Where I'm from we collect the money quite alright (to reflect our accepting their offer) but return it immediately (without even opening it, to drum it into them that the lady's not for sale) and then immediately literally hand the lady over to her mother-in-law (cs everyone knows she's the koko factor as far as the bride's welfare/well-being in the new home is concerned).
We however collect the yams. grin
Enuff poundo for the next 7-8wks. . . . . . oooh yum yum yummy tongue

Who are we even giving away next? We seem to have run out of babes in my clan o. . . undecided . . .and yams grin

Re: How Much Is A Woman Worth? by Nobody: 8:10pm On Feb 20, 2008
people let me give you an insight.
In some parts of Igboland  for instance the brideprice is not the main issue
They can "charge you 50 or 20 naira.
but the commodities wey you go buy.
God help you.

I saw a list in another thread,I'll find it.
what's the point of a small bride price and then you have a prospectus that'll fill one 80 leaves notebook.
and most of these things are actually for the "umunna" aka kinsmen not even the parents.
some cultures are so strict and the list cannot be amended or the girls father will have to provide the contents himself to appease these hungry umunna

But many men are standing up to these traditions and stating that their girls are not for sale.
In some places, the more educated the girl is,the more they want
if the man dey overseas, the more they want
Re: How Much Is A Woman Worth? by ifyalways(f): 8:13pm On Feb 20, 2008
Arms ke  shocked shocked its forbidden.
you want to desecrate our land ? the gods forbid.

good to know that you are still game.get the dough coming guy while we keep your free brides fit for you.whats more, its virgins we are talking of here.you think you can handle that?heard you oyibonized guys cant stand for more than 30 mins and even at that, its once per week.  cheesy
Re: How Much Is A Woman Worth? by Chacal: 8:20pm On Feb 20, 2008
@ Nwando,

May God Bless you. cheesy cheesy

In other words, Nigerians in diaspora have no chance at all but to fall to their cheap schemes of milking money. . . . .
Interesting!!!!!!!!! Is there a way out of this schitzo?
Why should kinsmen make fortunes outta the bridegroom? What was their contribution to the development of the bride in question?

@ Ifyalways,

What do u have to say to this new evidence against y'all?
Spit on it cos i am waiting for u to clear the air on this Igbo wedding kizzack.

Virgins? Nah. . . . . . I aint Kanu Nwankwo.
I cant be bovvered if these chics are Vs or Non-Vs. . . . It doesn't count for me or any of ma mates.
All we need is a wife material.
Re: How Much Is A Woman Worth? by ifyalways(f): 8:52pm On Feb 20, 2008
@chacal,but i told you that yesterday. cheesy
N56 naira plus 20 A3 typing sheets,front and back.
its nothing anyway,it cant gulp more than mere 10k£ cheesy
the most important thing is that the brides price is N56 naira, abi cheesy
see you around, soon.your brides are waiting.

@nwando,thanks for the info though most ppl i know are kicking seriously against the tradition.its quite difficult but if the family stands their ground, there is little or nothing the umunna can do,at most the skip the wedding.

no wonder there are so many bachelors

poor gys no EGO no marriage
Re: How Much Is A Woman Worth? by Nobody: 9:17pm On Feb 20, 2008
let me clarify that the list above is only from a particular village.
It varies from village to village.
I don't think Mr Nwando bought all of that, not even anywhere close.

The george wrappers and laces are non negotiable in my village though
since the boxes are displayed on that day.
Most girls usually help the man out and add their own wrappers and lace blouses and nobody will know lipsrsealed
some of us girls are willing to work with our "cashless"mates

my dear it's not only Igbos, I think the East and their environs including Rivers and akwaIbom are the worst in this whole thing.
Than God I'm not a man cheesy
Re: How Much Is A Woman Worth? by Nobody: 9:24pm On Feb 20, 2008
see this other community in River state that took drastic measures when the town was overflowing with senior girls.

HAVE you seen the announcement by the elders of Ekpeye Clan in Ahoada Local Government Area of Rivers State? If you are a bachelor in search of a wife, or a married man in search of a second wife (for whatever reasons whatsoever), please start heading towards Ahoada, where the elders in deference to the pull of market forces, are offering a generous discount on bride price. According to their announcement, anyone who wants a wife can now get one from Ahoada with a smile! Ekpeye Women for Sale!. We offer good bride price! Enjoy the discount while it lasts! Offer is on first come, first served basis!

Lest you think I am making this up, then please read The Vanguard newspaper of January 24, 2006, p.8. The relevant story is titled "Community woos suitors for "overripe" spinsters - slashes bride price to N15,000". The traditional ruler of the Ugboji Clan of Ekpeye Eze Innocent Odum, concerned that his kingdom is littered with grown-up girls of marriageable age, who in spite of their beauty, education and good breeding, could not find anyone to marry them, decided to set up a committee titled "The Bride Price Committee". Its term of reference was to investigate the immediate and remote causes of the seeming inability of Ekpeye babes to attract men and to make appropriate recommendations to correct the situation.

http://www.utexas.edu/conferences/africa/ads/1482.html

so david,I've found you a discount already
Re: How Much Is A Woman Worth? by 4Him(m): 9:32pm On Feb 20, 2008
My uncle and his family actually live in Ahoada . . . i shall ask them for a discount wife when next i go home to visit. tongue

An uncle of mine who married yoruba had an even longer list. It filled about 4 leaves of a higher education note book.
Re: How Much Is A Woman Worth? by Chacal: 9:39pm On Feb 20, 2008
I dont really think the number of items matter. . . . Its the value of it that counts.

In Nwando's list, i saw Ovaltine, Snails, Body cream, soap and reh reh reh.
This can't be more than 10 pounds. . . . Igbo boys should step up and HELP these overripe spinsters. grin grin grin

Ekpeye babes should start migrating to Lagos to help themselves.
I am sure there are overripe brothers waiting to get hitched as well.
Re: How Much Is A Woman Worth? by Gamine(f): 9:42pm On Feb 20, 2008

Re: How Much Is A Woman Worth? by 4Him(m): 9:44pm On Feb 20, 2008
@ chacal, those things are cheap. You wait until you start having to buy the yams (those things are expensive bo!) and the cow (yoruba families demand this) . . .
Re: How Much Is A Woman Worth? by imaibehe(f): 9:54pm On Feb 20, 2008
