A similar topic with similar pictures was on nairaland front page 3 or 4 years ago. Back then there was an argument between those who say that the practice should be legalised and those against legalisation.

Those in favour of legalising it argued that it would be better to legalise and regulate these mini-refineries. They argued that the government can not stop the practice, but that legalising it would create employment, lead to better practices and boost domestic science and technology.

Sadly this has become a very lucrative business in the niger delta but also highly deadly as fire outbreaks is a common occurence and they die alot. They build these mini refineries in the creeks and ship the fuel in boats to land, they've already paid the nigerian navy stationed on the creek to grant them free passage. Now this is becoming a problem cause the buisness is gratually turning to cartels and mafia's with bosses on top and rival. This is shaping up to be nigeria's version of the mexican drug cartels. So the government should take note and do something now that it is in it's infancy.

Need anyone say more?
As a matter of fact, some of these activities are sponsored by 'elders' and some politicians in the Niger Delta.

bikokwe: Well, I am not by any way surprised at the pics smiley, this doesn't happen in Bayelsa alone but many other states in Nigeria and the Government are surely aware of the happenings. This is what happens when government decides to neglect its citizens, the quest for survival begin and ll consequences are damned! Even the so called JTF collect bribes from transporters that carry illegal petroleum products from state to state. I remember the period when lots of explosion occurred in homes using kerosene, obviously those products were not properly refined hence the explosions. filling stations buy illegal products and mix it with the pure products for more gains.Lots and lots of 'big men' are making millions from this and will go any length to fight anyone who dares to stand on their way. It's a shame that we as Nigerian have been programmed to be illegal, it seems the culture has become epidemic or probably a genetic disorder. Nigeria has a long way to go. Some believe there is no way out but I know someday courageous leaders will arise and fight this monster to called corruption, resources will be equitably distributed, standard of living will increase, Naira value will increase, Jobs will be created, dignity will be restored, we will have value for life, what to eat, where to live won't be a problem, education will be affordable etctera etcetra. I am preparing myself and I know many others are as well. Long live Nigeria, Long live the most populace black Nation, Long Live our motherland. We are blessed and blessings will not become curses. Amen

Utopia indeed!! Let it begin with you.

Beaf was the chief proponent of legalisation. Others argued that the process damages the environment and cannot be cleaned up, therefore it should be illegal.

Its just that our leaders are so wicked and heartless, i dont blame these guys, man must survive! Afterall in Nigeria it is all man 4 himself, nobody gives a crap about u. I wish d govt can look into this and try and see d positives by creating local small scale refineries that could combat fuel scarcity.
Re: Pictures Of Illegal Oil Refineries In Bayelsa by Trudprism: 7:06am On Jan 18, 2013
The greatest problem here is the pollution that results when the refiners break pipelines or vandalize well heads to get the oil to refine. These pipe lines and wellheads are usually abandoned by the operators for fear of their lives. They do not have what it takes to plug back the leaks and what results is the magnitude of pollution you see in the Niger Delta. This is more than serious.

i dont blame them.. they have to survive somehow.. if nigerian leaders had sense, one of the first investments they would do would be to build legal refineries in areas like this and provide employment for residents of these areas.. Instead they will steal oil from these people, pollute their lands and send the oil abroad to refine in the process creating foreign jobs and then importing oil back and using subsidy wayo to steal cheat us..

These guys have and operate an oil well yet they don't look like Otedola,Adenuga and Tinubu. What the fucckk are they doing there upon the fact that they never get to pay royalties to the government?

Even in the face of oil, I still see and perceive poverty around them.

Disastrous working conditions no saftey of any kind... If the atmospheric physics I studied in my final year and. HSE courses I enrolled for are anytin to go by, then I think this guys are already dead... Cos wen the health implications start surfacing no specialist hospital will be able to save this guys.m so I just hope the money is worth it.

All the same these guys have talent. Cos for illiterates to build their own refinery, maybe its a wake up call for NNPC

Re: Pictures Of Illegal Oil Refineries In Bayelsa by Tetrians(m): 7:46am On Jan 18, 2013
Primary Issue - Non-existent social services, absent elected goverment, present in name NO ACTION & NO CLUE busy scamming the people. So citizens would have to self-govern and fend for their own needs hence persistent illegal activities and criminal behaviour nation wide.

Secondary Issue - Reference to Bayelsa state billboard advert the 'Rub' should have read 'Rob' or is it me that's stupid?
Re: Pictures Of Illegal Oil Refineries In Bayelsa by JimmyBoy1: 7:48am On Jan 18, 2013
To me, I see poverty here, before seeing the crime, apparently nobody cares about these people, so they help themselves anyway possible.

Re: Pictures Of Illegal Oil Refineries In Bayelsa by Edenitis(m): 8:22am On Jan 18, 2013
If the goons in Abuja have any sense in their heads, they will come together and find ways to regulate
what they stupidly call "Illegal" refineries.
These refineries should be given standards and allocations of crude oil which they should pay for at the same
rate the crude is sold to OPEC less shipping cost.
This way, jobs will be created, fuel will be cheap and available in the areas where it is being produced,
youth restiveness will be reduced etc etc

There are so many advantages to regulating and regularising local refineries
