Lady Winona: I don't see where the doctor had erred. He had simply explained d situation in the way that any layman can understand it. If he had said that her PCV was static at 18L/L despite 40 pints of packed cells been infused due to possible aplasia of the red blood cell evidenced by lack of erythrocytes query cause, would you have understood him? Let's be fair here.

i will tell you the doctor's fault in my own "layman's" view.
the doctor checked and found a low PCV, administered blood and despite this found even lower levels, he decided to administer more....and more and more.......
its like saying a car engine has a low level of oil so you add more, you check and it has a lower level so you add more and more.....

why administer more fluids when the problem hasnt been found. please note that there was no mention of the ailment from the doctor's statement. this implies the doctor did not conduct the proper tests or did not refer the patient to a specialist on time.

i expected to read something like 'Bisi was diagnosed of an acute case of XXXXXXX after several tests. this resulted in her having a low PCV despite administering 40 pints of blood to her over a YYY period.

This is the main issue with some Nigerian Doctors and the way they handle ailments....am very sure she would have first been treated with malaria, then thyphoid then more blood and more blood

It was probably negligence. If she kept receiving blood does this not indicate there was internal bleeding somewhere?

Irrespective of the aetiology of the disease, the truth is that u are there to treat the patient first and then the disease. Take for instance, this patient that is obviously severely anemic. Do u first wait to find out the cause of the anemia while she dies from the anemia itself or do we first resuscitate in this case, by giving packed red cells or in places where it is lacking sedimented cells under frusemide cover? I wld choose the later cos at the end of the day, ur aetiology, if eventually found will have little or no meaning if ur patient is already dead. I'm sure they know the cause of the disesase but it's against the ethics of medicine to reveal it for public's consumption. An autopsy will also be useful here.

Nigerians and their armchair criticism, was any of the tabloids there?for the record,UCH ibadan has a team with multidisciplinary specialities on every case needed, meaning all needed specialities would have been seeing her daily. Its unfortunate the confidentiality clause stops the medical team from saying their parts all the time, but to say she lacked access to specialist care @ UCH ibadan Nigeria, trust me ther's no better place she would ave gotten it in naija.

All this African witchery business is probably the reason why doctors failed to diagnose her.
"She's isn't making enough blood, let's just pump her with more maybe the witches will get full."

Have you guys ever seen witches sef?

phemmydiya: We (Nigerian) fail to understand that every death should be diagnosis thoroughly so as to prevent the same occurring. Develop countries use on usual death like this to prepare future cases. Nothing wrong in NMA looking at a cases like this away from general public. RIP Adieu Bidi Komolafe.

I assume several tests were carried out but no concrete diagnosis. They should've just gone through the unorthodox means. This is Africa, this is not the first time someone is experiencing something that doesn't exactly meet the eye.

The diagnosis..probably disseminated intravascular coagulopathy secondary to post abortal sepsis.the diagnosis might explain the amount of blood transfused, however the platelet count and wbc was not stated by the doctor.another differential could be bone marrow failure due to overwhelming sepsis.but would have loved to have a post mortem result to further educate ourselves.

Josh316: If her PCV kept going down, it's likely she was suffering one of many blood disorders- Pernicous Anaemia, Bone Marrow dysplasia or even Leukemia. If she was not refered to a consultant hematologist on time to properly diagnose her condition then the doctors would have erred.

Tooo many question marks about the cause of death. Only God knows the truth.

Medicine in Nigeria is 20 years behind other developed countries so I can't respect any comments made by any medical practitioner in Nigeria.

Pregnancy is a delicate thing and anyone can die from it. Many situations are compounded by the quack abortion doctors all over the place. Women please take note. Don't play 'chinchin' with your life.

Keep your body for your husband and limit the risk your body is exposed to by not sleeping with anything in trousers!

Moderator, why place this unfortunate news in the celebrity or gossip column?
It should have been placed in the medical section where doctors would inform us better.
Instead, we have people who have no idea that the pelvic and the abdominal cavity can hold enormous amount of blood, especially over a period of 3 months, and after developing coagulopathy from a missed pregnancy or previous transfusions.

This tragedy is not a joke, but a consumptive reaction whereby the patient most likely failed to clot her own blood as occurs in the introduction of products of conception into the maternal circulation.

Oh, by the way, I don't entertained street comments or si.-l-ly jokes from non-healthcare workers, or those making fun of other people's tragedy.

It's amazing how backward how medical care still is, how do you have a doctor who believes in juju, then leave the medical profession and go and join babalawo, many people have died in Nigeria for stuffs that they should not have died from, my wife when she was in Nigeria felt tied and went to the hospital at first she was given drips they collected 25k and a week later asked her to come for blood I refused since she was joining me in the uk in a few days when she got to the uk she went for test and there was nothing wrong with her, nothing at all, I know this is strange but when you feel sick google whatever you think is wrong with you, so that your doc just does not pump you full of drips

Nice suggestion. Ignorance isn't an excuse, google is your friend. Do your research very well before you visit any hospital in Nigeria. A Doctor's verdict, though professional, may not be sound. Secondly, try to seek a second opinion from another Doctor/hospital on a diagnosis if possible. Enough said!!!
