Most Latter Day Saint denominations are derived from the Church of Christ established by Joseph Smith, Jr. in 1830. The majority of "Prairie Saint" denominations were established after the death of Smith by the remnants of the saints who did not go west with Brigham Young. The Rocky Mountain denominations are various sects who broke from the LDS Church after its abandonment of polygamy in 1890. Other denominations are defined by either a belief in Joseph Smith as a prophet, or acceptance of the Book of Mormon as scripture. Mormonism is generally considered distinct from mainstream Protestantism and is more akin to restorationism in believing that Smith restored the original Church of Christ to the Earth.

One of the problems of Roman Catholicism is its doctrine of salvation. It denies justification by faith alone and requires works done through the Roman Catholic sacramental system in order for a person to be justified before God. Justification, of course, is the legal declaration by God where he proclaims the sinner righteous in his sight.

The Bible clearly teaches that this justification is by faith and denounces any addition of works to it.

Rom. 10:4, "For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes."

John 2:12 - "After this He went down to Capernaum, He and His mother, and His brothers, and His disciples; and there they stayed a few days."

No verse in the bible reads "the bible has 66 books". So, maintaining the the bible MUST HAVE 66 books is against sola scriptura principle.

The catholic church believes only the parts of the bible that don't contradict their traditions. They therefore can claim to justify all these extra and contra-biblical teachings because those "parts" of the bible were probably "figurative" and not meant to be applied literally.
 So therefore when all those millions of verse say that God alone forgives sins - they were not really meant to be taken literally.
But when Jn 20 said the apostles forgives and people will be forgiven, they take it literally. They apparently have picked which parts of the scriptures to deem acceptable or not, meant to be taken literally or not. and this selection appears to be based on whether or not that particular verse contradicts their own traditions or canon.

sola scriptura cannot ascertain HOW MANY books the bible should have.

If, by sola scriptura, you are referring to this passage =>

2 Timothy 3:15-17

There is one outstanding problem: the bible was compiled and approved about 320 years after Paul wrote this to letter Timothy. So, which scripture was Paul referring to??


Obviously here, and in most references to "the Scriptures" that we find in the New Testament, Paul is speaking of the Old Testament; so if this passage is going to be used to set the limits on inspired authority, then the entire New Testament will be excluded.
