In Scripture we see a clear order of headship in the family of God: “But there is one thing I want you to know: The head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.” (1 Corinthians 11:3)

Please note, in this passage the word “man” is referring to husbands, and the word “woman” is referring to wives. The context is addressing the order of headship in a Believing family. The Father is the head of Christ, Christ is the head of the husband, and the husband is the head of his wife.

This order of headship was established by God when He created Adam and Eve. God created Adam first, as the head and crown of His creation (Genesis 2:7). Then He created Eve second, out of Adam, as his wife, crown, and glory (Genesis 2:18-25). And in the Gospels, we see that our Father is in authority over Christ (John 5:30, John 14:28).

Notice that nowhere in this order of headship is a pastor listed. That’s right. . . contrary to what is taught and practiced in many churches today, pastors aren’t the head of husbands, and they most certainly aren’t the head of another man’s wife. Nor are they the head of Christ’s Bride — not on a global, national, or local level. Christ is the head of His body [the saints] both on earth and in heaven, globally, nationally, and at the local level.

“Now he [Christ] is far above any ruler or authority or power or leader or anything else—not only in this world but also in the world to come. God has put all things under the authority of Christ and has made him head over all things to the congregation, which is his body; it is made full and complete by Christ, who fills all things everywhere with himself.” (Ephesians 1:21-23)

“For a husband is the head of his wife as Christ is the head and the Savior of the congregation, which is his own body.” (Ephesians 5:23)

“Christ is also the head of the congregation, which is his body. He is the beginning, supreme over all who rise from the dead. So he is first in everything.” (Colossians 1:18)

Let’s go back to Ephesians 5 for a moment and read the full context. It says

“And further, submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. For wives, this means submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For a husband is the head of his wife as Christ is the head and the Savior of the congregation, which is his own body. As the congregation submits to Christ, so you wives should submit to your husbands in everything. For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the congregation. He gave up his life for her to make her holy and clean, washed by the cleansing of God’s word.He did this to present her to himself as a glorious congregation without a spot or wrinkle or any other blemish. Instead, she will be holy and without fault. In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives as they love their own bodies. For a man who loves his wife actually shows love for himself. No one hates his own body but feeds and cares for it, just as Christ cares for the congregation. And we are members of his body. As the Scriptures say, “A man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.” This is a great mystery, but it is an illustration of the way Christ and the congregation are one. So again I say, each man must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.” (Ephesians 5:21-33)


A husband’s relationship to his wife is an illustration of Christ’s relationship to His bride. Just as Christ is the head of His bride, husbands are the head of their wives. And just as we are to submit to the Lord, wives are to submit to their husbands and show them respect. And husbands are to love their wives as their own body and sanctify them with the word, just as Christ loves His bride and made her holy by washing her with word of God.

Much can be said about husbands who fail to love their wives as Christ loves His bride, and we will address that in a moment. But first, I’d like to address a concerning behavior among women today: insubmissive wives who dishonor God and their husbands by worshiping their pastor.

Pastor-worship is a HUGE problem among Believers today. Sometimes wives unknowingly look up to and admire their pastor in ways that they should only look up to and admire God and their husbands.

But first I’d like to address the predominant leadership-model in the church which actually encourages pastor-worship.

The predominant leadership-model in the church today is the one-man-pastor leadership-model, where one religious leader [often called "the pastor"] is looked up to as “THE man of God” over the congregation. He is exalted to a Moses-like position and is viewed as “the head” of the congregation [which is blasphemy against Jesus Christ and usurps His role, position, and authority in a Christian congregation ].

Down through the centuries, people who profess Christ have set up this leadership-model which puts pastors in the place of Jesus, and is actually antichrist, a term which also means “to stand in the place of Christ [as a replacement, substitute, or counterfeit].” Through various teachings, traditions, and methods — the attention and affections of the congregation are steered towards the pastor. It is assumed, implied, and sometimes directly stated that he is the most spiritual, the most mature, the most anointed, the most knowledgeable about God and the Bible, the closest to God, the most gifted, and has the most authority.

The one-man-pastor leadership-model also overloads the role or function of a pastor. The true function of a pastor is to serve as a shepherd and watchman of God’s flock by providing oversight, warning and protecting the flock from danger, guiding and encouraging the flock with sound doctrine, refuting and disciplining those who are in error, and leading by a godly example of spiritual maturity (1 Timothy 3:1-7, Titus 1:6-9, 1 Peter 5:1-3). The role and function of a pastor has been overloaded, through false teachings that assign the role of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit to the pastor.

For example, pastors are assigned the role of spiritual father, mediator [middle-men between God & the congregation], chief rabbi [master teachers], senior shepherd, spiritual covering, and the list goes on. The role of pastors today goes far beyond the Biblical role and function of a pastor. In effect, they are expected to be as God to the people, when the Lord never assigned them HIS role and placed them in such a burdensome idolatrous position. This is one of the reasons why many pastors today are stretched thin and burnt-out. They’re trying to function in a role that is reserved for God, which requires omnipotence and omniscience, and cannot be carried by any fragile human being.

This exaltation of “the pastor” and the overloading of his role has a powerful psychological and emotional affect on God’s people, especially women, whom I believe tend to be more emotionally influenced then men, and more apt to look up to and admire male authority figures — especially when you compound that with the the powerful influence of religion.

