Now, this topic was inspired by this thread https://www.nairaland.com/1038040/ideal-car-n80k-monthly-salary

Overview: many people are of the opinion that while a car purchase may not be so hard, car maintenance could be difficult and very harsh on the pocket of a low - medium income earner. Now, there are also some people who would tell you that having a small car to run around with even if your income isn't so high is necessary at times. Some cite reasons ranging from "car helps image & assists business", "car aids movement of more people and goods", "you car could actually be earning you more money via picking up people to & from work for a fee", "cost of fueling your car (especially if its a fuel efficient one), even at 100naira per litre is CHEAPER than cost of public transportation, especially post-subsidy removal era)"

So, house, on the average, how much do you spend on your car each month? Please state the type of car and engine type (or at least the make and engine type if you have privacy concerns). In giving us your amount (or close estimate), please bear in mind that its not just fueling costs we r talking about here, but also cost of replacement of spares, servicing e.t.c. if however, you've only spent very large sums on your car just a few times, point that out too.

Again house, a monthly average maintenance cost of your car. Thanks. Over to you smiley

My Oga, well detailed analysis. Thanks for d format u've laid down which i hope others will follow.

Though ur post will serve more to educate NLers based in the UK, even I have picked up some things. Thanks again. I should have led the pack, but right now i do not currently have a car exclusively for my use, tho my money goes into it from time whenever I need it (which has been very few times in the last 10 months). & besyds, until next month, i'm still earning NYSC allowance cheesy

I've already referred two friends to this thread, one to post his experience, & the other to pick up tips as he intends buying a car next month on a total monthly income of about 140k

More analyses are welcome.

Here’s my attempt because I don’t really keep track of how much I spend on gas but the insurance and toll figures are accurate.

Gas
Vehicle #1
$3.95 per gallon X 18.5 gallon (Fuel tank capacity) X 4 fill ups = $292 per month ($3504 per year)

Vehicle #2
$3.75 X 20 gallons X 3 fill ups = $225 per month ($2700 per year)

Vehicle #3 (Mostly weekend and traveling -- very bad on gas)
$3.95 X 26.4 gallons X 1 fill up per month = $104 ($1248 per year)

Cost of Gas per year for all vehicles = 3504 + 2700 + 1248 = $7,452
Full Insurance coverage for all 3 vehicles with at least x2 the required State minimum for Liability coverage $310 per month = $3,720 per year
Toll = $6 per day ($3 one way) = $600 per year

Total cost per year excluding maintenance for Vehicle #1 (warranty expired) is $11,772.

I need to move closer to work to avoid driving this much and paying the stup!d toll that’s about to go up to $4 next year!

$11,772 per annum excluding maintenance! I guess this explains why americans tend to offload their cars before the warranty expires (especially warranties exceeding 5 years).

@Bolded, i think the annual costs should be higher, since u spend $6 a day x 5 working days x 52 weeks. No?

You are right! It should be about $1500 if I account for 2 weeks vacation.

You're also right about getting rid of vehicles when the warranty expires but it's not just about the warranty. I tend to get infatuated about the next "new" thing after about < 4 years.
Also, at about $105 being charged per hour, I can’t even imagine what a transmission or engine will cost to replace on the ever complicated German cars, and I don’t feel like finding out the hard way. grin The warranty gives me a perfect way out of rationalizing my new purchase.

I’ve visited about 5 dealerships in the last 3 weekends to test drive a few of the brand new cars/trucks that just came out for 2013.

Subaru BRZ --- this will make a perfect daily commuter for me but too small to be made a workhorse. Still rationalizing…
MB GL450 --- better engine and interior than the prior ones but I'm not sure it’s worth upgrading to but the horror stories about MB's 7 speed tranny dey hunt me!
BMW M5 --- me dreaming, not happening…too expensive! Didn't even get to drive the damn thing!

Seeing what Siena, and Wallie posted here, I think I should stick tight to my tax-free economy, and govt here...

