Why Are Some Nigerians Crazy About Title? by Feraz(m): 10:41pm On Oct 29, 2012 |
Good evening all! Recently, I went to a function and while they were calling out the names of the guests, I noticed a common trend which was attaching a title before the person's name. It reminded me of when I was in my school's lab and a guest came looking for someone. He told the lab. attendant that he was looking for Mr..... and the lab attendant replied harshly, "Is it Mr.....or Engr.....?" The guest was like "oh, sorry! I mean Engr...." before he replied that he was the one. In my mind, I was like WTF??!!!! When I say title, I don't mean Mr./Miss/Mrs; I mean titles like Pastor Mr., Sir Engr., Bishop Evangelist (is it that both don't preach the word of God?), Dr. Engr., Prof Chief abi na Chief Prof.? Even our supposed lecturers are not left out of this? Try addressing a Dr. or Prof. as Mr. (even if it is a mistake) and watch his reaction....Some have as many as four titles.....does title mean achievement for some?.....Is it only in Nigeria or am I the only one who has noticed this? What are your views on this? |

Chief Dr. Barrister (Mrs) Dame Lolo Patience Jonathan Obama is a lawyer, but have you ever heard him referred to as Barrister Barack Obama? Same as Hillary Clinton. Same as Bill Gates, have you ever heard him referred to as Dr. Bill Gates? Same as Jeffrey Sachs (for those who study Economics), has he ever been referred to as Professor Jeffrey Sachs in your textbooks? We attach so much prestige to this title of a thing in Nigeria. 3 Likes |

Especially from my muslim end... if you dont put Alhaji or Alhaja before their name.. na wahaala you dey find. More also, Try and watch political parties convention and see the way they will pronounce just one person names for 5 minutes with different kind of adjectives. 1 Like |

I dont see the essence of having multiple titles. Its really senseless. Those being called that way just want people to know their status / class. I'm happy there is nuffin like Chief sotware engr bla bla or Mr Programmer/ web designer bla bla in the IT world |

IMO a lot of Nigerians like recognition they want people to know what they have achieved which doesn't really make sense to me, where I work a lot of scientists that are foreigners will introduce themselves as their name but Nigerians will either put Dr. or Prof. its just the trend here 1 Like |

Feraz: Even our supposed lecturers are not left out of this? Try addressing a Dr. or Prof. as Mr. (even if it is a mistake) and watch his reaction....U can't compare d stress encountered while studying in abroad and here in naija. Some Doctors were ridiculed n humiliated 2 d xtent of becoming a slave 2 dia profs during d course of study and u dont want them 2 take it personal? U must be kidding. A lecturer dishonoured an invitation letter in my skul just bcoz his title wasn't included. |

I noticed it too. I represented my mum at a PTA meeting at my younger brother's school. Parents were asked to write down their names and I was seeing titles Dr Sososo. I was annoyed, I just wrote down my name and left. I also attended a concert where the MC called out a minister's name wrong. He said "I have the pleasure of inviting Rev Duro" and he was called off stage, he later returned and said "I have the pleasure of inviting Proffesor Durojaiye BlaBlaBla". I was like wtf? In God's presence? Would Paul have done that Bullcrap mentality. |

Lol...The trend is worse among lecurers...there is this lecturer in my school that recently became a professor, if you mistakenly refer to him as Dr. the eye he will give you eh, you will understand and correct yourself sharp sharp. . Is it necessary to include where you schooled to your name? Prof. D.O. Bsc(London) MBA (Manchester) M.Sc (Connecticut) PHd(Liverpool) 4 Likes |