Am I saying this to make an excuse for wives who worship their pastors and absolve them of personal responsibility before God and their husbands? No. I’m saying this because we have to factor in that human beings are influenced by others, especially by religious authority figures. And when a flawed human being is immersed in a religious-system that revolves around the personality of the pastor, it feeds the fleshes tendency to idolize men, and encourages, facilitates, and even rewards pastor-worship.

This negative influence of today’s unbiblical leadership-model should not be ignored. People are already tempted within and struggling with their flesh, and a stumbling block is set before them when they are conditioned and trained in church to worship their pastors. It sets them up for a downfall and blinds them to the fact that they’re even worshiping their pastor, because it’s carried out under the guise of “honoring the man of God” “submitting to authority/covering” and “supporting the pastor’s vision.”

Even if your husband doesn’t obey the Gospel, that’s not an excuse or justification to rebel against him. God’s order of headship for the family still stands, whether your husband is a mature Believer or not —

"yield yourself to your husband’s headship and authority, and your godly example will speak to him without any words. And he will be won over by observing your pure and reverent life" (1 Peter 3:1-2).

Idolizing your pastor, comparing him to your husband, and wishing that your husband was more like him is a great error. It is lust and coveting, and a sure way to create more problems between you and your husband. God doesn’t want your husband to be more like your pastor. He wants him to be more like Christ. You are focused on the wrong man because your heart is in the wrong place. How would you feel if your husband wanted you to be like another woman and he praised her all the time? Now imagine how your husband feels, or better yet. . . ask him.

Another thing I have seen is wives building closeness or intimacy with their pastors — not sexual intimacy, but emotional and spiritual intimacy. This normally happens through “pastoral counseling” and working closely with their pastor in ministry.

Since the pastor is viewed as the most spiritual, mature, and knowledgeable person in the congregation, women often look to their pastor first as a trust-worthy person to confide in, share secrets with, and lean on for advice and counseling about their marriage, children, and other personal issues. Of course, there is nothing wrong with sharing personal things with a pastor and seeking wisdom from someone who is mature in the faith. But there is something wrong with a wife constantly going to her pastor for counseling and confiding in him more than she confides in her own husband. Besides Jesus, there shouldn’t be a man that a woman is closer to than her own husband.

Whenever confidential information and secrets are being shared with someone of the opposite sex, it creates closeness and intimacy. Coupled with the fact that there are certain dynamics between men and women [because God designed us to be attracted to each other], this can open the door to romantic chemistry, temptation, daydreaming, and fantasizing — all of which Jesus considers to be adultery of the heart. It begins with a vulnerable wife seeking counseling from a man she greatly admires. Next thing you know she is admiring how great of a listener he is, how he always has “a comforting word from the Lord,” and he’s always there to pray for her. With the right ingredients present, romantic feelings can develop and an emotional affair or even a physical affair can occur.

What women need to understand is that just because a man has a title doesn’t mean he isn’t susceptible to the ordinary desires of any other man. And just because we’re women of God doesn’t mean that we’re immune to falling into temptation when we’re vulnerable, weak, and looking for a shoulder to lean on. . . . especially a MAN’S shoulder. No, we shouldn’t think evil of pastors and assume that they’re all lust buckets who take advantage of women, but we do need to use discernment and wisdom with men whether they’re a pastor or not. Wives ought to be honest and realistic about our human nature and maintain boundaries with men to protect their marriage.

Down through the years,I have received numerous emails from wives and husbands whose marriage was destroyed or damaged by “pastoral counseling.” In every case, pastor-worship was the main ingredient.

Ladies, in marriage, I firmly believe that Jesus Christ is the first person to confide in, your spouse second, and outside of your spouse it’s best to confide in a trust-worthy mature woman of God. Women understand one another better, so if you’re having marital problems or family issues, it’s best and safest to confide in a sister or mother in the Lord: “Similarly, teach the older women to live in a way that honors God. They must not slander others or be heavy drinkers. Instead, they should teach others what is good. These older women must train the younger women to love their husbands and their children, to live wisely and be pure, to work in their homes, to do good, and to be submissive to their husbands. Then they will not bring shame on the word of God.” (Titus 2:3-5) The wisdom of God is for wives to be taught and counseled by older women regarding family issues, not for married women to lean on a man other than Jesus or their husbands.

The pastor was not listed because the issue being dealt with was the problem of lack of submission in the christian homes by the wives . Women were throwing away their head covering which they were to wear as sign of marriage ,it also represent the authority of the husband in their lives just like the moder day wedding ring. Paul had to instruct them about the husband authority being represented by the head covering .That doesn't take away the leadership of the church authority. Who's duty is to watch for souls of men and account before God on their behalf

A home is a family and is different to a house. A home or family can move from place to place, but the principles as stated by the word of God still apply.

A man as head of his wife does not mean Lord of the wife, it simply means a position of leadership which by the way is exemplified by the servant model and not that of Lordship over the wife.

Leadership by example , humility using the servant model as Christ did even to the point of washing the feet of his disciples.

Leadership is by no means the head of the local , national or global church.

Remember that Paul was dealing with a problem in the Corinthian church . He wasn't just preaching. Reports came to him that some women one to church without their headgear. Every married woman is supposed to cover her head as a singh that she's married. It represents the husband authority. Shamefaced ness and submission. Just like in India where a married woman must put a Red dot on her fore head. We have some alhajis wife's in Nigeria who have to cover their faces and legs in black black to show they were married to alhajis . So report came to paul that some married women don't cover again because of liberty in Christ . And paul had to address it. It's not a spiritual teaching but a cultural teaching
