It is not about govt folding it arm, How many times will this same government close this market on this same reason. What the government want is money, get it. Afterall after their warning few days ago, the traders carried out a marketwide cleanup of the market, yet the market was still closed. The simple answer is irresponsiblity, insensitivity and greed
Born 2be Rich:

So because 80% of the traders are igbos the govt should fold their arms while the filt and smelling odour continue abi? When a foriegn website tommorow rates lagos as one of the dirties cities in the world, am sure you will be one of the first set of people insulting fashola for failling to meet up to his vision of making lagos a mega city...

GboyegaD:

What arrangement has he in place for them? I don't have a challenge with him displacing them provided he's made an arrangement of where to relocate them to otherwise, it is worthless. Besides, my understanding of your post is that by transforming Lagos to a Mega city, residents of Ajegunle, Ijora Badia etc should be awaiting their displacement soonest right?

1) In the case of the market, the government is not shutting the market permanently. Once the market executives sign an agreement that they will ensure that there's no street trading, that the market will be kept clean, etc the market will be reopened.

2) In the case of slum dwellers, if you've got documents showing that you are the legal owner of the land, you will be paid compensation or resettled. If you are an illegal squatter, then do not expect to get compensation. It would be wrong for government to compensate illegality, which will only encourage more people to break the law.

Why not let us all do some follow up here on this issue. How?
1. someone to give us some pictures before the Market was closed.
2. then we need to see the situation now when every thing is under locks and keys.
3 when finally the state govt begin anything there, someone should send some pictures here.

After comparing these three stages, that is when we can come up to comment right and well

Is it not worrying that the closure of the market falls within d same period of government is having legal issues with the ''Market Leadership'', (since 2012 till date) the President has been detained by Lagos state govt, using it's Judiciary arm as the weapon.
With the Leadership in confusion who guides the market??.
If you see the market as bn dirty, is closing it the solution?, rmba Ladipo is a ''cluster of street shops'' meanin it's not even planned, so if the government is bn sincere abt dis,dn it should reolcate dm. To a well planned and mapped out area, considering the number of pple it employs, issues it helps resolve, family dat make their living there and bn the largest autopart mart in the State.
Or
A ppp btw d traders assoc. d landlords & state govt, to restructure the area like Tejuosho mkt, (gradually raising an organised mart, wt modernized structures and facilities and access roads).
Or
Set up a meeting with d whateva is left of the Leadership or an interim Leadership and Landlords in the area to av LAWMA personnels e.g 30 or 40 attached to d mart and 2 trucks, their job is to kip the mart clean. Sweepin the entire area everymornin by 5:00am or 6:00am or evening 10pm, dis is also a form of employment and the bills and salary of workers are sorted by the Traders association & Landlords.

Just my own idea and view on the Matter!!!!

1) Relocate the traders: The government has done this many times and it all leads to the same thing. . .insults will be heaped on the government. Witness Oluwole Market, Oko-Baba sawmill, Oshodi, etc.

2) Refuse disposal: that's precisely why the market is being closed. These markets have executives. The government has agreements with the executive of the market. The executives supervise the cleaning of the market, ensure there's no street trading, etc, while Lawma provides trucks and personnel to cart away the refuse, Kai and Lastma are on hand to assist the executives, etc. Anytime the traders breach this agreement, the government issues a warning, has meetings with the executive and if this doesn't work, the market is shut.

Remember, this market has been shut before, the executive have promised to correct the errors, the market has been re-opened, yet, even posters here attest to the fact that it's filthy.

The funny thing is that change has to come with a price....Ladipo market to be honest is filty and disgusting...if the traders there( pls note it is not only igbos that trade there) refused to keep the place clean and serene then what the government did is absolutely correct..

We keep complaining about so many things we dont have the slightest understanding of...The lagos state govt has laid emphasies on making lagos a mega city and this is one of the steps in making it a reality...

If you keep an environment clean and observe decency then the govt can never say they want it shut down...

What pisses me off is that majority of all the people saying the lagos state govt is fighting igbos can never try what they are doing in ladipo in advanced countries like U.S or U.K without being fined or even arrested...

