally lost his self worth, suicide will help you a lot .

No nation on Earth is perfect, each has it's failings and even the seemingly bad ones have some good things going for them. However if you've never stepped out of the shores of Nigeria you would not understand how bad the state of Nigeria is.
Some nations understandably are victims of events beyond their control where the populace suffer as a result, some examples include, low levels of natural resources, war, forced ruler-ship(military,modern colony),natural disastersetc.

However Nigeria can not claim to have suffered any of these factors on any major scale in recent memory. There is also a tendency for the average Nigerian to pass off all Nigeria's problems as being down to bad leadership. In truth Nigerians bear collective responsibility albeit at varying degrees!
As much as i hate to say this but Nigeria is indeed a mess. I know it is a mess because i've gone to different continents and seen how other human beings behave and do things and i must say Nigeria always baffles me. The biggest problems i've noticed are these:

1.Mediocrity.

2.Large scale dishonesty.
3.Corruption.
4.Functional illiteracy.
5.Poor governance.
6.Ineffective legislature.
7.Lack of relevant legislature.
8.Insufficient infrastructure investment.
9.Disjointed national identity.
10.Deep rooted Tribalism(Anyone who has spent 5mins on Nairaland knows what i'm on about here)
11.Abuse & non-acknowledgement of citizen rights.
12.Untrustworthy judiciary/justice system.
13.Shocking lack of security.
14.Systemic abuse of power by elected officials at all levels.
15.Systemic wide spread embezzlement of unallocated wealth.
16.Nepotism!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The list could go on forever but this is to highlight the most pressing in my opinion. Not to castigate Nigeria totally as it is also a nation that produces hardworking and educated people who achieved many landmarks in various fields of human endeavour.
Unfortunately these achievements and their glory thereof have other countries as their recipients!!!

jerseyboy: Nigeria is The Fig Tree. Cursed

Mark 11:12-14

Jesus Curses a Fig Tree

12 The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. 13 Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs. 14 Then he said to the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.”

what Nigeria needs is a real psychopath or a real sociopath as a leader.... Because to fix this country, you will have to be a very crazy person, a genius and maniacally patriotic... Is that combination even possible?
Or
people can fix this country by learning how to ignore the government by doing things individually and understanding that the entity called "Nigerian Government" is jus a company that is setup to enrich the pockets of some alleged dumbasses..

all the above are possible because the leaders have failed to create a structure to curb it, why? Because they benefit from such malfeasance.

Lemme use ur Nepa Analogy for instance, there are loads of streets that ration light due to unavailability of transformers or over loaded ones, remember that ministry of power has annual budget yet they squander the money, force citizens to purchase their own transformers.

A citizen hangs illegal cable and gets arrested, a politician collects transformer meant for a whole street and Nepa fixes it for his personal use, who is fooling who? if the politicians were not culpable, the citizens will fall in line.

i agree Nigerians evade tax but they have a justifiable reason for that, the politicians squander it with nothing to show for it, who is the fool?
Do you think UK citizens will be paying tax if their govt is not responsible? Think again.

Do you think you have more corrupt tendencies than Americans? How many yahoo boys have picked half of what madoff picked in America?
The difference is that the structure created by American leadership handed him a life sentence while Tinubu and ibori were given titles.

Truth is, we can ridicule this country from now till tomorrow, it would only bounce back at us cos the so-called government we criticize is a product of us all. Whoever has led or will still lead this country will surely emanate from this current system and if we are to continue in this current wave, I fear for this land.
My people, we are the government!

Fine, Nigeria has given us few or no reason to be proud. In fact, there a thousand and one reasons why I could choose not be called a Nigerian but the question we need to ask ourselves is that in what way have we been part of the solution? Difficult one it is especially when a tree cannot make a forest but guess what? It sure can make a difference! Put that one tree in a scorching desert and it will be a source of hope to any traveler.

The poster has pointed a lot of fingers at the inefficiency of the country's leadership, I agree. But my point is that we do not need any form of re-branding or cosmetic approach to the various issues in this land. What we need is individual and collective REPENTANCE. It is then that the Nigeria of our dreams can be realized.

God bless Nigeria!!!

Nice one. At times, we take most of these things for granted while harbouring the illusion that Nigeria has not done anything for us. All through my stay in the university, my school fees did not exceed 12,000 Naira each session. A friend of mine is going to pay over 4 m as school fees for masters in Scotland.

considering the wealth and ecological priviledges of this country, 12k education is not what you deserve, countries producing less oil than Nigeria offer that your friend's 4m education for free to the citizens.

Believe me, with that 12k education, will u say u re educated? Where toto can get an 'A', is that what you call education?
For ur mind, govt is trying for handing you 12k education while minister for education buys a private jet with choice houses in europe SMH.