I drive a Corolla LE 2004. V4. Barely 2 years old.
I spend 1500 naira weekly on gas = 6000/monthly = 72,000
3500naira/monthly goes to servicing = 42,000
MOT = NO
Road Tax = there are no taxable roads in Nigeria.
Annual Car Registration = 10,000 (actually covers all taxes)

All makes 124,000 naira in a year. I think that's ok for corper like me.

Re: How Much Do You Spend On Your Car Monthly On The Average? by manny4life(m): 4:56pm On Sep 18, 2012
Let me see

Since I have only 1 car

My car uses about 15mpg, so with an average of 13,000 miles annually, so that's

13,000 annual miles/15mpg = 867 gallons x $3.85 per gallon = $3,337.95

Insurance is $155 x 12 = $1,860

Maintenance coverage is $140/month = $1,680 annually

So, $3,337 + $1,860 + $1,680 = $6,877 annually or $573 monthly.

This is not as bad compared to using public transportation

i currently use a honda accord 1994 model.on the average i expend about #5000 on fuel daily.perhaps because i take a lot of trips to the site everyday.maintenance is just about #7000 monthly but once in a while i need to change some parts.due to enormous potholes,my absorber, shaft and boris are the main culprits.using a car in lagos is quite different from every other part of nigeria.personally,i'd prefer a fuel efficiant SUV because of lagos roads.i used to use a suzuki and i was in heaven because of its minimal fuel consumption.i think i spent an average of #2000 on my suzuki.

That's a lot of oil! 5,5 litres of oil monthly?? shocked Where's it all going? Unless you mean 1,5 litres per month (still on the high side) your engine might need more than routine maintenance sooner than you think. My Audi S8 uses about 1,7 litres of oil between services, which is about every 10,000 miles.

I love travelling, so i have a problem.
1- I visit Enugu Ngwo from Onitsha every friday and returns on mondays. I visit my village from Enugu on those trips which is about ten minutes drive. Then i cruise around town until 12am. Sometimes 2 am or 3.
All this takes about 90 liters of fuel @N97. Sometimes N105. Add oil N2800.

Infact i dont know how much. Around 30k or so
Re: How Much Do You Spend On Your Car Monthly On The Average? by tsmack: 5:28pm On Sep 18, 2012
Let me try.

I drive a pilot and...

I spend N6k on fuel per week. Thats N6,000x4 = N24,000/month = N288,000/year
Insurance was one off = N300,000/year
Servicing is about 9k every 3months (i.e. N9,000 x 4) = N 36,000/year
General maintenance (still in good shape, so i dont expect to buy anything
till the next 2years (did i hear a Big Amen!)

Estimated annual expenses N591,000/year

It will jump up considerably if i factor in the average risk of driving in Lagos i.e. 400k per annum for the risk premium...

Very good topic for boasters.
You will find out that every nairalander owns a car today. Lol.. Well no one can tell in Nigeria, how much he or she spends unless you are a machine, on average i think i spend around 20 k monthly. Changing oil and fueling... Occassionaly changing minor parts.
Re: How Much Do You Spend On Your Car Monthly On The Average? by mrrock: 5:50pm On Sep 18, 2012
@siena.
Yes, you're right!. Seems you know much about these things.
After I put the first galon it would be almost full, the second galon is always to top-up. I rememeber sometime I asked the mechanic whether to just go without the second galon but he guaged the oil and advised I top up a little more. So I must always buy the second galon. But what I do the next time is just buy one more galon to add to the last.
NB: I don't use cars until it require repairs, once I notice any repair issues I will sell it immediately and replace. I learnt from a friend this is the only way to avoid mechanics wahala.

no wonder.the only "traffic" in akure is from cathedral to the market which would last about 3mins.i drive almost 3hours to the office everyday.from office to the site is another 2 hours drive.factor the fuel to be wasted in traffic and you realise akure is a wonderful place to drive a car.cant wait for the light rail to be completed.my car will go on holiday.

4k fills your tank in this jonathan era?you're lucky