Let Mr. Fashola continue his good work and hope other greedy governors are watching him making a change...

Yeah, I concur, let him continue with his good job. There is however ripple effect on the brilliant job he has been doing. With okada off the roads, people are trekking to their offices, more vehicular traffic is the order of the day, crime will only get worse. With ladipo closed, spare parts will become more expensive and this will be passed on to the passenger, yes, let him continue the good work without providing alternatives to the bikes or the market. Is closure the only reasonable thing? How about bring in those corporate cleaners and then charge the traders to pay them on an ongoing basis. This way, the state could even make margins off the marketers. This is a brainless and brutish thing to do.

One thing I like this our govt for is that they can always find a way to present whatever it is they choose to do to appear right/acceptable in the eyes of the law. Whether it's got any moral bearing is a tale for another day. And if you expect Nig govt pronouncements in the media to be in tandem with the realities of what they choose to execute on ground you must be daydreaming. As usual, the market will be reopened after 'signing of agreement' (in more practical terms, after gov must have collected millions of naira bribe from the traders?).

I still won't call this a Tribal war yet after what was done to Yaba and Tejuosho markets, I just wanna get my head round what the heck is going on. For as far as I'm concerned, there are better ways of handling this even on to generating jobs and revenue to LASG.

Naptu2,

I am sure you are resident in Lagos and you are truly an informed person. I have been following your posts on Lagos state for the past few months because I am a keen supporter of Fashola's extraordinary leadership style.

One of my wards in the fruit market Ketu complained that the market was shut down a few weeks back. Definitely this is a majorly Hausa and Yoruba market. The main Ketu market was shut down a few months ago, Some just cannot think beyond tribal sentiments.

This is the same market where they killed their leaders, that the state has summoned them on several occasions due to their inability to keep the place clean or organise parking.

Carry una tribalist wahala go another place.

THUGGERY: Lagos Police Boss Summons Ladipo Market Leader

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko, has summoned leaders of Ladipo Market traders at Mushin to the police headquarters, Ikeja, Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria, over threat to life and insecurity in the market and its environs.

The leaders were summoned to appear before Manko on Friday to explain the various reports about thuggery and threat to the lives of some traders and residents.

P.M.NEWS gathered that an invitation letter was delivered at the office of the central body called Ladipo Auto Central Executive Committee, LACEC.

The invitation has to do with the total break down of law and order in the market due to thuggery.

P.M.NEWS gathered that the market has been turned into a jungle where all sorts of crimes such as thuggery and drug dealings are allegedly committed.

Armed thugs have taken over the market and customers who go to the market are robbed of their possessions, yet the leaders are not doing anything about it.

Mushin Local Government Chairman, Mr. Babatunde Adepitan, noted in the presence of protesting traders over armed thugs in the market earlier this week that he was aware that armed thugs are in the market and he was doing everything possible to clean up the place.

The invitation also followed complaints by the residents in Papa Ajao area of Mushin who claimed that there are security challenges in the area and in the market both in the day and at night.

P.M.NEWS investigation revealed that there are about 36 unions that make up LACEC, and those unions have deployed their thugs called task force that unleash terror on both customers, traders and residents.

A trader told P.M.NEWS to come to Ladipo market around 7 pm and see how the market has been taken over by miscrants.

When P.M.NEWS contacted the market president, Mr Ikechukwu Animalu, he comfirmed the police boss’ invitation and noted that there are miscreants in the market but added that market leaders are battling to get rid of them.

The market has been facing crises over leadership tussle. The tussle led to the hiring of thugs who have compromised the security of the market.

Fashola receives protesting Balogun traders, appeals for restraint

Written by    Wednesday, 20 February 2013

Lagos State governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola, on Monday appealed to the Island Fashion Dealers from Balogun Market, Lagos to exercise restraint with the government just as he promised to visit the market to determine its exact location and the state of things.

The governor spoke at the open grounds of the Lagos House, Ikeja when he received the traders, who staged a peaceful protest to the Governor’s Office to protest the continued closure of their market in the aftermath of a fire disaster in October last year.

