He did indeed ask God to take away the cup from him but terminated this plea with the following words, "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done."

God's will was for Jesus to taste death for all men as prophesied by Isaiah :

"He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth." - Isaiah 53:9

Also by David :

"For you will not leave my soul among the dead or allow your holy one to rot in the grave." - Psalm 16:10
