Do not recommend without proper reason. Even in developing websites, php isn't a first language. 1 Like |

C# if u want to work on the .NET framework its clean, OO by default and u'll get productive in no time. JAVA is also good doh I dnt do JAVA I have a friend who swears by it. Its OO by default with rich libraries too n its cross platform. PHP is good too I'v seen guyz do great web apps with it Python as well. Bottom line: which eva u choose be good @ it. Its not d language but rather the individual. 5 Likes |

I really appreciate javanian for creating ds thread! (Would love to meet him/her in person smday if God xo pleases. I apreciate those that av contributed constructively to this thread. I hope to c naija programmers become hotcakes in d international market. I don't mean to create any any confusion or debate but just want to patch xome loose ends. Firstly, html, css, javascript and php are not programming languages. HTML is simply a markup language that only a browser understands. You can try to read the content of a page with your textbox or texarea and see what it displays. Ur raw html codes. You processor does not act on HTML codes, ur browser does. CSS( cascade style sheet) is best at what it is stylesheet. Jt to add flavour to the presentation of a n HTML page. Developed with the oop perspective of reusability. Although, css is being imported in other apps like LWUIT for j2me and phonegap for rendering of pages Also javascript like you said is used to add dynamism to a page and make it more lively. Bt its just a script like an applet in java. To carry oit a specific task on as needed basis. Javascript, css cannot stand alone as they needed to be added to a webpage b4 both can b functional xo idont think they qualify to be called a programming language but they are real deal esp the javascript library jQuery. Its a very great wonder. For php, have you ever checkd d processes that are running on ur system and by chance u saw php ![]() To the topic, what Language should I start with, I will ask first do you understand algorithms and flowcharts, if yes, then can you write little programs with QBASIC ![]() 27 Likes 1 Share |

Zet72: Thanks Javenia I have read the whole tread,so my question is this, can somebody who hav no prior knowledge or study computer related subject learn programming if yes like how long & can the person be expert & how do I start . To become an expert in programming, the time doesn't matter as long as you have smthn to show for it. Also, when u want to study programming, discard all d ideas u once had abt computer!!! Xome think bcoz they can use ms word, programming wud b easy!!! Lol To learn programming, b willing to task your brain day and night!! You should first study algorithm which simply means process of getting things done in the simplest explainable way. E.g. How do you sum 2 numbers ![]() 10 Likes 1 Share |

ibnquasale: i am a very confused person when it comes to choosing an "appropriate" programming languageto develope front-end for data base u can use CSPro or EpiData but cspro is more flexible, both are user friendly, then for analysis u can use SPSS, it is best for me in terms of analysis, u can easily learn them from d tutorial on d help file after installation. Thanks |

ciphoenix: Do not recommend without proper reason. Even in developing websites, php isn't a first language.Exactly, there are scripting languages like dreamweaver 8.1 that is more friendly since it incorporates php ,php.net, Asp.net, C++, etc and doesn't need much coding if u are a good interface designer, and if u don't know how to design, u code while it does d designing. |

..actually nothing is ever easy, but i'll lyk to introduce some very simple languages that you can take up and grab in a very short period of time (1)BASIC(Beginners All Purpose Symbolic Instruction Code) (2)LUA-a popular, lightweight programming language (3)Microsoft Visual Basic (4)Python you can read this short blog to get more info & development materials on those four languages http://begginersprogramming..com/ 1 Like