Governor Fashola, who volunteered to visit the site of the market following claims and counter claims about the exact location of the market by the traders, also said the government owed all its citizens a duty to safeguard their lives.

He apologised to the traders for any inconveniences they might have been facing over the fire incident which ravaged their structures in October and noted that he had to adjourn the State Executive Council meeting to come and receive them.

He explained that the report he is getting indicates that since the fire incident occurred the building has not been stable and that government would be failing in its responsibilities if it allows people to carry on their business in such an unsafe environment.

Governor Fashola said that the fact that the building seemed safe to the traders does not mean it should be accepted as being safe until it is certified to be so by the relevant authorities of the State.

Speaking earlier, the spokesperson of the group, Mrs Moji Ibrahim claimed that the plaza that the traders occupied was not involved in the fire incident caused by firecrackers in Central Lagos.

She said the traders decided to stage a protest to the Alausa seat of government when it waited endlessly and did not get a quick response from officials of the state government on what step it intends to take concerning the burnt market. She said the situation has brought untold hardships to many families and dependants of the traders.

The traders who were happy about the Governor’s response and promise to personally visit the market sang in praise of his leadership qualities and dispersed peacefully.

The Governor was joined by members of the State Executive Council including the Special Adviser on Central Business District, Mrs Derin Disu, Commissioner for Special Duties, Dr Wale Ahmed and his Information and Strategy counterpart, Mr Lateef Ibirogba among others.

Lagos Govt Orders Closure of Alade Market, Shopping Arcade

By Olasunkanmi Akoni, 2 July 2004

Lagos — The Lagos State Government yesterday ordered the closure of the popular Alade Market and Shopping Arcade, along Allen Avenue Onigbongbo Local Government area of Lagos State for failure to meet up with the environmental sanitation standard of the state.

The market was shut before 7am by security operatives from the state government's office at Alausa, before the traders could resume for their usual trading activities.

It's rather unfortunate that most posters here only relate their post to each other with sentiments without proper tour or knowing the true picture of Ladipo market. The pictures above only showed their wares and the street traders.
I always pass through Ladipo almost everyday and If I were to compare it with other markets like Idi Oro, Mushin I will give them pass mark. Even the access road repairs which is government responsibility were carried out a little by the Leaders in the market.
I believe their is more to this closure rather than filthiness.
Re: Ladipo Spare-Parts Market Finally Shut-down by naptu2: 9:39pm On Feb 25, 2013
People are still going about this the wrong way.

1) This is not an issue of ethnicity because many places of business that are used by various ethnic groups have been closed, warned, etc since 1999. What ethnic group is the dominant ethnic group at Mile 12 market? What ethnic group is the dominant ethnic group at the Oko Baba saw mill? And so many others.

2) For the same reasons, Ladipo Market is not the only market that has been closed and it might not be the last, so trying to say another market is dirtier is neither here nor there. The fact is that the market has not met the standards that has been set by government (street trading, filth, method of waste disposal, obstruction of traffic, etc).

3) The government should come to an agreement with market leaders and the private sector on ways to dispose the waste: Well, the market has been closed because the traders breached such an agreement. Some are even saying that the government should collect money from the traders for the sanitation of the market! If that is implemented, these same people will scream extortion and imposition.

When this issue of market closures began in the early 2000s (Tinubu Administration) I was against it. I grudgingly came to accept it when I saw the results of the market closures (much better environment).

I am truly shocked that nobody has mentioned the one flaw in this policy. The only problem I have with the closure is the issue of individual liability and culpability. The particular individuals that are responsible for littering the streets, street trading, causing obstruction of traffic flow, etc should be arrested and prosecuted, but the market should not be closed. Those who have not committed these offences have a right to continue their business in peace, while those who have committed the offences should be prosecuted.

This is more difficult for the government to do, because it requires constant patrol. There's also the issue of people resisting arrest and even the problem of identifying people, so the government took the easy way out by shutting the market, which shouldn't be.
